Societal benefits Near Real Time Products Support Coast Guard search and rescue operations Increase efficiency and safety of maritime shipping Plot routes for recreational sailing and boating Track oil and other pollutants (e.j. marine litter) Improve coastal water quality and reduce human exposure to pollutants Manage marine fisheries Design marine parks and conservation areas Assess the potential of ocean energy Multi Year Products Monitor climate change Assess the impacts of climate change on coastal habitats Increase precision in weather and climate forecasts Predict storm surge Mitigate coastal erosion
Step by step challenges 1 Networking and joint activities INVENTORY TRAINING & R&D BEST PRACTICES 2 Enhancing the use of HFR data STANDARDIZED DATA MANAGEMENT INTEGRATING EU MONITORING INFRASTRUCTURES CAPITALIZING SHOW CASES 3 To act as a European component LINK WITH GLOBAL HF RADAR EUROPEAN NODE JOINT STRATEGY OF DEVELOPMENT FROM REGIONAL DRIVERS
Successes Networking and joint activities INVENTORY TRAINING & R&D BEST PRACTICES Updated inventory (Feb 2018) with 10 new stations + 9 expected before New COST proposal ROSOME led by L. Wyatt (Univ Sheffield) with 34 proposers. Submitted in Apr Feedback expected Nov ROW 2017 International Radiowave Oceanography Workshop. Lüneburg. Sep 19-21, 2017 organized by HZG, with different contributions from European actors Summer school on HF and X-band radars, Aug 2017 Caen (France)
Successes Networking and joint activities INVENTORY TRAINING & R&D BEST PRACTICES Coordinated actions in different projects: JERICO-NEXT with homogenization, innovation, standardization and demonstration for the use of HFR in the coastal observatories; EMODnet-Physics contributing to unlock access to data and giving visibility to INCREASE catalogue; CMEMS: INCREASE (CMEMS SE 1) outputs will be transferred into CMEMS INSTAC 2 (HFR products in V5 Apr 2019); 2 new projects with participation of the HFR TT will ensure the presence of HFR in CMEMS SE and UU actions in SeaDataCloud for building historical products for reanalysis purposes and for standard improvements. Special effort has been dedicated to ensure the EU standards for HFR data and metadata is compliant with SeaDataCloud requirements. MYCOAST Atlantic Area INTERREG project (Dec 2017-Jun2020) will contribute on the standardization of the HFR data from IBIROOS and on their use in tools for Coastal risk management.
Successes Enhancing the use of HFR data STANDARDIZED DATA MANAGEMENT INTEGRATING EU MONITORING INFRASTRUCTURES CAPITALIZING SHOW CASES JERICO-NEXT provided in March 2017 Deliverable D5.13 Recommendation Report 1 for HFR data implementation in European infrastructures: NEXT-Deliverable-5.13_V1.pdf. European common data and metadata model Reference Card - all you need to know about HFR data harmonization at a glance:

Successes Enhancing the use of HFR data STANDARDIZED DATA MANAGEMENT INTEGRATING EU MONITORING INFRASTRUCTURES CAPITALIZING SHOW CASES More systems have been connected through THREDDS catalogue (EMODnet Physics and INCREASE framework): 32 radial stations connected in May Joint Projects like INTERREGs will support the standardization of stations (e.j. MYCOAST 15 stations in IBIROOS).
Successes Enhancing the use of HFR data STANDARDIZED DATA MANAGEMENT INTEGRATING EU MONITORING INFRASTRUCTURES CAPITALIZING SHOW CASES CMEMS week User workshop (Brussels, 26 Sep attendees). Presentation of the European framework, INCREASE outputs and show cases of HFR applications. Brussels, CMEMS Week 26 September attendees Progress in demonstrating integrated approaches in the framework of JERICO-Next JRAPs with HF Radar contributions. Oral presentations in EGU2018 OS2.4 9 April (Oceanography at coastal scales. Modelling, coupling, observations and benefits from coastal Research Infrastructures) New project from CMEMS User Uptake 2: IBISAR, Skill assessment service for real-time ranking of met-ocean data products in the IBI area for emergency and SAR operators
Successes To act as a European component LINK WITH GLOBAL HF RADAR EUROPEAN NODE JOINT STRATEGY OF DEVELOPMENT Participation and oral presentation representing European community in Radiowave Operators Working Group (ROWG) March 2017 Texas A&M University. Accepted oral presentation in 4th Ocean Radar Conference for Asia-Pacific (ORCA), Okinawa, Japan on June 2-4, Ongoing action on designing the role of the HF Radar European Node including the links with Data providers and the European Data Infrastrucutre (INSTAC, SDC, EMODnet). JERICO-NEXT Subtask 3.2.2: On-going action for defining scenarios of development of HF Radar network for surface current mapping including requirements and technical aspects.

A European common data and metadata model will be settled complying with the existing European infrastructures (CMEMS INSTAC, SeaDataNet, EMODnet Physics). A workcamp will be organized in Bilbao, Autumn 2018 for supporting the application of the established standards. All European HF Radar data providers will be invited. The role of the European HFR Node will be established. Kickoff of HFR products in CMEMS catalogue. First products will be available in CMEMS Catalogue V5 in Apr 2019 The outputs of different current projects will be reviewed, including European and national projects. As examples: Additional CMEMS HFRrelated projects have recently been approved, where HFR data products will be used to improve coastal altimetry (CMEMS SE COMBAT) and demonstrate its potential for SAR operations (CMEMS UU IBISAR). New applications will be developed in the framework of MYCOAST project (AA INTERREG), in particular new HFR data will be implemented in NARVAL tool Actions will be defined in the next meeting in October to improve the content in the EuroGOOS web and to improve the communication on the Task Team to all the community J.Horstmann (HZG) Indicative completion date J.Mader (AZTI) All providers sep-18 C.
