A+ Certification also serves as the foundation for computer service professionals who are pursuing other valuable industry certifications, such as the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, and Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP). While preparing for the A+ Certification exam, students will gain comprehensive knowledge in PC hardware and Windows operating systems, networking, printers, and customer service. Hands-on labs using the latest computer components and operating systems will also provide an opportunity for students to enhance their skills in assembling, disassembling, servicing, troubleshooting, and upgrading advanced computer and networking systems. Prerequisites: None. Required Materials: Note: You may purchase your course materials from any source including the college book store or direct from the publisher (TestOut). This course uses Canvas as its courseware management system and TestOut LabSim PC Pro for course content. You MUST purchase the LabSim PC Pro product in order to participate in this course. Required Software Product: LabSim PC Pro (version 5.1.0) for the A & 902 exam from TestOut corporation. Access to a computer with reliable Internet access is required. You must complete course material including labs and other graded material when assigned. No late work is accepted, there is no extra credit, and computer/operating system issues or loss of Internet connectivity is not acceptable as an excuse for missing assigned due dates. Please visit the TestOut Help Desk at: Class Format: This class is taught in the classroom with a combination of lecture, demonstration, question and answer, student discussion, independent study, and hands-on lab. You are expected to spend at least 3 hours and 40 minutes each week outside of class studying course material. You are expected to read and review all of the course material to be covered each week before coming to class. Participation: You are expected to attend every class and to be on time. You must also logon to the class Canvas site at least once a week. If an entire week goes by with no activity on your part either through attendance, communication or completion of a graded event you will be dropped from the class. It is therefore imperative that you let me know if for any reason your participation in the class will be interrupted. It is your responsibility to keep up with the class schedule and to complete graded events when they are available. Various graded events are available for specific time periods. Graded events must be completed during the time they are available--no exceptions! Once dropped from the class you will not be reinstated for any reason. Just logging on to the course software product LabSim PC Pro is not sufficient to satisfy this logon requirement. Certification Exam Information: Upon completion of this class students desiring to take the CompTIA A+ Certification exams should be prepared to successfully pass the current A+ exams. Certification exams must be scheduled, paid for, and taken at an official CompTIA Certification Exam Center. Further information about where to take the certification exam will be provided. In addition to this class I suggest you review additional A+ Certification exam study material to include web-based materials, study guides, sample practice question guides, additional reference material, and the CompTIA web site prior to taking the exams. Orientation Quiz: In order for me to determine that you are correctly enrolled in this class, are active in Canvas, and are familiar with class policies and procedures you are required to take an Orientation Quiz by 11:00 pm Wednesday of the first week of class. See Canvas Announcements and the 1 st week of the class schedule below for further information. The Orientation Quiz is contained in the Week 01 link of the Modules menu item on the class Canvas site. Failure to take this quiz by the due date will result in you being dropped from the class. Graded Events: This class consists of assignments and graded events contained in Canvas and LabSim PC Pro. These events must be completed according to the class schedule attached to the end of this syllabus. The PC Pro Grading Document is also attached to the end of this document and contains a list of all required and optional/not graded assignments for this class. Carefully review this document--you cannot complete the course without referring to this document. Graded events consist of the following: LabSim Exam Practice Questions (graded). Exam practice questions are contained in each module. You may take the exam practice questions as often as you like in order to increase your score. Your highest score is recorded as your final grade for each of the exams. The exam practice questions will help you to answer the questions contained in the optional PC Pro and A+ certification practice exams at the end of the course if you choose to complete them. LabSim Labs (graded). There are a total of 95 labs covering LabSim PC Pro material. Various labs will be assigned throughout the semester. Many labs are not required. Check the PC Pro Grading Document at the end of this course syllabus to determine which labs are required and which are optional. Optional labs will not be used to compute your final class score. Lab Notebook (graded). Lab assignments are an important part of hands-on, experiential learning. You are required to complete approximately 30 hands-on labs in the classroom. There is a practical midterm and final exam that requires you to demonstrate hands-on proficiency. In order to organize lab material each student must maintain a Lab Notebook that is professional, well-organized, and uses tabs. There are two exams based on your Lab Notebook and the notebook is graded in two parts. Do not use plastic page protectors. Midterm Exam (graded). The Midterm Exam will be a hands-on, practical exam based on skills learned in class by completing in-class labs. Final Exam (graded). The Final Exam will be a hands-on, practical exam based on skills learned in class by completing in-class labs. Optional Items: Practice Certification Exams (optional). There are three practice certification exams contained in LabSim PC Pro. The exams are the PC Pro Certification Practice Exam (simulation exam) and two A+ Certification Practice Exams (multiple choice and simulation). These exams are optional, not required for the course, and if you decide to take the practice exams the scores you receive will not be included in your final course score. You may take these exams one time. Differentiate between computer hardware components (motherboard, CPU, memory, power supply, attachment cards, peripheral devices), standards and models (form factors, Microsoft Windows conventions, components), and industry practices (assembly, preventive maintenance, customer support, etc.) that are used by the computer technician community and describe each of their characteristics and functions. 2. Describe the computer system hardware and software components necessary to complete a working computer system (including basic components, peripheral devices, connecting cables, operating system, applications software, etc.); identify each of their characteristics and functions, and utilize compatible components to build and troubleshoot a functioning computer system. 3. Based on techniques learned in class, demonstrate the ability to research, compare, purchase and install computer and hardware and software components to complete an optimal computer system. 4. Utilize skills learned in class to design, build, operate and troubleshoot a limited wired and wireless computer network. 5 Identify prevailing security risks to computer systems (both hardware and software) and explain the precautions used to ensure adequate computer security that keeps data safe from viruses, loss or damage. 6. Using computer component selection and optimization, component integration, test and troubleshooting procedures and techniques learned in class, develop a computer hardware and operating systems software solution to a real-world business computer resource selection, implementation and maintenance problem. Class Policies: You must logon to the class Canvas site at least once a week. You are expected to be courteous to each other and to the instructor. You will be asked to leave the class for display of behavior the instructor deems as disruptive to the learning environment. You are expected to work actively with your peers, sharing, listening and explaining, questioning and answering. You are responsible for being prepared for participation in class activities and in group work, and for assisting your peers in understanding the materials provided when working in a group environment. You should use it throughout the semester to gauge your progress in the class and to ensure you are covering all of the material. Students are required to complete all assignments during the weeks indicated in the schedule. Failure to complete all assignments when they are available will result in a zero grade. Note: keeping track of your score (total points) may be difficult in the LabSim product. The class schedule (next page) contains a column where you can keep track of your scores as graded events (labs and exam questions) are assigned.
