If you are looking for information regarding property ownership, mailing addresses, acreage, property addresses, location, year built, square footage, valuation, flood plain, rural zoning, GPS location, and a host of other information, you have come to the right place. Our website allows you to search for a location in a number of different ways, and cross links to the Appraiser s Office, the Treasurer s Office and the Register of Deeds. WHAT S NEW ON THE WEBSITE? Butler County Facilities Story Map: Go to to try out our brand new Butler County Facilities Story Map. Do you ever wonder where some of our facilities are? Have you tried to find the location of our Health Department, Noxious Weeds Department, etc? We now have a website which will not only show you what our facilities are, but also which departments are located there, hyperlinks to each of their departments for more information, and a map to show you exactly where they are located. Fast and easy access to ownership information Cross linked to Appraiser s, Treasurer s and Register of Deeds information. Works on Mobile Devices! Downloadable ESRI shapefile maps and Subdivision Plats: See page 7 for more information on what s available and how to access it. 1

They have the same information, but you will find additional functionality on the desktop version. Once you accept with the DESKTOP or MOBILE version, the website will open.

You may always select the House tool to take you back out to the fullcounty location.

2 Page 2 Volume 1, Issue 10 H OW TO U SE BU TLER COUNTY GIS M A P S ON THE WEB Our desktop and mobile websites may be found at You may go to the Mapping/GIS Department, or select Search Properties under the I WANT TO drop down found at the top of the page. From there you may ACCEPT either the desktop or the mobile version. They have the same information, but you will find additional functionality on the desktop version. Once you accept with the DESKTOP or MOBILE version, the website will open. The first time you open it, you will be at the full county level. From that point on, it will open where you last closed it out. It will remember your location. You may always select the House tool to take you back out to the fullcounty location. There is an option to respond to a short survey in both locations to let us know what you like, or do not like about this website. It is our goal to make it as userfriendly and helpful as we can. Recently we have added the Floodplain information, and our next task is to add the county Zoning information. If there are other layers of information you would find helpful, just let us know on the survey so we can track your requests. H OW TO S E A R C H BY A D D R E S S Let us know how we are doing! Respond to our short survey, or bucogis@bucoks.com! Searching by address is easy on our new website. You will find a search box on the top toolbar of either website. This box is where you would enter an address including the city and state. An example would be: 205 W Central, El Dorado, KS. As you are typing, it will be looking for your address and giving you recommendations that you may select from, or simply hit enter or the magnifying glass when you have the address entered. This should zoom you to a very close location to the address and turn on some of the additional layers of information. You may have to zoom back out a little to see your entire property with the aerial. To zoom in or out, you can use your mouse roller -ball, or the +/- tools. L O O K I N G F O R O W N E R, I N F O, T A X A M O U N T S? If you are looking for who owns a property, their contact information, more specific information about the property, deed information, or tax amounts; they can be found easily on our website. When you get zoomed into an area, or a specific property you will be able to tap or click on a property and a pop-up box will open providing you with the square footage, acreage, owner, mailing address, tract descrip- tion, property address, recent deed book and page numbers, as well as primary classification. You will also see a WEB- LINK that say s More Info. If you tap/click on this link, it will take you over to the Appraiser s portion of the website and provide you with additional information, as well as links to the Treasurer s Office and Register of Deeds. 2

GIS/Maps on the WEB Page 3 H OW TO S EA RCH BY NAME Searching by name is only available in the Desktop version of our website. It is easy to use. Find the Funnel shaped tool on the top tool bar.

These options allow you to narrow down your search to an area or a specific property. To search by Owner s Name, click on that option. This opens a box where you may type in an owner s name.

