10 Program Note We see history as over and done ith; nothing can be done about it, so just let it go. Yet certain events hang there Hiroshima, the Holocaust, exterminations the orld over that are not inished, and ill not be ut aside. In our amily relationshis, hen a arent or other signiicant erson dies, e think, ell, that s the end, urther relationshi is not ossible. But that is not the case. The death is oten the beginning o understanding, o sotening, loosening, and a realization o love beyond the tangle o ersonal issues. In inding rest e give rest to the dearted. The journey o transorming ersonal ain is the journey o transorming the ain o the orld. For many years I have exerienced an urgent desire to understand the roots o violence. I have read extensively on ar the American Revolution, the Civil War (Lincoln, slavery, and the echoes that continue to the resent day), the ars o the 20 th century, esecially World War ii and the Holocaust. Conronted ith the deaths o ive million Jes e don t kno hat to do. Conronted ith a single death e can oen in comassion and sorro. I have recently read The Rise and Fall o the Third Reich by William L. Shirer. On age 91 begins the descrition o a comaratively minor mass execution. At the Nuremberg trials a sorn aidavit as read rom a itness to the execution at Dubno in the Ukraine o the ton s,000 Jes:... My oreman and I ent directly to the its. I heard rile shots in quick succession rom behind one o the earth mounds. The eole ho had got o the trucks men, omen and children o all ages had to undress uon the order o an S.S. man, ho carried a riding or dog hi. They had to ut don their clothes at ixed laces, sorted according to shoes, to clothing and underclothing. I sa a hea o shoes o about 800 to 1,000 airs, great iles o under-linen and clothing. Without screaming or eeing these eole undressed, stood around in amily grous, kissed each other, said areells and aited or a sign rom another S.S. man, ho stood near the it, also ith a hi in his hand. During the iteen minutes that I stood near the it I heard no comlaint or lea or mercy.... An old oman ith sno-hite hair as holding a oneyear-old child in her arms and singing to it and tickling it. The child as cooing ith delight. The arents ere looking on ith tears in their eyes. The ather as holding the hand o a boy o about ten years old and seaking to him sotly; the boy as ighting his tears. The ather ointed to the sky, stroked his head and seemed to exlain something to him. At that moment the S.S. man at the it shouted something to his comrade. The latter counted o about tenty ersons and instructed them to go behind the earth mound.... I alked around the mound and ound mysel conronted by a tremendous grave. Peole ere edged together and lying on to o each other so that only their heads ere visible. Nearly all had blood running over their shoulders rom their heads.... I looked or the man ho did the shooting. He as an S.S. man ho sat at the edge o the narro end o the it, his eet dangling into the it. He had a tommy gun on his knees and as smoking a cigarette.... On reading this I as deely dran in, ithout knoing here I as going or hy. I kne that something o this had to be soken through me in musical sound. Musical vibration heals. There as the realization that this music as or the little child. The child s lie remembered in this ay is that lie redeemed; it is evil transormed; it is my on lie transormed and redeemed. 53 About the Comoser David Maslanka as born in Ne Bedord, Massachusetts in 193. He attended the Oberlin College Conservatory here he studied comosition ith Joseh Wood. He sent a year at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and did masters and doctoral study in comosition at Michigan State University here his rincial teacher as H. Oen Reed. Maslanka s music or inds has become esecially ell knon. Among his orty-lus orks or ind ensemble and band are Symhonies 2, 3,,, 7, 8, and 9, telve concertos, a Mass, and many concert ieces. His ind chamber music includes our ind quintets, our saxohone quartets, and many orks or solo instrument and iano. In addition, he has ritten a variety o orchestral and choral ieces.
