3 Transcendental Sonnets (2001-2) by Kyle Gann ones Very ( ) as the son o to cousins ho never married: his ather a roving sea catain, his mother an outsoken atheist. This as a diicult beginning or a young man in 19th-century Salem, Massachusetts, and Very comensated by becoming intensely religious, and by enrolling at Harvard, here he on the distinguished odoin rize or his essays, graduated second in his class, and as aterard hired as a Greek tutor. In Setember o his third year as tutor, 188, he began! telling his students that the Holy Sirit as seaking through him. The President o Harvard immediately removed him, and Very as laced in an asylum or a month, released hen his caretakers conirmed that he as harmless. In the next year and a hal, Very rote over 00 oems o an ecstatic nature, some o them ritten rom the oints o vie o God, Christ, and the Holy Ghost. "[N]one can hear," he rote ith touching oignancy, "the man gron silent in the raise o God." Luckily, beore the onset o his madness - i madness it as - Very had been beriended by several members o the Transcendentalist movement, including esecially Ralh Waldo Emerson, ronson Alcott, and Elizabeth Palmer Peabody. His suorters ere struck ith the insight ith hich Very dissected and deconstructed the souls o the eole he met and harangued, rominent ministers among them. As the redoubtable Transcendentalist scholar Perry Miller uts it, "y 189 insanity as a haza!rd the Transcendentalists ere reared to run... The Transcendental theory o genius ractically demanded one or to mad oets; most Transcendentalists ere not quite reared to sacriice themselves, and Very vindicated the theory by roving a illing victim." In 189 Emerson collected and edited some sixty o Very's oems and essays and had them ublished in book orm. Very's oetic outut rom this eriod comrises a little-knon and ertile ount o Western mysticism. As a oet he has been atly criticized or the narroness o his range and the monochromaticism o his tone - and yet the elegantly natural concision o his language and the enetrating oer o his metahors result in many unorgettable assages. The intensity o his ecstatic state sometimes melts aay!syntax, leaving behind assages orthy o a ost-calvinist Gertrude Stein. Very oresa that his ecstasy ould last not much more than a year. In late 189 it aded, and although he as inally licensed to reach, he had retired by 18, and lived out his last our decades in shadoy obscurity, still riting oetry that by then, devoid o the Holy Sirit's inusions, had become mechanical and edestrian. A regular ilgrim to Walden Pond since the early 1980s, I have nurtured a lielong ascination ith Transcendentalism; this is not the irst time I have set its oetry. All o the oems by Very I chose or Transcendental Sonnets are rom the eriod, and all o them are sonnets - overhelmingly Very's avorite genre, and the one in hich he did his most eloquent ork. "The Son" is one o his best-knon, most idely rerinted verses. Many o his inest oems are dark ortrayals o an earth eoled by the alking dead, those ho live outside daily communion ith God: I elt that I should im!ose on the audience no more than to o these, "Enoch" and "Faith." I as touched by "Enoch"'s sad image o a lonely God alking on the earth, and its quintessentially Transcendentalist oint that the true temle o God isn't churches o stone and ood, but the human soul. "Love" aealed to me or its very musical image o a long journey
4 brought around again to its starting oint. The inal song is made u rom to o his most mystical sonnets, both titled "The Word"; I omit the last six lines rom the irst oem, hich aint too contrasting a mood. In setting texts I alays allo the text to lead, and to suggest the style o the music, ith the result here that the songs suggest historical idioms more directly than anything else I've ritten. The roject, as I sa it, as to ind ithin the context o ostminimalism a style, or several styles, o contrauntal choral singing hich ould be gratiying to sing. The!irst movement, "The Son," as dran very much rom the structure o the oem, ith the addition that the our arts o the choir each introduce their lines o text indeendently, in echoing but contrasting melodies. The remaining our movements ollo - though alays ithin a ostminimalist context, ith its limitation o harmonic materials - a stylistic rogression rom the music o Very's youth to the resent day. "Enoch" reresents the 18th-century American hymn and uging tune (one might say a "Stravinskyized" William illings); "Love" a 19th-century romantic choral style; "Faith" a more dissonant, modernist relationshi o harmonies; and "The Word" a ostmodern concetion using asects o minimalism ith the rhythmic ideas o Henry Coell and Conlon Nancarro!, attemting more than the others to cature Very's ecstatic state. I hoe that this symhony o America!n salms ill be a testament to our native, Yankee brand o sirituality.
