The HMC is designed to deliver: Logical partitioning (LPAR) control Resource control for Capacity on Demand (CoD) offerings: Capacity Upgrade on Demand, On/Off CoD, Trial CoD, Reserve CoD, and Utility CoD Boot, start, and stop actions for the system or individual partitions HMC install, backup, and restore via network interface Serviceability tools for determining problems and providing service support through the Internet (SSL supported for call-home via HTTPS) or via modem For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: YE001 Overview The IBM 7310-C06 joins other HMC models to provide System p5 and System i5 server support. Along with the other HMC models, it provides a dedicated workstation that allows you to configure and manage partitions and Capacity on Demand on POWER5 and POWER5+ processor-based servers. One HMC is designed to manage multiple servers and dual HMCs are designed to provide redundant support by managing the same system. To help ensure consistent function for all 7310 HMC models, each HMC is shipped preloaded with the Hardware Management Console for POWER5 Licensed Machine Code (#0961). The System p5 575, 590, or 595, or System i5 595 servers must be managed by an HMC. For hardware control using Cluster Systems Management (CSM), an HMC is required. All temporary CoD offerings on System p5 servers, including Trial CoD, On/Off CoD, and Reserve CoD, require an HMC. An HMC is recommended for use with all CoD offerings. When using Advanced POWER Virtualization (APV), either an HMC or Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) is required. The HMC offers serviceability tools for the systems it controls. The HMC is connected to a dedicated port on the service processor of the system via an Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connections from HMC to System p5 575, 590, or 595 or System i5 595 servers must be via private LAN with the HMC configured as a DHCP server, whereas other IBM United States Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1

A logical connection between the HMC and each active partition on the server via a network is recommended. It is required for servers operating in dynamic LPAR mode. The 7310-C06 HMC has one physical Ethernet port. The IBM 2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X Adapter (#5706) should be ordered to provide a second physical Ethernet connection. Two of these adapters can be ordered for a maximum of five Ethernet ports. Each server partition will have a physical connection to the network, and the HMC will be logically connected to each partition via its connection to the network. This connection is used to: Provide additional systems management, such as remote sharing support for i5/os system console sessions Collect and pass hardware service events to the HMC for automatic notification of error conditions to IBM Collect the total system inventory One Ethernet connection is required for each server controlled by the console. Either a serial port for modem attachment or an Ethernet connection is required if the Service Agent call-home function is implemented. Higher availability configurations may require the use of an Ethernet switch. An Ethernet switch will provide a physical connection from the HMC to each server rather than a logical Ethernet connection over a LAN. Information regarding HMC control of clustered servers under the control of CSM for AIX 5L and CSM for Linux on POWER software can be found in the IBM System Cluster 1600 Facts and Features Report available at sters/hardware/factsfeatures.html Information regarding supported Linux distributions on System p5 and System i5 servers is available at If redundant HMC function is wanted, the servers can be attached to two separate HMCs to address availability requirements. Environments may include 7310-C03, 7310-C04, 7310-C05, 7310-C06, 7310-CR2, 7310-CR3, or 7310-CR4 HMCs. Limitations The HMC is a dedicated-function device used only for the control and service functions of the POWER5 or POWER5+ processor-based servers it manages. It is not available for use as a general purpose computing resource. Each console must be configured with a graphics display, a keyboard, and a mouse. Various native language keyboards are available for the console. The HMC display menus and control information have been translated and limited to the following languages: IBM United States Announcement IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 7

8 Belgian Dutch Brazilian Portuguese Czech English French German Hungarian Italian Japanese Korean Russian Simplified Chinese Slovakian Spanish Traditional Chinese The number of servers each console can control varies by server size and complexity. Each server partition will have a physical connection to the network, and the 7310-C06 console will be logically connected to each partition via the network connection. For details on the number of servers and LPARs supported, view the HMC Function and Hardware Prerequisites PDF at /set2/sas/f/hmc/power5/tips/home.html HMC performance may vary, depending on the unique combination of servers and LPARs implemented. Planning information Cable orders: One Ethernet cable is required to attach the HMC to the system central electronics complex. This cable can be customer-supplied or purchased from IBM. Security, auditability, and control This product uses the security and auditability features of the server operating system. Use of these facilities is optional. For servers with the i5/os operating system, the security measures supplied by i5/os are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The i5/os security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only the functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the i5/os controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures. This product uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5L for POWER V5.2 or V5.3 operating system on an AIX partition that the HMC controls. The HMC network connection to the partitions is based on a component of IBM's Reliable, Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) called Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC). The only operations permitted through this connection are hardware error event collection and hardware inventory data collection, dynamic LPAR resource movement coordination for AIX and Linux partitions, and partition shutdown and reboot for AIX and Linux partitions. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
