Just got a Windows 10 machine??? This document will help. Java 1.8 Web Start (J2SE Runtime Environment 8.0) needs to be installed on the user s machine (Windows 7, 8, or 10) in order for the fully functional version of Coeus, Coeus Premium 4.5.1P2, to run. For Windows 10, in addition to having Java 1.8, you must also associate jnlp files with javaws in order for Coeus to launch. For step-by-step screenshots on how to do that, please see the File Association section below. No other software needs to be installed for Coeus to run. What software does Coeus Premium need to run on Mac? Which browser should I use to launch Coeus? Do the DeSC machines have Java 1.8? Same as for PC (above), but please see the Coeus Premium issues with Java 1.8, Mac only section for information on Coeus quirks on a Mac. If Coeus won t launch from one browser, try other browsers until it launches (Firefox, IE, Edge, Chrome). For example, I can t get Coeus to launch from Chrome, but others can. I use IE or Firefox for launching. Java 1.8 is part of the DeSC pushes for PC machines. However, the following could happen: Sometimes Java is installed and enabled, but something went wrong with the installation and it has to be uninstalled and reinstalled. Java could magically disappear from a user s machine, even though Coeus was working for several weeks without incident. We are aware that some Coeus users (including PIs and dept chairs who approve in Coeus) may not be working on a DeSC machine. 1

2 Can multiple Java versions exist at once? Where can my SCAD download the latest version of Java 1.8? If I am working remotely, do I need to VPN in to Coeus Premium in production? Yes, multiple versions of Java can be enabled on a user s machine without problems. If Java 1.8 is not on the user s machine, the departmental SCAD can download the latest version of java 1.8 from the Oracle website, install it, then reboot the machine. Not sure if your PC is 32 or 64 bit? Go to Control Panel > System > and look for System type. For 32 bit, use the download for x86. No, you do not need to VPN in to log on to Coeus Premium in production. As long as your machine has Java 1.8, you ll be able to run Coeus. Windows 10: Install Java 1.8 and set the.jnlp File Association In order for Coeus to launch on Windows 10, first install Java 1.8 and then set the file association for jnlp files to launch with javaws (Java web start launcher) as below. 1. Your departmental SCAD can download the latest version of Java 1.8 Web Start (J2SE Runtime Environment 8.0) from the Oracle website, install it, then reboot the machine. 2. Once Java is installed, you can do the rest yourself or ask your SCAD. The File Association needs to be set on Windows 10 so that jnlp files open with javaws (Java Web Start) instead of the Windows 10 default. Otherwise, Coeus will not launch. 5 If, after doing the above, Coeus still doesn t launch from one browser, try another browser just keep trying different browsers (Firefox, IE, Edge, Chrome). I have had trouble launch Coeus on Chrome, while others have not, but keep trying different browsers til it finally launches. Windows 10: Set Default Programs for narratives & PDF files to display in Coeus In order for Coeus narrative and other files (certifications, budget printouts, etc) to display, the default program has to be set so that Firefox is the default browser, the machine has to be rebooted, and then it will work. (You can also select IE as the default, but some depts. are no longer installing IE). There may be other methods that work but I know this method will work. Here are the step-by-step screenshots: (scroll down to the next page!) You can do this yourself, you don t need to ask your SCAD. Scroll down to the next page: 5

7 Please be sure to reboot your machine, then launch Coeus premium and try again. 7

8 Windows 10: The Coeus buttons and text are really tiny If your Coeus buttons and text are really tiny, try adjusting the screen resolution. You can do this yourself, you don t need to ask your SCAD. Scroll down if your laptop is connected to a monitor. 8

9 Coeus Premium issues with Java 1.8 and Windows or Mac When Coeus is saving or completing a task like submitting a proposal, usually a spinning circle appears to let you know that Coeus is working. However, with Java 1.8, there isn t always a spinning circle. Please be patient. 9

10 Coeus Premium issues with Java 1.8, Mac only There are 6 main issues, in addition to the one listed above. Issue Java 1.8 issue with Coeus Workaround Premium on Mac 1 Pressing the Rates button in the Coeus budget does nothing. Rates window does not appear. 2 The approval map is blank when the proposal is submitted the only button displayed is the Close button. 3 The approval map is blank when viewing submitted proposals--the only button displayed is the Close button. 4 Closing the narrative window or the budget screen returns you to the search results list instead of the last tab you were on before you opened the narrative or budget 5 The boxes are white instead of grayed out for submitted proposals. (This happened with older versions of Java too.) 6 Yosemite users running 1.8 update 40 will not be able to log on to Premium because they will not be able to type into the user name and password boxes If you need to change or view the OH rate, you can try CoeusLite on your Mac, use VMware Fusion or Boot Camp to run Windows on your Mac, or find a Windows machine. It s definitely weird! If you need to approve, reject or recall, you can either use CoeusLite or the other alternatives described above -OR- In Premium, click on the approval window where the approve / reject / recall buttons would normally be. Then the screen appears to allow you to approve / reject / recall. Either use Coeus Lite or the other alternatives described above -OR- In Premium, click on the approval window where approval map would normally be. You can see where the proposal is on the approval map, but you will not know when the proposal was approved at each point on the map. Click on the Window menu (in the very top bar) and then click on Proposal Details so that you can keep working on the rest of your proposal. Typically white boxes indicate that the proposal was opened in Edit mode. However, submitted proposals cannot be edited. Even though the boxes are white, you will not be able to type into them nor edit the proposal in any way. Possible workarounds include: - upgrade to Java 1.8 update 51 - downgrade the OS on the Mac to a pre-yosemite version; - run the application from a script installed on the Mac which executes the application with the 'nosplash' option 10

