Is someone ilming an eic biblical movie No, I am assured, these shee are real. The sheherd asses through here every year. The cook alays takes him a beer. Eventually, the lock goes on its ay, but ive lambs are accidentally let behind. Someone calls the olice, and to oicers come, and they try to contact the sheherd. No one knos hat to do in the meantime, but the lambs are cute, so everyone (including the olicemen) starts taking hotos. Finally, the sheherd drives u in the icku truck to retrieve his lambs. ut the lambs don t ant to be retrieved; they are hay here ith lots o grass, lots o attention, and no roaming. The sheherd and olicemen have trouble catching the lambs, but ater an hour they do inally get them all into the truck, and the sheherd drives aay. These shee can t have anything to do ith this iece, hich as nearly inished by the time they visited. ut I nevertheless eel some strange connectio Maybe the shee simly make a good illustration o my surroundings, hich in turn inluence

3 the music I rite. Maybe there are visual similarities, hoever coincidental, beteen the layout o the score and the arrangement o the lambs. Or maybe they oer some imossibly corny metahor about my comositional rocess: maybe the lambs are some abstract musical ideas rom my ast orks hich I revisit in this iece. So then am I the sheherd ho comes back to get them, only to ind them unilling to come Or am I one o the olicemen ho just takes ictures o them because he doesn t kno hat else to do And ho exactly does one take a icture o an abstract musical idea This logic is clearly going nohere. I am just mysel, riting this iece, contemlating its various connections to my rior art hile I look out the indo at shee. rior Art as ritten or Seculum Musicae hile in residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany. Duration: aroximately 14 minutes erormance Notes: On aer, this music may look easy. Do not be ooled! While the individual arts are not very technically challenging, issues o tuning, balance, timing, and timbre require amle ensemble rehearsal time to address. Double ass: Double ass sounds one octave loer than ritte About Time: There are three aroaches to time used in the iece: Regular Meter: These sections are indicated by a seciic time signature and metronome marking, regular noteheads, and the indication regular meter. 5 Indeterminate Measure Lengths: These sections are indicated by solid, stemless noteheads and the indication each measure x-y. The conductor should give only the donbeat o each measure, and he or she should vary the length o each measure as indicated (usually beteen to and ive seconds). Avoid any sense o a regular ulse. In these sections, rests are used as ollos: o = layer may begin the rest at any oint ithin the measure (o his or her choosing) o = layer may end the rest at any oint ithin the measure (o his or her choosing) o = layer should end the note just ater the donbeat o the measure Indeendent Time: In this section, individual layers and grous o layers maintain time indeendently rom the rest o the ensemble. It is indicated by the use o diamond-enclosed, numbered rehearsal markings (instead o the circle-enclosed letter rehearsal markings used in the rest o the iece) and by the indications conductor gives only cues and reeat indeendently. The conductor should give each numbered cue, but should not otherise beat time or give measures until rehearsal number six, here he or she should beat regular meter or the strings (hile other layers continue indeendently o the conductor). For cues one through ive, the amount o time beteen cues is not indicated; it is comletely at the discretion o the conductor. layers should ollo the indications about ho to reeat their gestures. Note that the bass clarinet and lute must coordinate ith each other so that they lay together hile still maintaining indeendence rom the rest o the ensemble. Other Notational Conventions: = niente = midoint dynamic (dynamic in arentheses reresents a seciic midoint ithin the crescendo) l.v. = let vibrate, = breath mark (For non-ind instruments, insert a small ga o silence as i you ere taking a breath.) Match each attack to revious note s decay = This notation, attached to a decrescendo, accomanies a series o reeated notes layed on iano or crotales. Simly match the dynamic o each ne attack to the dynamic to hich your revious note has naturally decayed. Additional Notes: Unless otherise indicated, hal note remains constant through all meter changes. All accidentals hold or the duration o the measure, but only in the sta and octave in hich they irst aear. During the indeendent time section (mm ), not all instrumental arts have the same number o measures as each other. Nevertheless, measure numbering in each art is ket consistent ith the score so that measure numbers ill remain synchronized through the entire iece. Within this section, do not attemt to count measures, but instead rely on the numbered cues. Have un!
