Technology Vision AISC Technology and Information Literacy Vision IT and Library Services will collaborate with and empower students and staff to transform curiosity, creativity and compassion into ideas or artifacts with personal, social, or global significance. Our use of technology must not: Act as the primary driver of curriculum and instruction. Erode creative and social freedom that students may already enjoy. Replace the teacher as lead learner and influencer in the classroom. Purpose The transition to digital forms of learning, work, and leisure is profoundly impacting the nature of education and the future of work. A gap has emerged between the need for our students to learn and apply information literacy, digital citizenship, and related digital-age skills and our ability to meet this need in the classroom. Outside of school our children can access a digital world of communication, creativity, inquiry and collaboration that educators find increasingly difficult to support with a laptop cart and computer lab model. Seven Criteria for a Successful 1-to-1 Program All students and staff will have ubiquitous and unobstructed access to the information technology tools necessary for learning and use them frequently. Teaching and learning has been augmented and ultimately transformed in support of our student learning objectives. More intense investment and engagement are achieved on the part of the student. Closer, more relevant, repeatable, and authentic interaction with content have been achieved. Students are transported to places, experiences, perspectives, cultures, and people otherwise difficult to reach. Essential teacher-student interactions that drive both human and academic growth have been empowered and enabled, not replaced or reduced. All students demonstrate digital citizenship skills to conduct themselves ethically and securely with digital communication tools. 2

Plan AISC is heading into its second year of a 1-to- 1 Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) personal computing initiative for students. BYOT is a form of collaboration between home and school where families supply each child with a device that best meets his or her own learning needs and the school provides a high-speed wireless network, worldclass software tools, and complementary devices for checkout. The program will be entering its second phase in the school year, in which all students in grades 5-12 will be required to participate while students in grades 3-4 will have the option of bringing in their own device. Timeline for Adoption Phase one Phase two All students grades 6-10 will be required to bring their own technology (BYOT) to school every day. 2. Grade 5, 11, & 12 students will participate in an optional BYOT program that will be augmented with schoolowned laptops in carts. 3. Grade students will continue to participate in an optional BYOT program. 4. Grades 3-4 classrooms will have increased access to school-owned devices. 1. All students in grades 5-12 will be required to bring their own technology (BYOT) to school every day. 2. Grades 3-4 classrooms will have access to school-owned devices and can participate in an optional limited BYOT program. 3. Computer checkout and high-end labs will remain to support specialized use of software under specific circumstances. 3

Configuration Workshops Once families collect their devices, they can engage support specialists for help unpacking and setting them up. Families may need help applying security software, parental controls, and downloading all the suggested and required software. BYOT Device Options Based on recommendations from successful case studies in other schools, it is highly recommended that students are offered a range of options for devices that support the school s learning outcomes. The device parameters for each section are as follows: 1. Grade 5-8 Bring a laptop from a set of approved specifications or an ipad with a keyboard. **Note to Parents of Grade 8 Students The current recommendation for High School devices is that a laptop is required to meet the productivity and creativity demands of the Grade 9-12 curriculum. The list of approved devices will be subject to reevaluation on a yearly basis at each section level. However, please note that an ipad purchased in Grade 8 may or may not be on the list of approved devices in Grade 9. At a minimum, students will need to bring a device that meets the demands of the school day and the tools used for document management, productivity, and communication. Key factors to consider are battery life, screen size, weight and performance. 5

FAQ Overview What is the objective of a 1-to-1 computing program? The primary objective is to support, enable and enhance high-quality teaching, learning, and administration in support of our school mission, strategic objectives and student learning objectives. What does Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) mean? Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) is a supplementary school technology resourcing model, where the home and the school collaborate in arranging for students use of their own digital technologies to be extended into the classroom. Devices Does the school recommend the specifications of the devices to be bought? Yes, a set of parameters, along with a list of recommended devices, is provided to ensure families purchase devices compatible with classroom learning. The school offers logistical assistance in the purchasing of devices to provide bulk-rate prices and facilitate decision-making. Why isn t the school recommending Android devices? Android makes a highly competitive operating system that is gaining in popularity, however, due to the lack of familiarity with the Android OS at AISC, using such a platform would put students at a disadvantage. Who will pay for the devices and will the school offer assistance? In a Bring-Your-Own-Technology model, parents pay for student devices or simply allow them to bring in a compatible device that they currently own. It is possible to include the cost of the device from a list of specific devices into school fees for Please see your school fee letter for more information. Can students checkout a device from school that they can take home? Students cannot check out a device to take home, however, they can checkout a device for use at school. They do have the option to lease a device that they can take home for a reasonable fee from our partner vendor, Tekflair. How many devices can students bring? Students can bring in two devices to be used on the school Internet. This means that they could bring, for example, a laptop computer and an ipad or a laptop computer and a smartphone. Students will need to register their primary device with the IT Office and can connect their secondary device to our guest access network. 1-to-1 Learning How do students access school software on their personal devices? Does the school sell licenses for software? Nearly all of the applications or services that students are required to use are cloud-based and accessible anywhere with an Internet connection. Some software will need to be downloaded and installed, however, we recommend both free and paid versions that will meet students varying needs. Students with ipads will need to purchase apps using a personal itunes account if a free app does not meet students needs. How is expensive, specialized software provided? Some classes or projects may demand more specialized software that cannot be installed on all student machines all the time. In most instances, we will be able to provide a laptop with the necessary software installed through our individual checkout system. We will also continue to provide specialized labs in the High School. 8