3 GIS/Maps on the WEB Page 3 H OW TO S EA RCH BY NAME Searching by name is only available in the Desktop version of our website. It is easy to use. Find the Funnel shaped tool on the top tool bar. When you select this tools, additional search options open up. You may now search by PID (Parcel Identification Number), Owner s Name, QuickRef Number, Section-Township- Range, or Political Township. These options allow you to narrow down your search to an area or a specific property. To search by Owner s Name, click on that option. This opens a box where you may type in an owner s name. You want to enter it last name first. Last name may be all it takes, if it is an unusual name. If you need to narrow it down further, enter last name, then first initial with a comma and space. Here is an example: Jones, T then you would hit APPLY in the top right hand corner of the box. Enter does not work here, you have to use the APPLY button. With this example, it returned 4 results. You are then able to scroll down through them, or click on them to zoom to each of them on the map to determine which one s you are looking for. If you received no results, or too many results, you will just want to click on OP- TIONS to go back and adjust what you entered either adding more of the first name, or removing the first initial. They are in our system as they are listed on their deeds. W H A T L AY E R S A R E AVA I L A B L E? We have set certain layers to come on and off as you work with our website. However, there are a number of additional layers available. If you click on the Layers tool on the tool bar, it will open up a Layer List. This is what the Layers tool looks like. The Layer List will have a list of options that you can turn on or off by checking the box. If the layer is grayed out, it just means that at this scale, it is not available. If you zoom in further on your map it will become available for viewing. As new layers become available, you will find them in this list. For instance, we have added a 2015 Aerial to the list that you can turn on to see if there have been any changes to the property. It is not our default, as the quality of the photo is not as clear as the 2013 aerials. Keep an eye on the Layers list, we will be adding new information here as it becomes available! H OW TO M E A S U R E D I S T A N C E OR A C R E A G E Using the measure tool is easy. You have the option to measure an area or distance, as well as determining the GPS location of a point. To measure, select the Measurement tool from the toolbar. By selecting this tool, a Measurement box will open up and you will see three tools listed. The first tool is for area, and when selected, a drop-down will appear, defaulted on Acres. This can be changed with the arrow. If you want to measure an area in acres, you are ready to begin measuring on your map. You would click on the map outlining the area and double click to finish. It will provide you the result in the pop-up box. The second option is distance. When selected, it defaults in Feet, but you have the option to change this as well. To measure, just click on the map and double-click to tell it you are finished. Your result will be in the pop-up also. The third option is a GPS location of a point on the map in Latitude and Longitude. 3

We are working on an alternative to this, but currently it will work with that additional information. So, in the address search box, you would type in the intersection..ex.

4 GIS/Maps on the WEB Page 4 H OW TO LOOK UP A LOCAT I O N BY AN I N T ERSECTION This is a feature that we ve always wanted to have on our website, and now it works. There is only one catch, you have to enter the city state of the intersection. I understand that this is not always known. If you guess by the closet city, you can usually get it to work. We are working on an alternative to this, but currently it will work with that additional information. So, in the address search box, you would type in the intersection..ex. SW Boyer Rd & SW 90th Augusta KS and hit enter. You do not always have to have the prefix or suffix, and you do not have to have the zip code. If there is an intersection at what you have identified, it will zoom you right to it and identify it with the Search Result box. I always go ahead and close this out. You are now able to identify properties, turn on and off layers as needed. H OW TO L O O K UP A LOCATION BY L ATITUDE & L O NGITUDE The measure tool will provide you with the Latitude & Longitude for a location, but sometimes you have a Latitude & Longitude that you need to lookup to determine its location. You can now type this in the search box at the top of page..ex and hit enter. They can be separated by a space or a comma. It will zoom to the location. Keep an eye on the Layers list, we will be adding new information here as it becomes available! H OW TO C L I C K AND DRAG A BOX Z O O M IN L I K E THE OLD WEBSI TE I ve had many requests to be able to click and drag a box to zoom into an area on the map without using the roller ball, the zoom in tools or searching by address. This can be done. Just hold down your SHIFT key and click and drag an area on the map. This area will outline in red. When you release your mouse, it will zoom your map to the area you boxed in. 4

This information is coming directly from FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) database. They are continually adding and updating their information.

