1 Essex County Open Space Conference Session 2: Making Data Work for You Part 1: Finding Landowner, deed, and assessors information MassGIS data viewer: OLIVER: Use OLIVER to find property information in your area of interest. Use the drop down menu or type the town name into the Zoom to Town tool (if you type it in it must be in all capitals.

2 -Use the zoom in/out and pan tools to look at different areas in the map. -Hover your curser over any tool to find out what it is. -Use the Identify tool to click on any parcels of interest. -Doing so will bring up the Identify results window. Click on the Tax Parcels for Query in the results. Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the window to view information on the map/lot, landowner, date the property was last sold and, if available, the recording information for the deed.

3 Navigate to the registry of deeds website: Northern Essex Registry of Deed (Andover, Lawrence, Methuen, North Andover) Southern Essex District Registry of Deeds (Amesbury, Beverly, Bradford, Boxford, Byfield, Danvers, Essex, Georgetown, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Haverhill, Ipwich, Lynnfield, Lynn, Magnolia, Manchester, Marblehead, Merrimac) Click the option to search for Records. Click the Book and Page tab and enter the information. If you don t have the book and page information you can enter the landowner name, town, and the last sold date in the Extended Search tab and that will often be fruitful.

4 After you click on Document Info you ll get a list of results (hopefully!) There will be a row for every person involved in the transaction so expect to see many rows for each transaction. Look at the Book and Page info to determine if they are the same document. Click on the img link, which will open the deed. Once that s opened you can download the document by clicking Download/Print document. Note: you can choose TIF or PDF as the format.

5 Part 2: Finding natural resource information using OLIVER In OLIVER turn on and off any layers of interest. You can search for a layer in the Search layers window or refer to the attached document with a list of datalayers and their location in OLIVER s file structure.

6 You can modify the color and transparency of the data and view the metadata by right clicking on a data layer. In the same area you can also change the order of the layers or turn them on and off. To measure an area, click the measure tool in the bottom left hand corner. Make sure to set whether you re measuring a length or an area and then set the units. To clear a measurement, click the clear measurement tool to the right of the results window. Once you re happy with your map click the print map icon in the upper right hand corner. In the Print/Save dialog box enter a title for your map then click OK. It may take a few minutes for the map to be assembled.

7 Click the here link in the Map Ready dialog box that opens. A new window will open with your map. In the window that opens you can save the map and legend separately or use the browser option to print or export the entire map. You can use the images on their own or insert them into powerpoint or your favorite layout software.

8 Part 3: Uploading a zipped shapefile to the TNC Resilient Land Mapping Tool The Nature Conservancy has a data viewer that allows you to upload a zipped shape file, which will then calculate a number of useful statistics and create a map of the property with the resiliency data. This can all be done for free using MassGIS OLIVER tool and the TNC Resilient Lands tool. Step 1: OLIVER Turn off all datalayers except the parcels layer. Use the Identify Features tool to click on or draw a box over all the parcels of interest. In the Identify results window click on the Tax Parcels for Query results to see all of the parcels that were included. Make sure the parcels are the exact ones you want to include. Then click the here link in the Identify results window. Click Next on the window that opens. Next click the Tax Parcels for Query under the Selected data layers and click Next and then Next again.

9 Name your file and click Finish. Click Here in the Download exported data dialog box. The file will automatically save in your Downloads folder or wherever your default folder is for downloaded files.

10 Step2: TNC Resilient Land Mapping tool Navigate to the link: Click Accept and then click the Upload Zipped SHP button in the upper right hand corner. Navigate to the downloaded parcel information and click Open 1. Your parcel will appear very quickly but the tool will take a minute to open a report with the acres of resiliency and the resiliency score, as well as some helpful graphics which you can take a screen shot of or print to create a report. 1 Mac computers may automatically unzip the file. If that happens you will not see the file when you navigate to it via the Upload Zipped Shp button on the TNC Resilient Land Mapping tool. To fix this navigate to where the file is saved. Right click the file (if you don t have a mouse you can do this by holding down the Ctrl key and then clicking) then click Compress (your file name). After this is complete you should be able to navigate to the file via the Upload Zipped Shp button on the TNC Resilient Land Mapping tool.

11 Once that window is closed you can evaluate your data or export or print a map. You can take a screenshot or click the Print button in the upper right hand corner. You can enter a title for your map next to the Print button. The drop down arrow allows you to choose if the map is portrait or landscape.

12 If pop-ups are not allowed in your browser, make sure you allow them. A pdf of a finished map will open in a new window which you can download or print.