Will textbooks and other print resources be replaced by the device? Due to the fact that not all textbooks are available in a digital version and to accommodate various learning styles, textbooks will not be completely replaced. Teachers will, however, be encouraged to supplement their courses with digital texts of all kinds to further enhance content accessibility to all students. Will students increased use of digital media at home and school negatively impact their academic performance? Digital media is one of the most important learning tools our students use. Teaching them how to manage their screen time and how to become critical consumers and creators of media is essential. By focusing on digital citizenship, information literacy, and real human interaction, we can ensure that digital media in the classroom will have a positive impact on student learning. Is more computer time at school good for student learning? Schools have an obligation to help students combine their digital and face-to-face lives in creative, productive ways. Students live and learn in a technologically-rich world outside the classroom and one-to-one is simply an acknowledgment of that reality. At a minimum, device access should not be a constraint to student learning in school. At its best, students will use their devices in meaningful ways to significantly enhance their learning and expression. What will happen to the offline skills when students advance their use of digital devices in creative ways? We continue to support a balance between analog and digital modes of work and learning much in the way that we would differentiate for learning styles and strengths. Both handwriting and keyboarding should continue to be taught from an early age as both are currently useful communication skills to acquire. What classes can students use their devices in? Students may use their devices in any class where the teacher has identified a use for them or has granted permission. Some teachers may allow devices to be used at the students own discretion while managing the class in such a way that devices are off when not needed. Responsible Use How do we ensure students remain cybersafe in and out of the classroom? Digital citizenship forms the core of the worldclass technology curriculum we are integrating into classrooms to support our 1-to-1 learning initiative and to address the demands of personal mobile devices in and out of the classroom. A related curriculum is currently offered to parents to make the home-school connection. Who decides when devices are used in classrooms? Most of these parameters are currently in place at the section level through their respective Responsible Use policies. Within this structure, teachers retain the power to determine when and where devices are to be used for specific activities. How do students ensure their devices are charged when they need them? The minimum specification for battery life of a device is 3+ hours (4+ recommended). Under most circumstances a fully charged computer lasts a school day without need of charging. However, in the event that a laptop was not fully charged at the start of the day, or under extended use, classrooms offer ample opportunities to plug-in and charge while in use. How do students manage their passwords? Passwords are generated by each individual student. Students will be taught how to create strong passwords. Homeroom teachers and technology integrators do not have access to student passwords, however, they can reset them at any time. The same password will be used for their Google accounts and Moodle page. 9

How may students use devices during free times? Specific guidelines for laptop use during breaks, lunch, and other free time can be found in the sectional student handbooks. How do students keep devices safe from loss or theft? Students use the physical security available to them such as, locks on lockers and keeping devices with them or in line-of-sight. We also provide safe zones where students can leave their devices under CCTV surveillance. IT can help you configure your device with anti-theft software that will help you or the police locate it in the unfortunate event of loss or theft. IT Support and Services What happens in the event of laptop damage or malfunction? Other devices are available at the school for checkout in the event that a student s personal device malfunctions. The IT department will attempt to resolve any software malfunction to the extent of its abilities. Our 3rd party vendor, Tekflair, will handle any service that requires physical repair. Repairs that are not under warranty will be handled on-site, while devices under warranty will be sent to the nearest service center. All physical damage to device is the responsibility of the owner and may be covered by warranty or maintenance contract. What if students forget devices at home? In this uncommon circumstance the IT department can check out a device to the student for the day. Students will be responsible for accessing their work stored on the Internet in Google Drive and may not take the device home. Can students print from their computers? Primarily, students will need to carefully consider the need to print. In the event that a printout is required, students can print to our network printers from any device. Printing in color will be closely regulated and will require a visit to the Library. This will allow the school to keep cost and waste under control. How are student devices monitored? We do not monitor student laptops. We do, however, keep a log of Internet traffic through our firewall that registers the browsing activity of all users while on the AISC campus Internet. All AISC Responsible Use Policy guidelines will apply to misuse of the Internet or the school network. If excessive or inappropriate use is detected the student will be placed on a watch list, and the student, his or her teachers, and the section principal will be notified. What kind of support does AISC provide? AISC tech support and integration personnel will continue to teach students to learn how use their devices productively and safely. Should my child have administrator rights on their devices? It is ideal for parents and teachers to work together to help students learn to manage their devices wisely. It is helpful if students are able to install software or apps on their devices. Parents can, however, choose to add user or parental control systems to limit the installation of software and/or access to categories of websites. The IT department can assist parents in setting up these controls. 10
