1 KeyCreator Lesson KC8192 Engraving Text on a Cylindrical Surface In this exercise we ll create a tool path to engrave text on a cylindrical surface. Start with a new file in view 2. (The Front View.) Click on the CREATE RECTANGLE BY WIDTH HEIGHT Icon. Use the TopLeft Anchor Option. Type 5 for the Width and 0.5 for the Height. Using the KeyIn Option, position the rectangle at (X=0, Y= -0.25, Z=0.) Next, click on the CREATE LINE PARALLEL AT A DISTANCE Icon. Type 0.25 for the Distance. Click on the top edge of the rectangle and then just above it. Next, click on the line that you just made and then just above it. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 1
2 Click on the CREATE ARC BY THREE POSITIONS Icon. Using the EndEnt Option, click on the top, left corner of the rectangle. Next, using the CtrMid Option, click on the horizontal line just above the rectangle. Then, using the EndEnt Option, click on the top, right corner of the rectangle. Your screen should look like this: Delete the top of the rectangle and the horizontal line just above it. Switch to the Isometric View. Click on the CONSTRUCTION PLANE Icon and type 2 for the Construction Plane Number. Now, click on the XFORM DELTA JOIN Icon. Click on the top, horizontal line and hit the ENTER Key. Type 1 for the Number of Copies. Hit the ENTER Key twice, type 2.5 for the Z value and hit the ENTER Key. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 2
3 Next, click on the EXTRUDE Icon. A Dialog Box appears. Type 2.5 for the Length and hit the ENTER Key. Select the two sides and bottom from the original rectangle and the arc and hit the ENTER Key. Click on the rearward-facing vector. Your screen should look like this: Click on the CONSTRUCTION PLANE Icon. Then, type 1 for the construction plane number. Now, click on the CREATE A NOTE BY TYPING Icon. A Dialog Box appears. Type the word Curve for the text. Click on the Formatting Option and type 1 for the Text Height. Use the center anchor option and Center Justification. Hit the ENTER Key. Click on the TwoPos Option on the Conversation Bar. Then, using the CtrMid Option, click on the top edge and bottom edge of the rectangle. Your screen should look like this: KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 3
4 Click on the GENERIC BURST Icon. Select the text and hit the ENTER Key. Select the Text a second time and hit the ENTER Key. The text is now all geometry. Now, let s project the converted text to the cylindrical surface. Click on the PROJECT CURVES ONTO SURFACE Icon. A Dialog Box appears. Select the Skewed Projection Option and hit the ENTER Key. You are prompted to select a direction vector. Click on the 2 Points Option. Using the EndEnt Option, click on the front, left corner of the rectangle and then on the bottom, front, left corner of the solid block. Next, select the top curved surface of the block. Then, select all of the text geometry and hit the ENTER Key. You now have geometry mapped onto the surface that you can use to drive an engraving cutter. Click on the GEOMETRY TO TOOLPATH Icon. The Active Tool Dialog Box appears. Click on the Define Button in the bottom, left corner. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 4
5 A large Dialog Box appears. Type Engraver1 for the Tool Name. Select Mill for the Tool Type. (There is no Engraver Option in the Type list, so we use End Mill. Since we will be containing the centerpoint of the mill along the tool path this works fine.) Type 2 for the Tool Number and click to activate the Offset Numbers. Select the Flat End Mill Option and type 0.1 for the Diameter. Hit the ENTER Key. You are returned to the previous Dialog Box. Click on the DONE Button in the bottom, right corner. The Geometry to Tool Path Dialog Box appears. Type Engrave for the tool path description. Select the Retract Option. Click on the Multiple Steps in Z. Type 0.05 for the Final Depth and use 1 step. Then, hit the ENTER Key. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 5
6 Select all of the curves on the top surface of the block that represent text and hit the ENTER Key. You are prompted for a Pivot Point. Use the KeyIn Option and hit the ENTER Key three times to select the origin of the file. You will now have a tool path on the part. Click on the VERIFY TOOLPATH Icon. Move the cursor over the tool path and click when it highlights. Then, hit the ENTER Key. You are prompted for a Stock Definition Method. Click on the Corners Option. For the first corner, use the KeyIn Option and hit the ENTER Key Three times to select the origin of the file. Then, using the EndEnt Option, click on the bottom, rear, right corner of the solid. Click on the SKIP Button. The Meta Cut Utilities screen appears with your tool path. Click on the PLAY Icon. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 6
7 The simulation shows the engraving, subtracted from a prismatic bounding solid. The curved top surface of the actual solid is not represented so you have to imagine it. The cutter tip has, however followed the curvature of the top surface of the block exactly, so the engraving with an actual Vee Point will be uniform. KUBOTEK Freedom and Precision 7
