A list of consumables, such as adhesives and lubricants, appears on page 6. To order spare parts or to obtain further information, application should be made to Vinten Broadcast Limited or your local distributor. Part contains repair procedures. The information in this manual previously formed part of Tripods and Associated Equipment - Spares and Repairs (339-9). 70 Vision ENG Tripods - Replacement of Top Clamp Assemblies Introduction 1 A kit ( SP) is available to replace broken top clamp assemblies on ALL Vision ENG tripods The kit contains two threaded inserts. Ensure correct insert is used. The threaded insert for Torque- Safe tripods has a two-start thread and a smooth barrel (1). The threaded insert for toggle-clamp tripods has a single-start thread and a grooved barrel. Consumables 3 The following adhesive will be required: Loctite 1 Dismantling 4 Turn the clamp (4) counter-clockwise to the OFF position. 5 Remove self-tapping screw (). Using a pair of long-nosed pliers (or similar), unscrew and remove threaded insert (1). Remove clamp assembly (3). (1) () (4) (3) 70
71 Cleaning NOTE: Use only water or detergent-based cleaners. DO NOT use solvent- or oil-based cleaners, abrasives or wire brushes to remove accumulations of dirt as these damage the protective surfaces. 6 Using water or a detergent-based cleaner and a semi-stiff brush, thoroughly clean the interior of the clamp housing, paying particular attention to the threaded portions, recesses, point of entry of leg and the area around the clamp assembly. 7 Using a high-pressure air gun, thoroughly dry the interior of the clamp housing. Assembly 8 Turn the knob (4) fully clockwise and ensure that there is clearance between the back face of the knob and the front face of the clamp housing. If the faces are touching, gently turn the knob counter-clockwise until it is stopped by the Torque-Safe mechanism. Turn it further counter-clockwise until one click is heard from the Torque-Safe mechanism. Turn the knob fully clockwise and recheck the clearance. Repeat this procedure until clearance is visible between the back face of the knob and the front face of the clamp housing when the knob is turned fully clockwise. 9 Turn the knob fully clockwise, then gently turn the knob counter-clockwise until it is stopped by the Torque-Safe mechanism. DO NOT TURN THE NOB UNTIL THE MECHANISM CLICS. 10 Install the clamp assembly (3) over the shaft. Install the threaded insert (1) and tighten with a pair of long-nosed pliers (or similar) until the end of the shaft is one thread below the top face of the threaded insert. Secure the threaded insert with self-tapping screw (). 71
72 Vision Torque-Safe Tripods - Repair and Overhaul of Bottom Clamp Mechanisms Introduction WARNING!: Read these instructions carefully and familiarise yourself with the procedure before commencing the repair 1 These instructions are applicable to ALL Vision two-stage Torque-Safe tripods. Due to design changes, it is necessary to replace ALL the components of the Torque-Safe clamp mechanism when carrying out this repair. Consumables 3 The following lubricants and adhesives will be required: Grease GP50 Molybdenum Disulphide Grease, Rocol white bearing Loctite 1 Dismantling 4 Prise out and discard the knob label (1). Using a special screwdriver (Vinten Tool TL or similar), remove and discard the tapered screw (). Pull off and discard the knob (3). 5 Remove and discard the shim (4), spring washers (5), front cam plate (6) and middle serrated plate (7). Gentle tapping may be required to remove the middle serrated plate. 6 Using a 1/in. AF long-reach socket on the hexagon, unscrew and remove the shaft (8) and associated components (9)(10)(11)(1). It is not necessary to dismantle the shaft. 7 Prise out and discard the plunger cover (13). 8 From inside the clamp, retrieve and discard the plunger (16) and spring (15). The shim washer and clamp assembly cannot be removed. 9 If fitted, DO NOT remove the two plugs (14). 7

