2 Learning objectives 1. To present a multiplatform application that is starting to be widely used to improve both personal and professional productivity. 2. Describe the uses that can be applied to Radiology in a personal and collective level. Background Evernote is a multiplatform application intended for the organization of personal information in notes. Evernote is available for mobile platforms ios (iphone and ipad), Android, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry, as well as downloadable application on our Windows or Mac computer, in addition to a website from where we can access to our information from any computer (Fig. 1). This allows to have all our information synchronized, available and accessible from home, work or anywhere if we are using a smartphone. Evernote has a free and a paid (premium) version. The free version allows an extensive use of the application, but it has a more restricted usage and is advertising-supported. It is enough for starting to use it or for a domestic use. The premium version offers bigger upload capacity, storage of PDF and audio notes, share books and allows you to search "words" within PDF and JPEG notes among other advantages. In general, this version brings tangible benefits in the professional and more exhaustive-use environment. Page 2 of 24

5 Imaging findings OR Procedure details EVERNOTE BENEFITS OFFERED ON OTHER INFORMATION STORAGE SYSTEMS - Multiplatform: Lets have our information available to use, share and store from anywhere with your smartphone or from any computer connected to the Internet. It is one of the great advantages offered by this application. - Easy to use. - Customizable: This feature allows us to use both personally and professionally, in this case with specific applications tailored to our work as radiologists. You can create a personal account or a corporative account with books and other materials dedicated to our professional area. These materials can then share with other users. The username and password you choose this time will allow to you access your Evernote account in the future. - Download the Evernote application desktop on your Windows or Mac computer. This will make even easier the Evernote usage, storage and searching from our computer at home or work. - Download the free app on your smartphone and/or tablet. - Web clipping support is installed by default on the Internet Explorer and Safari browsers when the Evernote software is installed under Windows or Mac OS X. Evernote webclipping plugins are also available for the Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome browsers, but need to be downloaded and installed separately. The Evernote -clipper is Page 7 of 24

8 automatically installed in Microsoft Office Outlook if the desktop version is installed on the same computer. Evernote lets you save a complete web page, a selection of specific content or the URL. - You can also link a Twitter account with Evernote to save tweets. 9 Fig. 4 References: RADIODIAGNÓSTICO, COMPLEJO HOSPITALARIO UNIVERSITARIO DE ALBACETE - Albacete/ES How to create a NOTE? - The easiest way to create a simple text note is writing, but can be done with cutting and pasting from any text we have in the clipboard (right-click or Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V). - From our web clippers: It is easy create notes from websites we are visiting and save selected text, images, entire websites or keep only the URL. When we want to store information (text, images, full page) in Evernote, just go to the button of the browser bar. This opens a dialog box where you can put the note title (though will be the name of the web by default) and choose the notebook where you want to save, and tags you want to use in order to facilitate posterior searches. - By Each Evernote account has assigned an address you should keep in your address book. So you can easily create notes while browsing from your phone using the "send link" or save s directly into Evernote. - From Twitter as seen above. NOTEBOOK: A notepad for notes (Fig. 5). You can make groups or stacks of notebooks. For example: a stack of notebooks called ABDOMINAL PAPERS, and within it, different notebooks that we can name by organs: liver, kidney, rectum...or techniques: US, CT, MR, Each PDF or URL paper will be kept as a NOTE. As we haven seen above, it is customizable according our preferences or our areas of interest. Page 9 of 24

Each note can have all the tags you want. In the example above, we could tag items as: ECR exhibit, MR, Oncology, review,... Page 10 of 24

Therefore, you only should remember one simple word mentioned in the note that you are looking for, and Evernote will search the entire database and filter out all the notes containing that word. In the paid version also searches printed or handwritten words within PDF and images (Fig. 7) - e.g. name recognition in photos of business cards -. SYNC: The process by which the notes of Evernote are updated in the website, and all your computers, phones and mobile devices. Page 11 of 24

12 Fig. 7 References: RADIODIAGNÓSTICO, COMPLEJO HOSPITALARIO UNIVERSITARIO DE ALBACETE - Albacete/ES EVERNOTE USES APPLIED TO RADIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENT (and those who want to add, the limit is your imagination). - ORGANIZE PRESENTATIONS, EXHIBITS, ORAL COMMUNICATIONS, PAPERS, Evernote can be used to store and organize information, ideas, images, references, web resources, etc., required when you are preparing a paper, lecture, etc.. This can also include audio notes created by you. This post (in Spanish) will you provide some insights. Example: We created a notebook called "Evernote ECR exhibit" in a stack of notebooks called "My scientific publications". Here we kept all the notes that have been collected Page 12 of 24

13 among these months related to this issue. This way, it was easier to access the information. Moreover, the authors of the poster could share and modify the notes in this notebook from our personal accounts of Evernote, regardless of which account has been created it. - ORGANIZE OUR "WEB RESOURCE" LIBRARY We continue with the previous example: a stack of notebooks called ABDOMINAL PAPERS, and within it, different notebooks named by organs: liver, kidney, rectum...or techniques: US, CT, MR,. Notes can be links to your favorite websites, lectures, online exhibits or cases, PDF papers, word documents, diagrams, pictures,... - SHARE INFORMATION WITH THE REST OF THE DEPARTMENT (SCHEDULES, MEETINGS, CLINICAL SESSIONS AND COMMITEES,...) You can create documents (notes) that an specific group of people can see (and if you choose, modify) in shared notebooks. This is useful for the internal organization of the Department and communication between multidisciplinary workgroups. - ANONYMIZED IMAGING DATABASE - MANY USES AS YOU CAN IMAGINE...
