2 ASTRACT ii Elainie Lillios, Advisor lux is a single movement orchestral ork o ive minutes and ortyive seconds in length The instrumentation consists o to lutes, iccolo, to ooes, English horn, to clarinets in lat, ass clarinet, to assoons, contraassoon, our horns in, three trumets in C, to tromones, tua, timani, ercussion (three layers), iano, har, and strings lux is insired y Norse mythology, seciically Yggdrasil, or the orld tree hose exansive ranches hold together the nine orlds and the characters ho inhait the tree lux is cast in triartite orm Its oening section has a mysterious lyrical atmoshere; the oening starts ith a single note carried orard y various oodind soloists As the section develos, ascending oodind runs and string glissandi lead to an arut Grand ause Section exhiits a comlete textural and melodic change rom Section A Section s overall style is more staccato and ast aced, moving raidly eteen choirs, ith the marima, oodlock and guiro adding a oodensounding timre and texture Section C reerences material rom the irst to sections, increasing in density and melodic material uilding to a loud, oerul ending Several creatures rom Norse mythology serve as temlates or lux s melodic, rhythmic, and textural elements The unnamed eagle ho lives in the treeto is illustrated y seeing, highitched melodic assages in the violins A melodic chorale in the rench horns reresents the our stags, Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór, hile scattered melodies in the oodinds and ooden ercussion symolize Ratatoskr the squirrel, ho serves as a messenger that runs u and don the tree