11 My Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working on my PC For PCs: You may want to stop using the icon completely and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. Many other applications, like Prime, do not have desktop icons. If you really want the icon to work again, you can try the steps below, but if the icon is not restored or repeatedly stops working, you will have to bid farewell to the desktop icon and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. 1. If the icon disappeared, go to step 2. Otherwise, if the old icon isn t working, delete the old icon (Right click on the icon, select Delete). 2. Close Coeus if you have it open. 3. Then press the Windows key on your keyboard and the letter r at the same time. The Run screen will open. 4. Cut and paste this into the Run menu, changing kburkhar to your user name (i.e. your NET ID). C:\Users\kburkhar\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache 5. Click OK and you will then see the a 6.0 folder labeled as Delete the 6.0 folder (Right click on the folder, select Delete). 7. Then go to the Coeus Home Page, click on the Launch Coeus Premium link and Coeus will put the icon back on the desktop, either automatically (without asking you) or by asking if you want to install the icon (click on yes). If this doesn t work, you will have to to bid farewell to the desktop icon and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. My Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working on my Mac For Macs: If your Coeus icon disappeared or no longer works, launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page so that you can continue working. To get your icon back or get your icon to work again, there are TWO things you can try. If you are running Mavericks or Yosemite, you will definitely have to try Option #2. If this doesn t work, you will have to to bid farewell to the desktop icon and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. 11

12 Thing to try #1: 1. If the icon disappeared, go to step 2. Otherwise, if the old icon isn t working, delete the old icon(s) from all places (your desktop and your dock). 2. Close Coeus if you have it open. 3. Then follow these instructions on the Java web page to delete your Java cache Then go to the Coeus Home Page, click on the Launch Coeus Premium link and Coeus will put the icon back on the desktop, either automatically (without asking you) or by asking if you want to install the icon (click on yes). If this doesn t work, you will have to to bid farewell to the desktop icon and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. Thing to try #2 (especially if you are running Mavericks or Yosemite): 1) Drag the broken Coeus icon from the Desktop, to the Trash can 2) Open your web browser of choice ( in this example, the choice is Firefox ) 3) Navigate to: 4) Click link to Launch Coeus Premium 5) Popup requesting how to handle the.jnlp file will likely appear: 6) Click Open 7) Click OK 8) Message appears: 12

13 9) Click OK 10) Launch System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General 11) Click Open Anyway to unblock OSX from launching coeus.jnlp 12) Coeus launches, icon appears on Desktop. If this doesn t work, you will have to to bid farewell to the desktop icon and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. 13

14 How to launch Coeus Production 1. If you don't have a Coeus icon on your desktop: From the Coeus Home Page, click on the Premium, Production version link to launch Coeus 4.5.1P2. 2. Click on Run or Yes or Allow to any warning messages you may see. a. Click on Open for messages that look like this: b. It s ok to say Yes, Ok, Run, or Allow to a message like this one in the screenshot below. There s a checkbox labeled Do not this again for apps from the publisher and location above. Check it if you don t want to see the warning again until the next upgrade. 3. The logon screen should appear. Enter your LDAP user name and password (the same password you use for checking your and logging onto your workstation). 4. If the program asks you to if you want to install a desktop icon, click on yes. However, it may not ask you it might just install the icon on the desktop without any prompting from you. 5. If the icon does not appear on the desktop, follow the instructions in the My Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working how do I get it back? section above. If this doesn t work, you will have to to bid farewell to the desktop icon and launch Coeus from the Launch Coeus Premium link on the Coeus Home Page. How to launch Coeus TRAIN Users can have both the production version of Coeus on their desktop and the training version, called Coeus TRAIN. To install TRAIN on the desktop, go to the Launch Coeus Training page and click on the Launch Coeus Premium, Training version link. Coeus will either ask you if you want to install the icon on the desktop, or it will install the icon automatically. If neither of those scenarios occur, then refer to the My Coeus icon disappeared or stopped working how do I get it back? section below. 14
