2 1 Abstract SMAVIA Appliances with preinstalled SMAVIA Recording Server software as of version 8.x.3 support the recording of video streams from 3rd party network cameras. This function allows for the integration of any type of camera into a VideoIP network if the camera transmits the video stream according to the standardised industry protocol. In general, all RTSP-enabled cameras should be compatible with Dallmeier recording systems. Practical experience shows that manufacturer-specific adaptations and deviations from the standardized industrial protocol have to be considered. In most cases, the resulting peculiarities of these cameras can be intercepted by extending the corresponding function of a recording system. In some cases, however, a lack of compatibility has to be determined. This document contains information on the functionality of the tested 3rd party network cameras. In addition, presentation conventions, framework conditions and requirements are discussed. 2 Range of Functions SMAVIA Appliances as of version 8.x.3 support 3rd party network cameras with the following recording options: Permanent Recording Network cameras that a RTSP video stream over UDP/RTP can be recorded in the Permanent mode. Recording with Motion Detection Network cameras sending a RTSP video stream over UDP/RTP and JPEGs over TCP/ HTTP can be recorded in the Motion mode. Configuration Network cameras supporting the ONVIF protocol can be configured directly over the SMAVIA Recording Server user interface. The support of the ONVIF protocol is not mandatory for recording (permanent or with Motion Detection). Audio SMAVIA Recording Server records RTSP video streams. The recording of RTSP audio streams is not integrated. The audio recording over the ONVIF protocol is not part of the test scope. 2

3 3 Conventions The database contains information about 3rd party network cameras that have been functionally tested with SMAVIA Appliances. Note the following conventions: The camera has not been tested with DMS DMS 2400 The camera has passed the functional test with DMS 2400 with version The camera has not passed the functional test with DMS 2400 with version The camera s functional range is not sufficient Disclaimer Despite a detailed test of the recording in the specified recording mode (functional test), the use of the complete functional range of the camera can not be assured. The functional test does not include a long-term test, a stability test or an examination of the image quality. In case of a hardware or firmware change by the manufacturer, Dallmeier cannot take any responsibility for the persistence of the compatibility. NOTE The compatibility of a 3rd party network camera depends on many influencing factors. Before actual use, always carry out a detailed test (long-term test, stability test, examination of image quality)! 3

4 5 Requirements The following minimum requirements are to be fulfilled by 3rd party network cameras when they are supposed to be recorded with SMAVIA appliances. Note that the audio stream is not recorded. the calculations for the recording mode Motion Detection are made on the appliance. A corresponding function of the camera is not used. 5.1 Protocols Currently, the following protocols can be used fo communication with suitable 3rd party network cameras: RTSP ONVIF 1.02 ONVIF Profile S 2.1 HTTP 5.2 Time Stamp While recording, date and time are written into the recording track. For this purpose, the time stamp sent by the network camera with the RTSP stream is used. The camera has to synchronize the internal time via a UTC time server (NTP). The camera and the SAMVIA Appliance have to use the same time server. The camera can use any SMAVIA Appliance directly as a time server (no external server required). 5.3 Permanent Recording over RTSP The RTSP standard has to be met. The GOP size has to be less than 30 frames per GOP. The frame rate has to be at least 5 frames per second (fps). The video stream has to be encoded in MPEG4 or H.264. The data rate (Mbps) and the GOP size (frames per GOP) have to be constant. The video streams has to be transmitted with RTP over UDP. 4

5 5.4 Recording with Motion Detection over RTSP and HTTP Motion detection is always calculated directly on the appliance. For this purpose, in addition to the RTSP stream with normal resolution, a smaller single image in JPEG format has to be retrieved permanently from the camera. The transfer of a JPEG by an HTTP request has to be supported. The transfer of the JPEGs has to be at least 2 frames per second. The transfer of the JPEGs may not exceed a delay of 2 seconds. The size of the JPEG may not exceed CIF (352 x 288). The JPEGs have to contain the same image section as the RTSP stream. If the configuration is done via the ONVIF protocol, the second encoder (JPEG) may have to be activated manually. 5.5 Recording over ONVIF Version 1.02 of the ONVIF standard has to be complied with. Version 2.1 of the ONVIF Profile S standard has to be complied with. The conformity of the network camera used can be checked at Overview Depending on the used 3rd party network camera and the desired recording, the above requirements have to be fulfilled at 100%.
