3 1 ABSTRACT My dissertation is a musical comosition or a chamber ensemble o sixteen layers, scored or lute and iccolo, oboe, clarinet in Bb, bassoon, horn in F, trumet in Bb, trombone, ercussion ( layers), iano, violin I, violin II, viola, violoncello, and contrabass It is seciically ritten or the University o Ioa Center or Ne Music Ensemble, and has been read by the ensemble to times to rovide the secure orchestration ideas under the direction o Proessor David Gomer The Revival o a Waning Moon is a single-movement ork or aroximately 15 minutes 0 seconds in duration The harmonic content o the ork is derived rom the ive hexachords that I labeled H-I through H-V o my on reerence, are H-I [0178], H-II [01578], H-III [0168], H-IV [01567], and H-V [0179] Even though all o the six chords are associated ith each other to establish overall harmonic contents, among those the H-II is mainly cultivated or the thematic harmony The subsets rom the H-II, such as trichord [015] and tetrachord [0157], roduce thematic melodic contents and associates ith other harmonies throughout the iece Metric modulation is utilized beteen the sections here the rhythmic elements are emhasized ajinmori, a Korean traditional rhythmic attern is emloyed to describe a Korean olk dance hich usually done in the moon night Brake drums and gongs are esecially used or imitating the sonorities o Korean ercussion instruments Formally the ork is comrised o three arts (ABA ) Each art has a e divisional sections, hich are connected and incororates each other in terms o their harmonic elements, but is develoed ith the various rhythmic gestures in dierent temi
