2 Working Group s Purpose Interact with DOE to produce value-added benefits for DOE and contractors. Promote excellence in all aspects of Environmental Protection, Safety, and Health: Focusing on cost effective, efficient execution of DOE s mission, while maintaining safe, environmentally sound operations. Evaluating and selecting best in class ES&H practices, procedures, and tools for deployment. Promoting and facilitating the active exchange of successful programs, information of common interest, and improvement initiatives. Addressing issues of common interest, including initiatives to foster continuous ES&H improvement. Promoting cooperation and information interchange within EFCOG and with other entities while minimizing duplication of efforts.

4 Working Group s 2007 Accomplishments Held first meeting October 30 November 2, 2007, at the DOE NNSA Nevada Site Office in Las Vegas, Nevada, with ~ 110 participants. Transitioned the Electrical Safety Project Team to a sub group, contributing to Complex-Wide improved performance. Established aggressive goals, including establishing a Center of Excellence. Sponsored the DOE Annual Electrical Safety Meeting, ~200 participants, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Produced several key tools for training and hazards analysis. Developed an Electrical Safety Severity Index Tool to improve tracking and trending of events.

6 Working Group s 2007 Accomplishments Co-sponsored Ninth Annual Joint EFCOG/DOE Chemical Management Workshop, with ~ 230 participants. Completed a chemical inventory management benchmarking survey of twelve facilities/sites. Survey results used to encourage a graded approach to managing hazardous material inventories. Addressed key medical issues in the DOE Complex including a DOE Chief Medical Officer position and key occupational medical processes by the Occupational Medicine Sub Group with the DOE Office of Enforcement. Participated with DOE-HQ to address integrating Executive Order requirements with revised DOE Order 450, Environmental Management.

7 Working Group s 2007 Accomplishments IH/IS Sub Group worked with the Radiation Protection Sub Group to discuss approaches for balancing worker protection from industrial and radiological hazards. Assisted DOE with a Radiation Protection Workshop to address implementation of recent 10CFR835 revision. Chair of the Radiation Protection Sub Group attended a Nuclear Energy Institute meeting to discuss the Human Resource Shortages for the nuclear industry.

8 Look Ahead - Future Plans Host and/or Co-Host several key meetings of significant benefit to members. Electrical Safety Workgroup Chemical Management Workshop (starts March 3) 10CFR835 Radiation Protection Workshop Continue electrical safety improvements. Revision of DOE Electrical Safety Handbook Continue to promote the electrical event severity tool used to better quantify risk IH/IS Sub Group to assess the impacts to contractors of complying with 10CFR851 requirements for performing exposure assessments.

9 2008 Work Plans Enhance ISO certification and VPP STAR recognition benefits to DOE contractors. Work with DOE-HQ to streamline DOE oversight and address 10CFR851 penalty mitigation for certification/recognition. Continue integration efforts on DOE Order 450 and Executive Order Complete development of an Environmental Management System Handbook. Publish a Contractor Guide for a Standardized Process for Low Hazard Exposure Assessment.
