1 Day 1 For this class it is necessary to have a classroom account in addition to a fake account that will be used later to practice safety. Objectives Learners will be able to Materials Computer skill: cover the basics of the computer, its hardware and its software Computer skill: learners will set up an address Make Student Copies Syllabus Follow and Fill Username and Password Rules Setup Props, Technology or Other Resources Projector Computer for every student Introduction to the Mouse PPT Lesson Plan Warm-up: Description: Teacher and student introductions. List questions you want students to answer about themselves on the board. Go over syllabus/rules with for the classroom Materials/Prep: Write 3-4 questions on the board (leave room for projector to show) for students to answer as you go around the room Vocabulary Web address/url Username Password Activity 1: Introduction to the Mouse Description: Students will learn the basics of moving and using the mouse Materials/Prep: Load Introduction to the Mouse PowerPoint Activity 2: Computer skills, Literacy Description: introduce introduction to computer vocabulary Materials/Prep: load Welcome to the Computer PowerPoint, copies of Follow and Fill and Student Dictionaries Activity 3: intro Description: review of basic vocabulary as well as tips/rules for creating passwords and usernames Materials/Prep: Username and Password Rules Activity 4: sign-up Description: learners will set up an address using Gmail Materials/Prep: Setup Kayla Norman, Minnesota Literacy Council, 2012 p. 1 Unit
2 Teacher Directions: Activity 1: Introduction to the mouse -Using to the Mouse Step 1: Introduce Mouse Open the Using the Mouse PowerPoint. Go over slides with students Step 2: Mouse Practice Learners should open Internet Explorer and type in Give them about 10 minutes to work through the Mouserobics Teacher Directions: Activity 2: Intro to the computer Follow and Fill Step 1: Introduce topic Open the Welcome to the Computer PowerPoint saved on the Computer and handout Follow and Fill exercise Go through the Power Point with the notes provided on the Notes Pages printed from the presentation Have students fill in blanks of the Follow and Fill handout as you go through the presentation. Step 2: Reviewing answers activity Have students go over answers for Follow and Fill handout in pairs. Then, pull the handout up on the computer and have students write the answers in the open spots on the board. It is necessary to correct spelling errors. Give the student the option to go back to their seat and try to find the correct spelling and come back up and edit it on their own. Teacher Directions: Activity 3: Intro -Username and Password Rules Step 1: What is ? is electronic mail which sends a digital message over the internet. 5 Computers and Literacy Syllabus Class times: Class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for 4 weeks. You have the option of coming to class at 6 for typing practice, which is strongly encouraged. Unit Overview: In this 4 week unit you will learn the skills to use in a professional setting. Rules: 1. No food or drink 2. Carry your computers carefully 3. Do not touch your computer screen 4. Respect the classroom and your classmates Recommended Materials: Minnesota Literacy Council provides the computer materials 1. Notebook 2. Pen/pencil 3. Folder Attendance: It is important to not only be present for all classes, but to show up on time. We go through a lot of information in this unit so it is important to be present to ensure you do not miss anything. If you need to miss a class, please call beforehand to let us know. 8 KEEP THIS IN A SAFE PLACE: We can keep it stored for you until the end of class Setup 1. Click on Create and Account on the top right corner of the page 2. Fill in the spots for first and last name 3. Username should be your last name followed by the first two letters of your first name Example: obamaba 4. Click the Tab button (this moves your cursor down to the next fill in line) 5. The username you typed in probably already exist, so you might see some suggestions for what you could add to make it your own 6. 9 9. Under the heading Default Homepage click on the checkmark. This will uncheck the box. 10. Type in the verification to prove you are not a robot, it might be difficult, but take your time 11. Click on the box next to I agree, a check mark should show up 12. Click on the box next to Google may, this should uncheck the box 13. Click next step 14. The next window with have some information, click on the blue box that says Next step 15. On the next window, click continue to Gmail 16. You should now be in your account. 17.
