Overview Queen Mary, University of London has deployed a distributed file system (DFS) Shared files and user data are stored on a SAN but the end user need not know the detailed structure of the service allowing reconfiguration without affecting what end users see.. Managed clients running the standard Windows 10 operating system will be able to access file services by drives mapped at login. People who choose to run other operating systems (e.g. Mac OS, Linux, unmanaged MS Windows)will have to manually mount their shared data and home drives on their clients This document details a standard procedure for mounting the Windows File Services shares on Mac OS, Ubuntu Linux and non-managed clients. Other versions of Linux are not detailed in this document, but users can search for their specific versions on the internet. This document does not deal with network firewall configuration or requirements. 2. Mac OS The following instructions are for connecting to a DFS namespace via SMB in OS X Lion (10.7) or later. There is no WINS server and we are using DNS only. Unfortunately the DFS referrals are using short names only and it is necessary to add the search domain that the servers are in. Before you start, please obtain your department and home drive share locations from the tables in section 5. Steps for Mounting Windows DFS Shares on Mac OS. Open Network Preferences Normally this is done by opening System Preference [Internet & Wireless] Network but you can open it using the Wi-Fi option on the top right of the menu bar Select Advanced 4

5 Select DNS Enter the search suffix: qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk 5

Click Ok to close Switch to the finder and Press Cmd + K to open the Connect to Server dialog box OR <Ctrl> click the finder icon and select Connect to Server Enter the home drive network

6 Click Ok to close Switch to the finder and Press Cmd + K to open the Connect to Server dialog box OR <Ctrl> click the finder icon and select Connect to Server Enter the home drive network share location in the following format: smb://qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk/fac/faculty/department/usr/username See example below: Enter your provided (Office 365) account credentials (domain unnecessary) 6

7 Optionally tick the Remember this password in my keychain and click Connect Now you will see your home drive To get departmental shared folders Press Cmd + K to open the Connect to Server dialog box Enter the shared drive location in the following format: smb://qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk/fac/faculty/department/shared See example below: 7

9 3. Linux (Ubuntu) Ensure that the following guidelines are followed when connecting to a DFS namespace via SMB in Ubuntu. Create subfolders under /mnt for the homedrive and departmental shares eg: /mnt/homedrive and /mnt/its Add qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk to your search domain list Install SMBFS and KeyUtils sudo apt-get install smbfs sudo apt-get install keyutils Ensure that you install original Samba package as it is also required to connect to a DFS tree on a Windows server. You will notice that smbfs will also install cifs-utils if it s not already installed. In the /etc/request-key.conf, change the following create cifs.spnego * * /usr/sbin/cifs.upcall -c %k To this: create cifs.spnego * * /usr/sbin/cifs.upcall -t %k Note: This file is created by the keyutils install. Restart Terminal Window Open a new Terminal window, and type the following: sudo mount t cifs //qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk/fac/prs/its/usr/username /mnt/homedrive/ -o username=username,workgroup=qm,rw,uid=$uid See example below: sudo mount -t cifs //qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk/fac/prs/its/usr/aaw489 /mnt/homedrive/ -o username=aaw489,workgroup=qm,rw,uid=$uid 9

10 Or, from Nautilus file browser, you can use Connect to Server from the File menu, and make these entries in the dialog window: Replace server name with qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk Share : FAC Folder : /Department/Sub_Department/USR/Username Eg: /PRS/ITS/USR/aaw489 Domain : QM Username : aaw489 To mount the departmental share, see below: Open a new Terminal window, and type the following: sudo mount -t cifs //qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk/fac/prs/its ITS/ -o username=aaw_username,workgroup=qm,rw,uid=$uid See example below: sudo mount -t cifs //qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk/fac/prs/its/usr/aaw489 /mnt/its/ -o username=aaw489,workgroup=qm,rw,uid=$uid 10

11 4. Non Managed Windows This section details how to map Windows File Services shared drives to a nonmanaged Windows client. It assumes that you have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed. Please obtain the correct paths from your administrator. Open Windows Explorer Right client Computer and select Map Network Drive Change the drive letter to G:\ Enter the path for your home drive. Tick Connect using different credentials. 11

12 Click Finish Enter your credentials and tick Remember my credentials Click Ok 12

13 Now you will see your home drive data Right client Computer and select Map Network Drive 13

14 Change the drive letter to J:\ Enter the path for your shared drive. Tick Connect using different credentials. Enter your password 14

16 5. Departmental share location The tables at departments and folders to be used when mapping drives. The three letter code in brackets should replace ABC and XYZ in this file path structure \\qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk\fac\abc\xyz\usr \\qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk\fac\abc\xyz\shared For example a user in School of Business and Management (BAM) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences should map the following drives: For home drive (map to G:); \\qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk\fac\hss\bam\usr For shared drives (map to J:); \\qm.ds.qmul.ac.uk\fac\hss\bam\shared 16
