20 Modular Platforms eliability Legacy thought suggests that devices with fewer parts have fewer parts to fail. Intuition supports belief that the simpler device is more reliable However edundancy improves Data Center eliability. Thoughtful complexity can increase reliability. Informed design and testing of more complex systems can result in significantly improved reliability.

48 Electrical Safety for Data Center Managers & Owners What is NFPA 70E? NFPA 70E is a Standard for Electrical Safety in the Work Place Designed at the equest of OSHA* educe Exposure to: Shock Hazard Electrocution Arc Flash/Blast Each update calls for significant changes particularly in the areas of safety, maintenance and training. *OSHA , by law, requires electrically safe work practices. OSHA has stated NFPA 70E will be a document used to determine electrically safe work practices.
49 Electrical Safety for Data Center Managers & Owners NFPA 70E Conductors must be in safe working condition Off Energized work is allowed if: Less than 50 volts Life support equipment Emergency alarm systems Hazardous ventilation equipment Equipment design and limitations (has to be hot) Testing or troubleshooting Energized work requires an electrical Job Briefing (for each job-110.1h) and a work permit and a documented Shock isk Assessment with approved Arc flash labels*. *If labels are not installed or updated you can use the table method (130.7(C)(15)(A)(b) pg.70e-38
50 Electrical Safety for Data Center Managers & Owners Call to Action Engage and Educate Safety Committee Get an Electrical Safety assessment by a qualified firm Establish an Electrical Safety Program 1 Arc Flash isk Assessment 2 Incident Energy Analysis 3 Appropriate Equipment Labeling (as per NEC ) Engage outside contractors Adherence to NFPA 70E Job Briefing Meetings Work Permits isk Assessments Embrace Electrical Safety
