1 Assemblies and Rendering EF 101 Module 3.3 Today s Lab Wraps up this semester s coverage of Mechanical Desktop! Begin with the start file from the web site and apply various rendering and assembly techniques to it. End with a Microsoft Word document that includes a rendered image and a exploded view drawing. Includes a few topics at the end which won t be on the test, but are useful to be aware of. 1 2 Assembly Mass Properties Measuring Distances What is the volume of our start file? What is it s surface area? What is it s weight? Where is its center of gravity? Bar: FOAMCORE (density.58 g/cc) Lids: STAINLESS_STEEL Base:ALUMINUM Bolt: HSLA_STEEL Assembly Analysis Mass Properties Must select each part of the assembly Use ALL at command line Each part should have a material associated with it This is different than the Render Material Density of the specified material is used for mass and centroid calculations Not required if you just need the assembly volume Can define additional materials (foamcore!) Specify coordinate system: use UCS (which is already at low left of base) Results Tab, Calculate Button Answers: 7.48in 3, 52.22in 2, 0.92lb, (1.50,1.00,.91)in 3 What is the clearance of the lids in the given configuration? Be sure to be in a view where you can select the desired points Enable OSNAP via the status bar Right click on OSNAP in the status bar to check snap settings DIST command (or Assist Inquiry Distance) Select the desired points Distance and distance components wrt current coordinate system are shown in the command window Answer: 0.59in Some commands which might help in measuring View Display UCS Icon Toggles display of current coordinate system, also allows the coordinate system to be displayed at it s (0,0,0) location rather that lower left. Assist Move UCS Used to move the current UCS (Sketch plane) origin to another location on the same plane. 4 1
2 Rendering For the best quality shaded pictures of solid objects, use the View Render Render menu. This option will allow you to assign materials to your parts and to create high quality raster images that can be included in documents and WWW pages Materials are rendering textures - different from Assembly Mass Properties materials Most useful for assemblies where each part has a different material System 3D Display Options Assist Options, System, Properties Enable Material and Texture Display Example of a rendered assembly using applied materials and light sources 5 6 Rendering Details - Load Materials View Render Materials Library Preview material types Import desired materials into this assembly file Rendering Details - Apply Materials View Render Materials Highlight desired material on left Attach Select part(s) to attach material to, RETURN to finish 7 8 2
3 Using an Image as a New Material View Render Materials, New Set the File Name to the desired image Material definition is stored with the file, but the the image file is referenced. Adjust Bitmap button controls how the image is mapped to the object. Use Fit to Object and Crop for best display Transparency is also very useful Help for more information Modifying an Existing Material Must already be imported into the assembly. Select Modify Color Roughness Transparency Bitmap Etc Only modifies this file s copy of the material 9 10 Perspective Projection A more realistic view Enable Rotate (Orbit) mode Right Click in window background Projection Perspective More Adjust Distance and Zoom as desired 11 Rendering Details - Render to Screen Orient the object as desired Rotate, zoom, pan, Parallel or Perspective Projection View Render Render Set Rendering Type = Photo Real Check Smooth Shade Check Apply Materials Set Destination = Viewport Select More Options Set Anti-Aliasing = High (smoothes stairstepped edges) Select Background Select Solid option Uncheck AutoCAD Background Select Custom Color - white Render 12 3
4 Rendering Details - Render to File Render to the screen until the desired image is obtained To write to a file use the additional step: Set Destination = File Select More Options (under Destination) Set File Type to TIFF 640x480 (VGA) Set Colors = 24 bits Render Specify file name Once you have the desired file, you can include it in your MS Word document by using Insert Picture From File menu Arbitrary Positioning (MS Word) Right click image, select Format Picture Set Layout to Behind Text or In Front of Text to allow positioning anywhere on the page 13 Scenes: Explodes, Tweaks, Trails Explode First mate plane/plane constraint gets its offset increased by the explosion factor Overall explosion factor right click on scene name, select edit Individual part s explosion factor right click on part name, select Explosion Factor, uncheck Use Scene Explosion Factor Tweak Used to explode parts in arbitrary directions Right click on item name in browser, choose New Tweak Simple case grab an end of a manipulator axis and drag the part Manipulator axis orientation can be changed Right click on Tweak in browser window to edit/delete Trail Used to visually show explodes and tweaks Right click on part name to create/edit/delete Layer command to set AM_TR layer color and linetype 14 Assembly Annotations Parts List Automatic list and quantities of all assembly parts Annotate Parts List Parts List Remove unneeded columns Materials come from Assembly Analysis Balloons Annotate Parts List Balloons, autoall, type ALL at command line Drag leader and ballon grips to desired locations Double-click a ballon to access Properties (lower left of dialog box) to set balloon and text sizes Including Drawings in MS Word Many ways, this is the easiest: Get the desired display on the screen Use ALT-Print Scrn to copy the current window to the clipboard. (Print Scrn copies the entire display) Switch to Word Edit Paste Right click on the image, Format Picture, Layout, set to Behind or In Front of Text. This allows absolute placement of the image on the page. Enable picture toolbar via View Toolbars Picture toolbar Use crop tool to drag in edges of the image to crop unwanted portions
5 Other Feature Types We haven t covered all of MD s capabilities Many other feature types Learn by experimenting Examples: Sweeps, Loft, Bend, Helix SubAssemblies For more complex parts, MD has the concept of sub-assemblies In this example, each leg of the table is identical and made up of 4 sides glued together. In MD you would make this a subassembly and then assemble the four leg sub-assemblies and the top together to make a final assembly
