The content of this report is solely the responsibility of the authors and is not necessarily endorsed by MNIS, CURA, or the University of Minnesota The Minneapolis Neighborhood Information System (MNIS) is a collaborative capacity-building effort intended to meet the needs of community-based organizations by providing access to property data that can inform community revitalization efforts and housing intervention and investment strategies. Partners in this project include the City of Minneapolis, the Neighborhood Revitalization Program, select Minneapolis neighborhood organizations, and CURA. Participating neighborhood groups receive training, project assistance, GIS expertise, and access to property information, as well as opportunities to share ideas about GIS projects and housing strategies with other neighborhoods. 3 Longfellow Buckthorn Busters Project Neighborhood: Longfellow Project Completion Date: September 2002 Neighborhood Contact: Patricia Patché Project Description: As part of its efforts to raise awareness and remove buckthorn in the neighborhood the Longfellow Community Council used GIS as one component of their Buckthorn Busters 2002 program. LCC sought to answer two questions as part of this project. 1. What are the specific areas targeted for the Buckthorn Busters survey? 2. Where are the participating residents located? 3. What are the properties where Buckthorn have been identified? Progress: At this stage of the project, we have completed our goal for question #1 and question #2. I am currently working on another map that would show all of the properties in the targeted area where buckthorn has been identified. This would provide the answer to question #3. Our volunteer surveyors have not yet finished surveying the targeted area to identify buckthorn, which means that we are still in the process of compiling our data base. Once all the data has been obtained, I will be able to complete this exciting project. Process: Several maps were created, as were flyers and information packages on Buckthorn. A listserv, mailing list, and database that was created based on information from a door-to door survey was also part of the project. Outcomes: The maps show the targeted areas for the project, the areas where Buckthorn has been removed, and once all of the surveys to identify buckthorn is finished, we will be able to create another maps that would show what properties have buckthorn. The maps will help identify the sites where the buckthorn removal will take place on the date of the event. Maps show targeted areas where volunteers can help haul the buckthorn. Results of the project can help inform outreach strategies for next year. Finally, documents created for this project can be used to support grant applications.

4 Data Sources: City of Minneapolis parcel data and base maps. Focus on data and base maps for Cooper, Howe, Hiawatha and Seward neighborhoods. LCC collected addresses of participants and locations of buckthorn removal efforts.