Assembly 1 If not fitted, install two plugs (14). 13 Slide the back serrated plate (9) over the shaft (8), followed by the spring (10) and spring retaining washer (11). Secure components to the shaft with E clip (1). Lubricate the external thread of the shaft with GP50 grease. Using a felt-tip pen, mark the serrated face immediately above the plunger cut-out. 73
74 14 Lubricate the plunger (16) and spring (15) with white bearing grease. Fit the spring into the plunger and install both in the clamp housing, ensuring that the chamfer on the plunger faces towards the tripod foot. 15 From inside the clamp housing, depress the plunger (16) fully. Using a scriber or similar tool inserted through the hole in the front of the clamp housing, hold the plunger in the depressed position. 16 Centralize the clamp assembly and start the thread of the shaft (8) in the clamp housing. Ensure that the plunger cut-out (indicated by pen mark) in the back serrated plate (9) engages with the plunger. 17 Using a 1/in. AF long-reach socket, push down on the back serrated plate (9) and screw the assembled shaft into the clamp housing, ensuring that the shaft seats correctly. Tighten the shaft fully, then back off one half-turn. WARNING!: Ensure no grease is present on the serrated faces of clamp components. 18 Install the middle serrated plate (7) and front cam plate (6). 19 Position the tapered screw () in the knob (3). Observing the orientation shown in the illustration, install one shim washer (4) and eight spring washers (5) on the tapered screw. 0 Apply Loctite 1 to the thread of the tapered screw () and install knob and washers on the shaft (8). Tighten the screw using the special screwdriver (Vinten Tool TL or similar), while gently moving the knob from side to side to ensure it seats correctly. Adjustment 1 Tighten the clamp fully until the Torque-Safe mechanism operates. Using a torque wrench with a suitable adaptor to fit the knob, measure the torque required to operate the Torque-Safe mechanism. This should be between 13 and 17 lbf in. 3 If the torque is too high, remove the knob, remove a shim washer (4), refit the knob and retest. If too low, add a shim washer (4). NOTE: Shim washers may be added at either end of the stack of spring washers (5), but AT LEAST ONE must be fitted immediately under the knob. 4 Install knob label (1). 5 Install the plunger cover (13). 74
75 Vision Torque-Safe Tripods - Replacing Broken Upper Clamp Mouldings Introduction 1 These instructions are applicable to ALL Vision Torque-Safe single- and two-stage tripods. Consumables The following adhesive will be required: Repair Loctite 1 3 Examine the broken clamp moulding. If the centre of the moulding has been drawn into the housing, the clamp will require resetting, as detailed in Para 4. Otherwise, proceed to Para 5. Resetting the Torque-Safe clamp 4 Reset the Torque-Safe clamp as follows: 4.1 Prise out and discard the knob label (6). 4. Using special screwdriver (Vinten Tool TL or similar), remove the tapered screw (7). 4.3 Pull off the knob (8). 4.4 Note number of shims (9). Remove and retain the shims. 4.5 Note orientation of spring washers (5). Remove and retain the springs. 4.6 Remove and retain the front cam plate (4) and middle serrated plate (3). 4.7 Using a 1/in. AF long-reach socket on the hexagon of the clamp shaft (), push down on the back serrated plate (1) and screw the shaft fully in. 4.8 Unscrew the shaft () half-a-turn. 4.9 Install the middle serrated plate (3) and the front cam plate (4) on the shaft () Assemble the spring washers (5) as noted during removal and install on the shaft () Install shim(s) (9) on the shaft (). 4.1 Carefully position the knob on the shaft () Using Loctite 1, install tapered screw (7). Hold the knob while tightening the screw Install the knob label (6). 75

Remove and retain the self-tapping screw (1). 5.3 Unscrew and remove the two-start threaded insert (11) from the clamp shaft (). Retain the threaded insert. Installing the replacement clamp 6 Install the replacement clamp moulding as follows: 6.1 Ensure the clamp is correctly reset. 6. Using a straight edge across the clamp housing as shown, note dimension A. It should be approximately 0.5 mm OR.5 mm. 6.3 Install a new clamp moulding (10). 76
