3 rogram Notes rom childhood throughout my adult lie, there hae een many eole rom history that I hae looked uon as heroes, eole ho hae exhiited courage and a sellessness that goes ell eyond the normal limits othe aerage indiidual One such hero is Harriet Ross Tuman, orn Araminta Ross (122191) The act that she escaed to reedom ut then took on the resonsiility o returning to here she had escaed rom to ree others to a etter lie is amazing and insiring to me With slae catchers and ounty hunters on the search, she ut hersel in harm's ay many times to hel others Most o Harriet Tuman's ork heling slaes to the north as done y means o the nderground Railroad, a large netork o eole ho gae hel to ugitie slaes to get to the Northern states o the S or to Canada The system as not actually underground or a railroad ut got its name ecause o its methods The system did hoeer use railroad terms to descrie certain asects Rest stos ere called stations or deots, eole in charge o stations ere called stationmasters, and eole in charge o moing eole rom one station to another ere called conductors, or hich Harriet Tuman as the later Tuman also ecame reerred to as Moses, named ater the ilical man ho led the eish oulation rom Egyt Tuman ould later sere as an antislaery adocate, articiate in the omen's rights moement, and sere as a nurse, scout, and sy or the nion Army When Harriet Tuman arried at lantations, she used coded songs/sirituals to gather, grou and gie instructions to ugitie slaes or trael northard These coded songs originated in the churches o Arican American slaes Songs like Wade in the Water roided escae instructions in the lyrics The title o the song is actually an instruction to ade across streams as a method to kee loodhounds rom scenting their tracks ollo the Drinking Gourd not only contained hidden instructions, ut also coneyed a detailed ma o ho to reach Canada The Drinking Gourd reerred to the constellation the Big Dier or hich the North Star is included Slaes kne that i they olloed it they ere headed north Another aorite song o Harriet Tuman, Go Don Moses as used as a signal to let slaes kno that she as in the area and that a tri northard as eing lanned I chose to use this song as thematic material or this comosition ecause o its comelling and haunting nature, and its amiliarity Other comositional elements contained in Harriet are ased on the melodic and harmonic structure o Go Don Moses I had een aiting or the right oortunity to rite a comosition insired y Harriet Tuman or years so hen Dr Thomas McCauley aroached me ith the ossiility I immediately acceted the commission I hae knon Tom a numer o years no and eery roect e hae collaorated on has een a antastic, siritual exerience Tom alays rings a irant dynamic to the music that goes ell eyond ust the notes on the age, and he is a irst class artist The remiere y Tom and his antastic grou as amazing, and as so emotional it rought tears to my eyes I thank him and his students or such an amazing musical exerience inally, there ere many tyes o eole inoled in the nderground Railroad The success o the nderground Railroad deended uon eole o dierent races, creeds, and colors orking together or a common good This is ust another examle o hat can e accomlished i e ork together and realize that Our Destinies Are Tied Together, None O s Can Make It Alone Moement I Araminta's Escae Harriet Tuman as orn Araminta Ross Ater her escae, she took on the irst name Harriet and used her married name o Tuman My aim in this 1st moement as to reresent hat must hae een a dangerous, terriying and anxiety ridden irst escae There are short quotes rom the song Go Don Moses throughout or the last section o this moement, I used the song Go Don Moses to reresent her lieration into a ne lie and her resole to hel others to reedom Moement II Stranger in a Strange Land This moement reresents the solitude o eing aay rom home and amily It as during this time that she inds ork to und her return tris and makes intricate lans to return to Maryland to hel ree her amily and others Moement III Moses The eginning o this moement returns to the tension and anxiety o articiating in the escaes o other slaes including amily memers, through the nderground Railroad The title is a reerence to the act that many reerred to Harriet Tuman as Moses The middle section o this moement returns to the song Go Don Moses It ends in a siritually eocatie mood reminding us o Harriet s courage and heroic accomlishments in the ace o danger and adersity
