59 Introduction Heavy-Duty Tripods - Repair of Clamp Assemblies WARNING!: Read these instructions carefully and familiarise yourself with the procedure before commencing the repair. 2 These instructions are applicable to ALL heavy-duty single- and two-stage tripods Consumables 3 The following consumables will be required: Loctite 221 Easyrun 50 grease Dismantling 4 Turn the knob (3) counterclockwise to release the clamp. 5 Remove screw (17). Using a suitable peg spanner, unscrew and remove threaded insert (18). Remove clamp plate (19). 6 Prise out the knob label (1). Using a special screwdriver (Vinten Tool TL or similar), remove the tapered screw (2). Pull off the knob (3). 7 Remove the shim (4), spring washers (5), front cam plate (6), middle serrated plate (7) and polythene washer (8). Gentle tapping may be required to remove the middle serrated plate. NOTE: Shaft (9) has a two-start left-hand thread. 8 Unscrew and remove the shaft (9) and associated components (10)(11)(12)(13). 9 If required, remove E clip (13) and pull spring retainer washer (12), spring (11) and back serrated plate (10) off the shaft (9). 10 From inside the clamp housing assembly (20), retrieve the plunger (15) and spring (16). The threaded insert (14) is secured with Loctite 638 and should not be removed. 59

DO NOT use solvent- or oil-based cleaners, abrasives or wire brushes to remove accumulations of dirt as these damage the protective surfaces. 11 Using water or a detergent-based cleaner and a semi-stiff brush, thoroughly clean the interior of the clamp housing assembly (20), paying particular attention to the threaded portions, recesses, points of entry of legs and the area around the clamp. 12 Using a high-pressure air gun, thoroughly dry the interior of the clamp housing. Assembly 13 If dismantled, slide the back serrated plate (10) over the shaft (9), followed by the spring (11) and spring retaining washer (12). Secure components to the shaft with E clip (13). Lubricate sparingly the external threads of the shaft with Easyrun 50 grease. See page 6 for letter key to adhesives and lubricants 60

61 14 Lubricate the spring (16) and rear face of the plunger (15) with Easyrun 50 grease. Fit the spring into the plunger and install both in the clamp housing, ensuring that the chamfer on the plunger is as shown above. NOTE: Shaft (9) has a two-start left-hand thread. 15 Using a suitable thin-bladed tool, hold the plunger in against its spring. Start the thread of the shaft (9) in the clamp housing threaded insert (14). Ensure that the plunger cut-out in the back serrated plate (10) engages with the plunger. 16 Using a 1/2in. AF long-reach socket, push down on the back serrated plate (10) and screw the assembled shaft into the clamp housing, ensuring that the shaft seats correctly. Tighten the shaft fully, then back off half a turn. WARNING!: Ensure no grease is present on the serrated faces of clamp components. 17 Install the polythene washer (8), the middle serrated plate (7) and the front cam plate (6). 18 Position the tapered screw (2) in the knob (3). Observing the orientation shown in the illustration, install one shim washer (4) and eight spring washers (5) on the tapered screw. 19 Apply Loctite 221 to the thread of the tapered screw (2) and install knob and washers on the shaft(9). Tighten the screw using Vinten Tool TL or similar, while gently moving the knob from side to side to ensure it seats correctly. Fit the knob label (1). 20 Turn the knob fully counterclockwise and ensure that there is clearance between the back face of the knob and the front face of the clamp housing. If the faces are touching, gently turn the knob clockwise until it is stopped by the Torque-Safe mechanism. Turn it further clockwise until one click is heard from the Torque- Safe mechanism. Turn the knob fully counterclockwise and recheck the clearance. Repeat this procedure until clearance is visible between the back face of the knob and the front face of the clamp housing when the knob is turned fully counterclockwise. 21 Turn the knob fully counterclockwise, then gently turn the knob clockwise until it is stopped by the Torque-Safe mechanism. DO NOT TURN THE KNOB UNTIL THE MECHANISM CLICKS. 22 Apply Easyrun 50 grease to underside of head on threaded insert (18) and to mating faces of clamp plate (19) as shown. 23 Install the clamp plate (19) over the shaft (9). Screw in the threaded insert (18) until the end of the shaft (9) is two threads below the top face of the threaded insert. Secure the threaded insert with screw (17). 24 Apply and release the Torque-Safe mechanism several times to bed-in the clamp. 61

62 Adjusting the tracking of heavy-duty studio skid (3497-3C) Introduction 1 With the track locks engaged and a payload fitted, the skid should track in a straight line over a distance of 3.6 m (12 feet) with deviation not exceeding 5 cm (2 in.). If this cannot be achieved, the wheels should be re-aligned. When re-aligning the wheels, start by adjusting the wheel with the red locking knob on the fixed leg. 64 Wheel alignment 3 To re-align the skid wheels: 3.1 Remove the tripod or pedestal from the skid. 3.2 Slacken screw (4). 3.3 Remove the bolt (2) and washer (3) securing the castor to the fixed leg. Apply Loctite 270 to the bolt (2) and refit bolt (2) and washer (3) and tighten lightly. 3.4 Engage the track lock (1) on each castor. 3.5 Align the wheel on the fixed leg so that it runs parallel to the leg. 3.6 Using a suitable straight line on the studio floor, check that over a distance of 3.6 m (12 feet) the deviation does not exceed 5 cm (2 in.). Re-adjust the wheel until this is achieved. If it cannot be achieved, the wheels on the other two legs should be re-aligned. 3.7 Once the wheels have been correctly aligned, tighten bolts (2) and screws (4). 64
