6 ALOYS FLEISCHMANN ON HIS MASS FOR PEACE Fleishmann s introdution to the Deemer 1988 Radio Éireann roadast o the ork erormed y the Gaudete Singers ith the RTÉ Conert Orhestra, onduted y ohn Hughes There is in Cork an organisation alled PEACE P or rayer, E or enterrise and ACE or and Christian endeavour. This ame aout in a rather urious ay. When the IRA amaign roke out in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, a letter to the ress rom a Holy Ghost ather asked or uli rayers or eae. A Corkman, Mr. Ceil Huritz, ansered the letter, suggesting that a national organisation e set u to suort this idea. Only Cork resonded, and a start as made in 197 ith a grou alling itsel PEACE. The organisation gre, and it as deided to hold a ig annual onelerated mass in St. Franis Churh, and to invite a series o loal omosers to rite seially or the oasion, eah omoser s mass to e reeated in the to olloing years. I haened to e the irst omoser to e asked, and I deided to rite a mass or massed shool hoirs and the Cork Symhony Orhestra. So in 1977 three ig hoirs, o the onvent shools o South Presentation, St. Vinent and St. Aloysius, numering aout 50 youngsters in all, ent to the troule o learning the mass, and ith an orhestra o 6 layers, e erormed it in St. Franis Churh, taking u a great deal o sae in the south transet, under rather diiult aoustial onditions. You ill no hear it sung y an adult hoir, and I am very grateul to Catain Ryan and his hoir, and to Mr. ohn Hughes and the Conert Orhestra or alloing it to e heard on RTÉ. Perhas I might add that the mass is dediated to my ie Anne. First there omes an Entrane Hymn, Give eae, Lord, to those that ait or You the mood is urgent, even demanding, ith a sot inal aeal. Then omes the Kyrie, ith some elements o lain hant. The start and end o the Gloria is juilant enough. There is no Credo, ut a Resonsorial Psalm The Lord seaks o eae to His eole, olloed y the Gosel Alamation. The Santus asires to e etherial and a it mystial, and there is a very rie Agnus Dei. Next omes the Communion Hymn As runs the thirsting deer, the ig tune o hih omes tie, and inally there is a Reessional Hymn The eae o the Lord reigns on high, let us raise the Lord so there is a hane to end u ith a ig i rather short limax. The PEACE organisation no holds to annual masses one or Industrial Peae in Otoer, and one or Peae and Reoniliation in Marh. Sine 1979 the omosers have een Mr. Mihael O Callaghan, Dr. Delan Tonsend, Mr. Angel Climent, and the next omoser ill e Mr. ohn Murhy, Diretor o the Cork Shool o Musi.
