Therefore, cleaning media debris from the printhead is very important. You should clean the printhead after every roll, or m (6,000 in), of media have been printed. Clean more often if necessary. Caution Do not use sharp objects such as knives or screwdrivers to scrape the printhead clean. Cleaning with sharp objects will damage the printhead. 6 Understanding the Printer Front Panel n the front panel of your printer, you will find one button and three light emitting diodes (LEDs). 7 Setting the MSN for ntermec Media and Ribbon For direct thermal media, use the three-digit media sensitivity number (MSN) located on the roll of media to set the sensitivity number. You can also use the values from the tables in the next section. For thermal transfer media, you need to look in two places to determine the sensitivity number. The sensitivity number on each roll of thermal transfer media or ribbon has an asterisk (*) in place of one of the digits. n thermal transfer media, the rating contains the first and second digits, with an asterisk in place of the third digit. The number on the ribbon has the first and third digits, with an asterisk in place of the second digit. To optimize the sensitivity number for thermal transfer media, you combine the digits as in this example. Example: ptimizing the Media Sensitivity Number Sensitivity Media or Ribbon Number Description Thermal transfer media 6* The asterisk reserves the third digit to identify the ribbon s sensitivity number. The first column of the Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer Media Sensitivity Settings tables list the approximate sensitivity settings. To achieve acceptable print quality, enter the threedigit MSN (for example, 800). f you are unsure how to set the MSN, start with the highest settings, which provides the lowest energy (800 for thermal transfer and 00 for direct thermal), and work your way down until you achieve the best print quality. You can also use PrintSet s Print Quality Wizard to help achieve print quality. The yellow LED then stays on until you load media.

8 Loading a Roll of Media This procedure explains how to load a roll of direct thermal or thermal transfer media. Note that media is sold separately. For help, contact your local ntermec representative. Troubleshooting the Printer f your labels are not printing properly, check the following table to locate the symptom and correct the problem. Turn the supply roll retainer counterclockwise to release it. Slide it to the outer end of the supply roll post. Note: f you are using a narrow roll of media (less than. cm or in), insert the media support between the roll of media and the supply roll retainer before securing it in place. 0G.0 Turn the supply roll retainer counterclockwise and slide it up to the edge of the roll of media. 9 Communicating With the Printer 8 You are now ready to print labels by downloading data from the host to your printer. Downloading is the universal term used to describe the transfer of information from the host to any connected peripheral device, such as your printer. When you transfer data from your printer to the host, you are performing a process called uploading. You can use several methods to download information in your data collection system. The next sections describe different ways to communicate with the printer. Using the PrintSet Software Use PrintSet to quickly and easily configure the printer. You can upload the current configuration settings, modify them, and then download them to your printer. ther features of PrintSet include the ability to: download graphics and fonts (including TrueType). print test labels. 0G.0 Unscrew the edge guide on the lower media guide. 0G.0 Slide the edge guide to the outer edge of the lower media guide and screw it in place. You can configure the parameters that your software does not set by using the PL command set or the printer s DP switches. Use your third-party software to create label formats and convert graphics into a user-defined character (UDC) format that your printer can interpret. Refer to your third-party documentation, for more information. 0G.0 Unroll several inches of media and route it through the printer mechanism. 0G.0 Release the lower media guide. Unscrew the edge guide and slide it in to the edge of the media. Screw the edge guide in place. Using the ntermec Printer Language (PL) Command Set You can also create labels by downloading formats (designs) and data you create with the printer command set. 10 Loading Thermal Transfer Ribbon DP Switch Settings f you plan to print in thermal transfer mode, you must install a thermal transfer ribbon on the ribbon supply hub after you install the thermal transfer media. Note that ribbon is sold separately. Note: f you are using plastic ribbon cores, you need to install the core locking brackets for the plastic ribbon cores before you load thermal transfer ribbon. Slide the roll of thermal transfer ribbon onto the ribbon supply hub with the ribbon roller unwinding clockwise. ntermec 0G.06 Detach the leader from the thermal transfer ribbon roll and unwind approximately 0 cm (8 in) of ribbon. 6 0G.0 0G.08 Route the ribbon leader through the printer mechanism ttach the ribbon leader to the empty ribbon core using the adhesive strip on the leader edge. 0 9

11 Configuring the Serial Port for Communications The serial port settings of your printer should match those of your PC or network controlling device. The default settings of the printer are: Parameter Setting 8 aud rate 9600 Parity Even Word length selection -bit word Protocol XN/XFF no status response Device address Media type Direct thermal 0G.00 0G.0 Determine which parameters you need to change and which DP switches you need to set. Use the DP switch table on the following page. Use a small straight-slot screwdriver to set the appropriate DP switches on or off. The following table provides the maximum baud rates for the printers. Close the media cover. Enable thermal transfer printing by setting DP switch 8 on the bottom bank of switches to the on ( ) position. Turn the printer power off and then on to activate the new setting G-09 For example, if you want to change the media type to thermal transfer, set DP switch 8 on the bottom bank of switches to the on ( ) position. Note: When replacing the thermal transfer ribbon roll in the future, use the empty thermal transfer ribbon core as the new rewinder core. 8

12 Testing Printer peration Print a hardware configuration test label to make sure your printer is operating correctly. Note: n example using DS to verify printer communications follows this procedure. f this procedure does not work, check to make sure that the DP switches are set to the default configuration and that the printer cable is securely plugged into the correct port of your system. To use DS to verify printer communications. n a PC with Windows 9 or earlier, at the DS prompt, type the following command and press Enter to configure the serial port: MDE CM 96,E,,,N. Note: The example label printed above is from the 00 printer. The values on your hardware configuration test label may be different. Note: f you receive a write fault error, your cabling may be incorrect. 13 Verifying Printer Communications With Your System nce you have the printer connected to your system, you need to verify that the printer communicates with your system. The easiest way to test communications is to set the printer to Data Line Print mode and send down a character string from your system. Connecting the Printer to Your System You can connect your printer to a PC, a local area network, an S/00 (or other midrange system), or a mainframe. Use this section to connect the printer to your system. f you have just printed a hardware configuration test label, start with Step. Connecting the Printer to a PC You can connect your printer to either a serial port or a parallel port (if you have the parallel option installed) on your PC. You must provide the correct cables to connect the printer. Contact your ntermec representative for ordering assistance if you do not have the appropriate cables. Use the following table to determine the correct ntermec cable for your application. Cable schematics for the PC serial cables appear on the following pages.
