2 We can customize the functionality of the buttons. We have three button. Start with Java Web Start, Start with HOBLaunch, and Install HOBLaunch. In addition we have two switches named, Automatically start your sessions, and Enable your sessions to use HOBLaunch? Java Web Start The Java Web Start button will launch our HOBLink JWT session using Java Web Start technology. Java Web Start must now be used in most situations because most Web Browser vendors have removed support for the Java Plugin which would automatically start Java Applications. Internet Explorer still support this feature for the time being. Java Applications will no longer run automatically for the user, which is inconvenient for the user. The user must click the button to launch the HOBLink JWT session using Java Web Start, the user then downloads a.jnlp file which must then be started manually. This complicates things for some users. Luckily there is another option which will be discussed below called HOBLaunch. There are a few things to note about Java Web Start before we go on. First, at the time of this writing, Java Web Start has moved to the deprecated phase in Oracle Java s development meaning that this functionality can be removed in the future. Second, Apple Gatekeeper will cause problems for Mac OS users. This is due to the fact that Apple Gatekeeper will block by default.jnlp files which are not properly signed. HOBLink JWT dynamically creates the.jnlp files when the user click to start the HOBLink JWT session using Java Web Start, even though we went through all the trouble of importing a Code Signing certificate into the device, the created JNLP files themselves are not properly signed. This results in Apple s Gatekeeper blocking the JNLP files. User can easily get around this by going into their downloads folder and two finger clicking on the JNLP file and select run, or two finger clicking, select Open with and then Java Web Start.app. Window user should not have a problem running these Java Web Start applications. Even though the user has to install this HOBLaunch helper program and set a switch, the user can get an experience very similar to what they had with the Java plugin. HOBLaunch is will be the primary way to launch java applications when Oracles officially removes Java Web Start functionality from Oracle s Java.
