1 Hardware Announcement January 25, 2005 IBM 7310-CR3 Rack-mounted Hardware Management Console performs resource management for configuring and operating IBM POWER5 servers Overview The IBM 7310-CR3 Rack-mounted Hardware Management Console (HMC) is a dedicated workstation that allows you to configure and manage partitions and Capacity on Demand on POWER5 servers. An integrated hardware management application helps you configure and partition the server through a GUI. In addition, operating system console support is provided for IBM i5/os using a 5250 programming interface. This can potentially save the cost of a separate IBM i5 console. The 7310 HMC helps you manage LPAR configurations to: Create and store LPAR profiles that define the processor, memory, and I/O resources allocated to an individual partition Start, stop, and reset a system partition Boot a partition or system by selecting a profile Display system and partition status Display a virtual operator panel of the contents for each partition or controlled system The IBM p5 590 and 595 and i5 595 must have access to an HMC. An HMC is required to manage any POWER5 server when Capacity Upgrade on Demand is implemented. The HMC offers a service focal point for the systems it controls. It is connected to a dedicated port on the service processor of the POWER5 system via an Ethernet connection. The Ethernet connections from HMC to p5 590 and 595 and i5 595 must be via private LAN, whereas other POWER5 systems can be either private or public. LAN tools are available for determining problems and providing service support, such as call-home and error log notification, through a modem or the Internet. Multiple POWER5 processor-based servers can be supported by one HMC, located locally or remotely attached. The IBM 7014-T00 or -T42 racks are recommended. For IBM iseries servers (MT 9405/9406), feature number 0551 or 0553 represents the same rack. For OpenPower servers, a standard 19-inch rack is recommended. To ensure proper air flow for cooling, the 7310-CR3 requires a rack with a perforated door, such as the IBM 7014-T00 or -T42 (iseries #0551 or #0553). The front door must be removed if the 7310-CR3 is mounted in a rack where the door panel is of solid construction. Each HMC must have access to a graphics display, keyboard, and mouse. In addition to the displays offered as features of the HMC, the IBM 7316-TF2 and 7316-TF3 rack-mounted displays and associated VGA switch are supported as well as existing IBM T541H, P76, P77, P260, and P275 graphics displays. The 7316 display is recommended for situations where space is constrained and includes a travel keyboard and mouse. USB keyboards and mouse that are feature numbers of the HMC cannot be used with the A logical connection between the HMC and each active partition on the POWER5 server via a network is recommended. It is required for servers operating in dynamic LPAR mode. The Rack-mounted 7310-CR3 HMC has two physical Ethernet ports. One is for a physical connection to the POWER5 server, and the This announcement is provided for your information only. 4 other can be used for a physical connection to the network. The 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PCI Adapter II (#4962) should be ordered to provide a second physical Ethernet connection. Each server partition will have a physical connection to the network, and the HMC will be logically connected to each partition via its connection to the network. This connection is used to: Provide additional systems management, such as remote sharing support for i5/os system console sessions Collect and pass hardware service events to the Hardware Management Console to automatically notify IBM of error conditions Collect the total system inventory One Ethernet connection is required for each POWER5 server controlled by the console. Either a serial port for modem attachment or an Ethernet connection is required if the Service Agent call-home function is implemented. A USB external 1.44 MB diskette drive (#2591) is available for the rack-mounted HMC. Functions on the HMC offer an option to use a diskette, including copying various key files and Vital Product Data (VPD) Console Proxy: The 5250 Console Proxy function provides local i5/os system console support via the HMC console. To provide additional operation flexibility, the Console Proxy s session sharing capability allows multiple workstations to attach to the HMC and act as 5250 consoles to the i5/os server. The workstations can be LAN-attached or WAN-attached to the HMC using Telnet5250 or TN5250 client support. This allows multiple system operators to consult on an operational question or for a remote operator to handle operational questions or issues. The Console Proxy provides the mechanisms to establish a connection with each individual client and multiplex the clients through a single connection through the Hardware Server component on the HMC to the target i5/os partitions. The number of connections depends on the capability of the server. A single instance of the Console Proxy runs on the HMC, providing this remote sharing capability for sessions to multiple partitions. Only one session applies toward the maximum number of partitions supported, even if multiple workstations are participating in the i5/os console activity. Language support is consistent with other functions of the HMC. To support the remote TN5250 sessions and the secure passage of user IDs and passwords to i5/os partitions, as well as session keys to share 5250 sessions between multiple users, the 5250 Console Proxy supports SSL encryption between the Console Proxy and the remote TN5250 clients. Limitations The HMC is a dedicated-function device used only for the control and service functions of the POWER5 servers it serves. It is not available for use as a general purpose computing resource. Each console must be configured with a graphics display, a keyboard, and a mouse. Various native language keyboards are available for the console. The HMC display menus and control information have been translated into the following languages: Belgian Dutch Brazilian Portuguese Czech English French German Hungarian Italian Japanese Korean Russian Simplified Chinese Slovakian Spanish Traditional Chinese The number of servers each console can control varies by server size and complexity. Each server partition will have a physical connection to the network and the 7310 console will be logically connected to each partition via the network connection. For details on the number of servers and LPARs supported, visit HMC performance may vary, depending on the unique combination of servers and LPARs implemented. The 7310 HMC only supports POWER5 servers. Information regarding HMC control of clustered servers under the control of Cluster Systems Management for AIX (CSM) can be found in the Scaling Statement section of the Family IBM eserver Cluster 1600, Sales Manual. Information regarding supported Linux distributions on POWER5 servers is available at: If redundant HMC function is desired, the POWER5 servers can be attached to two separate HMCs to address availability requirements. Environments may include 7310-C03 or 7310-CR2 HMCs when the HMC for POWER5 Licensed Machine Code is V4.4.0 provided in APAR MB00691, which is planned to be available February 18, For details, visit hmc/power5 Planning information Cable orders: One Ethernet cable is required to attach the HMC to the system central electronics complex. This cable can be customer-supplied or purchased from IBM. Security, auditability, and control This product uses the security and auditability features of the server operating system. Use of these facilities is optional. For servers with the i5/os operating system, the security measures supplied by i5/os are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The i5/os security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only the functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the i5/os controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures

5 This product uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5L for POWER V5.2 or V5.3 operating system on an AIX partition that the HMC controls. The HMC network connection to the partitions is based on a component of IBM s Reliable, Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) called Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC). The only operations permitted through this connection are hardware error event collection and hardware inventory data collection, dynamic LPAR resource movement coordination for AIX and Linux partitions, and partition shutdown/reboot for AIX/Linux partitions. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
