1 Tips & Techniques in Autodesk Inventor 2013/2014 PLTW - Wisconsin Dec. 10, 2013 Dan Banach Autodesk Inc. Dataset Instructors & students register for Free Autodesk software General and User Interface Projects Close all files before editing a project file Control where Inventor saves and opens file Marking menus Gesture behavior: right-click and drag toward command on the marking menu. Browser visibility Turn browser on: View tab > Windows panel > User Interface. Minimize Ribbon options Cycle through the minimize ribbon options by clicking the up arrow on the right side of the ribbon; click the down arrow to select an option. 1

2 Reset Ribbon Reset the ribbon to its original location and appearance by right-clicking in the browser Ribbon Appearance > Reset Ribbon. Extended feature name Browser > Filter icon > Show Extended Names. Part Modeling Draw ac in Line command While in the Line command, click and drag on the endpoint of the line and create an arc. Slot Commands In Inventor 2014, while in a sketch, there are five a slot commands: Sketch tab > Draw panel. Direct manipulation 1. Create a Sketch, draw a rectangle and finish the sketch. 2. Click on a sketch, edge or face and a mini-toolbar will appear. 2

3 Dynamically trim and extend sketch Trim.ipt Start the Trim or Extend command from the Sketch tab > Modify panel and then click and drag to trim or extend the geometry. Primitive shapes Use primitive shapes to create base or secondary features 3D Model tab > Primitive panel. New Part Section a part or assembly View tab > Appearance panel > Section commands. Create multiple holes from sketch geometry Plate.ipt 1. 2D Sketch Place multiple Center Points. 2. Share sketch place different size / type of holes based on points on a single sketch. 3. Create a sketch, sketch geometry or offset edges and place holes on the endpoints of the geometry. Sketch line tangent to two arcs / circles Line Tangent.ipt 1. Start the Line command; select one of the circles. 2. Press and hold down the Shift key and select the second arc or circle. Material and Appearance libraries From the Quick Access toolbar select the Material or Appearance. 3

4 Fillet Success Clamp 4.ipt When creating fillets with multiple edges and the fillet cannot be created on all the selected edges, a Create Fillet dialog box will appear stating how many edges will not be filleted. After accepting the edges to be filleted, the edges that were not filleted will not be in the selection set of the fillet feature. Assembly Place Component rotate and ground options Joint Assembly.iam When placing a component into an assembly you can now rotate the component about the X, Y or Z axis or ground the component on placement. While in the process of placing a component, rightclick before placing an occurrence and click an option from the marking menu. Joints Joint Assembly.iam The Joint command is similar to the assembly constraints command but Joint command fully defines how a component will move and rotate in a single operation. Depending upon the geometry that is selected, a joint type will be automatically selected, but you can override the default. The joints uses endpoints, midpoints and center points are used to locate the components. The Joint command can be used in conjunction with assembly constraints. 4

5 Copy and paste a part or assembly ANSI B _4-20 UNC - 1.ipt and Assembly.iam 1. Copy ANSI B _4-20 UNC - 1.ipt by right-clicking on ANSI B _4-20 UNC - 1.ipt in browser and click Copy from the menu. 2. In the Assembly.iam right-click and click Paste from the menu. Drag component from browser in the assembly Assembly.iam From browser click and drag ANSI B _4-20 UNC - 1:1 into graphics window. Move and rotate components Rotate Assembly.iam Use the Move and Rotate commands to move and rotate components that are or are not constrained. Constrained components will be reapplied when the assembly is updated. Constrain component with Alt Drag technique Assembly.iam From Browser, press and hold down the Alt key and select the inside circular face on the bolt and then select the circular edge on the hole. Constraint limits Assembly.iam 1. Apply a mate constraint between the Head Cover_Back:1 and Piston:1. 2. Edit the Mate constraint, click the more button>>. 3. Check the Maximum option and change its value to 35 mm. 4. Check the Minimum option and keep its value at 0 mm. 5

6 Angle Constraint Explicit Reference Vector Assembly.iam 1. Start the assembly Constraint command and click the Angle type. 2. First select part that does not move top horizontal plane of the Base. 3. Select part that will rotate top horizontal plane of the Head Cover_Front. 4. Define the angle direction (right hand rule) select a front vertical plane and enter 5 degrees. 5. Edit the angle constraint and click the third selections option and select a back vertical plane. Drawings Select overridden dimensions From the Quick Access toolbar click Priority settings > Select All Overridden Dimensions. Assembly.dwg Change base view s orientation Assembly.dwg 1. Double-click on the front view. 2. In the Drawing View dialog box click the Change view orientation button. 3. Use the Viewcube or another method to change the viewpoint. 4. From the Custom View tab > Exit panel > click the Finish Custom View command. Open part or assembly from within a drawing Assembly.dwg Right-click in a drawing view and click Open from the menu. Or In the browser expand a drawing view and right-click on a part or assembly file and click Open from the menu.
