Western Canada (BC/Alberta) BlueSky Extension Pilot Project
History of Smoke Forecasting in Canada emissions research conducted provincial efforts (e.g. CALPUFF in Northern Ontario) federal (Environment Canada) initiatives (automated trajectories, emergency L-S model, testing with CHRONOS air quality model)
Beginnings Increased demand for Smoke Forecasts (public health and safety, tourism, medical community, fire management, transportation sector) Smoke Forecasting Workshop (Edmonton, Alberta, Feb 07) user needs for smoke forecasts tools available/needed for smoke forecasting possible partners plan for an overall system Two major questions: develop a made-in-canada system? collaborate with BlueSky and extend the boundary of Bluesky system?
Bluesky Western Canada Extension Pilot Pilot project to extend current Bluesky domain into BC/Alberta Builds on current Bluesky system - Canadian components could be plugged in (geophysical, emissions, meteorology) Even if a made in Canada system is devised, elements of the Bluesky pilot can be used for components of this system Immediate focus will be on wildfires Name? BlueSkyEh? or Brewsky
Partners BC Ministry of Environment (S. Sakiyama) BC Ministry of Forests (E. Meyer) U of BC: Health (M. Brauer, S. Henderson) Atmospheric Science (R. Stull) Env Canada Pacific Region (P. Schwarzhoff) Env. Canada Prairie Region (A. Pankratz, B. Wiens) Alberta Environment (L. Cheng) Alberta Sustainable Resource Management (C. Tymstra) Bluesky: USFS AirFire (S. Larkin)
Conceptual Approach: Brew-sky Geophysical Data BC/Alberta Meteorological Fields BC/Alberta (produced in Canada) Seattle AirFire Bluesky System Wildfire Location, Fuel Consumption BC/Alberta (produced in Canada) Seattle AirFire RAINS Display for BC/Alberta
Meteorological Fields Initial idea: Canadian Mesoscale Model: GEM- LAM Hourly meteorology at 2.5 km grid resolution produced twice daily for domain covering most of B.C. and a portion of Alberta New Plan: University of British Columbia (UBC) 4 km grid resolution MM5 for all of British Columbia and Alberta Testing of this large domain set-up was successful Huge domain (2x larger than existing domain) challenge: data transfer times to Seattle AirFire group

Geophysical Information and RAINS Extension UBC support to Sonoma Tech: domain extended to cover BC/Alberta Geophysical information (GIS layers) provided to Sonoma Tech Extended domain can be viewed at:

Emissions currently BC wildfires obtained from the BC Ministry of Forests website no consumption info, sometimes not current, information on area burned is difficult to obtain provide fuel consumption info for every wildfire Current Efforts (location, consumption, area burned) UBC method using MODIS FireM3 (Canadian Forest Service system: satellite based) combined with BC Forest Ministry hourly fuel consumption estimates for all of B.C. (2 km grid) Testing of FireM3 system currently underway with 2003 fire season observations
More UBC Less Data Bottleneck huge volume of MM5 output: data transfer from UBC to AirFire in Seattle hours serious bottleneck Solution: Machine from USFS AirFire with Bluesky loaded set up at UBC run Bluesky at UBC where MM5 output fed directly (avoids bottleneck) Testing to begin early Dec Goal: stable system by 2008 fire season.
Brew-Sky Pilot: Conceptual Approach UBC generated MM5 Meteorological Fields BC/Alberta UBC Bluesky (BC/Alberta) BC generated Wildfire Location, Fuel Consumption BC/Alberta Seattle Airfire Bluesky Seattle AirFire RAINS for BC/Alberta
The Future funding for Pilot into next fire season, but long term solution requires multi-agency support Canadian home needed but key to support is an operational system (pilot up and running) Vision: centers across Canada tied to Bluesky centres across US