77 6.4 Screw the two-start threaded insert (11) onto the clamp shaft (). If dimension A was approximately 0.5 mm, set the outside face of the insert flush with the end of the clamp shaft. If dimension A was approximately.5 mm, set the outside face of the insert mm proud of the end of the clamp shaft. Align the nearest notch in the threaded insert with the screw hole and secure with the screw (1). Adjusting the clamp 7 Check and adjust the clamp as follows: 7.1 Tighten the clamp. 7. If the torque-safe mechanism operates, but fails to clamp the leg, proceed as follows: 7..1 Fully release the clamp. 7.. Remove the self-tapping screw (1) SCREW IN the threaded insert (11) by one notch and secure with the screw (1) Tighten the clamp. Repeat Para 7. as required. 7.3 If the torque-safe mechanism does not operate, but the clamp is tight, proceed as follows: Fully release the clamp Remove the self-tapping screw (1) SCREW OUT the threaded insert (11) by one notch and secure with the screw (1) Tighten the clamp. Repeat Para 7.3 as required. 77
78 Vision Two-Stage Tripods - Installing Mid-Level Spreaders Introduction 1 Mid level spreaders are available for fitting to ENG and EFP two-stage tripods. Each spreader kit comprises a spreader, three interface brackets, three foot assemblies and fixing hardware. The interface brackets are secured to the bottom clamp moulding. Installing a mid-level spreader NOTE: Before installing the spreader, it is necessary to identify the type of tripod, as follows: Early versions of the tripods have no mounting holes in lower mouldings. Later versions have holes closed by plugs. Current tripods have knock-out holes, identified by moulded rings. 3 On early tripods, drill two 9.5mm (3/8in.) hole in each lower moulding as follows: NOTE: A drill jig (ENG tripods - Part , EFP tripods - Part ) is available from Vinten Broadcast Ltd or your local distributor. 3.1 Fully retract the tripod legs. 3. Install drill jig (1) on lower moulding (3) and drill two holes using a 9.5 mm (3/8 in.) diameter drill (). 3.3 Remove drill jig. 4 On later tripods with plugs, remove the plugs by prising out carefully using a small thin-bladed screwdriver or similar tool. 5 On current tripods with knock-out holes, drive in the knock-outs using a suitable tool. If possible, remove blanks from inside the mouldings to prevent subsequent rattle. 6 After opening the holes, install the interface brackets as follows: 6.1 Push a blind captive nut (4) into each hole in the lower mouldings (3). 6. Position brackets (5) on lower mouldings, noting orientation, and secure each with two screws (6). 6.3 Install spreader (8) on tripod by pushing the universal joints on each leg into brackets until the catches hold. Ensure spreader is oriented so that when the tripod is folded, the spreader folds upwards. 6.4 To remove spreader, press quick-release levers (7) outwards and free each leg in turn. 78

80 Vision Two-Stage Tripods - Installing Carrying Straps Introduction 1 Carrying straps are available for fitting to ENG and EFP tripods. Consumables The following lubricants and adhesives will be required: Grease, Rocol white bearing Loctite 1 Installing a carrying strap 3 On early tripods, remove the plug from the lower moulding (4) by prising out carefully using a small thinbladed screwdriver or similar tool. 4 On current tripods with a knock-out hole, drive in the knock-out using a suitable tool. If possible, remove the blank from inside the moulding to prevent subsequent rattle. 5 After opening the hole, install the strap as follows: 5.1 Push a blind captive nut (5) into the hole in the lower mouldings (4). 5. Install a washer (6) on a strap anchor (7) and screw into the captive nut (5). NOTE: On ENG tripods, both strap anchors are the same length. On EFP tripods, the shorter strap anchor should be fitted in the lower moulding and the longer at the leg hinge. 5.3 At the leg hinge, remove screw (1) and replace with a strap anchor (), using Loctite 1 on the thread and white Rocol grease under the countersink. 5.4 Clip the strap (3) to the strap anchors and adjust to length. 80