5 Page 5 Volume 1, Issue 10 FLOOD MAPS Let us know how we are doing! Respond to our short survey, or bucogis@bucoks.com! The FEMA National Flood Hazard layer is also available on our website. You now zoom to an area or property and under the Layer s List, you will be able to turn on the floodplain layer. This information is coming directly from FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) database. They are continually adding and updating their information. There is a small arrow to the left of the layer in the layer list that you can click on to open up the entire list of what information is available from FE- MA. Their information includes such data as the Flood Hazard Zones, Cross-sections, Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) panel numbers, the (LOMR-Fs) or Letters of Map Revision Based on Fill and the (LOMA) or Letters of Map Amendments. For additional information regarding the ability to build in Butler County and whether the location is in the floodplain and what your options are, you would want to contact the Community Development department at (316) If you are looking for a legend to help determine what the symbols mean, just click the small arrow to the left of the National Flood Hazard Layer in the layers list, then scroll down the list and click on the arrow to the left of Flood Hazard Boundaries to open up the symbol key for this layer. See example to the left here. 5

One of our very own employees came up with the idea because they found that a number of questions come up on a daily basis. These are all questions that we were not aware of until we began working in the GIS/Mapping Department. So, if by sharing a small tidbit of information helps you either in your career or personal life we have done our job. Feel free to contact our department for more in depth information regarding any of these posts. Keep an eye on the our website, we will be adding new information here as it becomes available! 6

7 Page 7 Volume 1, Issue 10 DOWNLOADABLE MAP BOOKS, ESRI SHAPEFILES & SUBDIVISION PLATS You now have the option to download county-wide ESRI Shapefiles and Subdivision Plats. You will find these at on the Mapping/GIS Department under Downloadable Maps. On the left hand column you have the option of Map Books, Subdivision Plats and ESRI Shapefiles for Download. Let s start with Map Books: Let us know how we are doing! Respond to our short survey, or bucogis@bucoks.com! Butler County GIS prepares and maintains a list of all streets and maps of their location in Butler County. This book is typically utilized for emergency response or routing as a hard copy back up for when digital information is not available. Some small streets are not listed on Google Maps and in an emergency it is crucial to be able to locate them fast. Our dispatcher s utilize the page numbers in CAD and are able to quickly distribute this information out to our emergency responders if necessary. Next, let s cover ESRI Shapefiles: In this section, you currently have the option to download Property Ownership Boundaries, Parcel/Lot Lines and Street Centerline data. All shapefiles are county-wide data and are projected in Stateplane, FIPS 1502 (Kansas South), US Survey Feet and NAD83 Datum. This data is updated weekly. When you Click to Download your selection, it will prompt you to OPEN or SAVE. These are zipped files so you must SAVE them and then unzip or extract them to access the shapefile. Please note that shapefiles are made up of many files that when accessed with GIS it sees them as one shapefile. You are not able to open them individually. And finally, let s cover Subdivision Plats: All subdivision plats that have been recorded in Butler County are available here for download in.tif format along with what we call their showings (if they have some). Showings are any documents that have been recorded that affect the plat or information on the plat. An example might be a scriveners error or a street vacation. To be sure you are looking at the correct information, it s a good idea to review the showings list. 7

8 Page 8 Volume 1, Issue 10 C O M M I S S I O N D I S T R I C T S! If you are trying to determine who your commissioner is, we ve now made it easy. If you are looking for the commissioner for a specific address; you will type the address in the search box including the city state and press enter or the magnifying glass to search. It will locate the address and zoom to it. Close the Search result box and just like with all the other information or layers we ve added you will find the commission district layer under the LAYERS tool located on the top tool bar of the website. From here, you will find the Commission Districts about 3/4 of the way down the list. Just checkmark it on, and it will tell you the District # and the commissioners name. School District Boundaries The latest addition to our website is the Butler County School District layer. You will find access to it under the LAYERS tool on the tool bar which looks like a stack of papers. It is a layer that you would manually turn on, and labels and district lines will appear. You will find the School District boundaries, as well as the member district boundaries (if applicable) and as you zoom in on school locations, you will see the school name. Rural Zoning Districts We have added the Butler County Rural Zoning District layers to our website. You can now zoom to an area or property in the rural area, and you will be able to turn on the Rural Zoning Districts. This information is updated monthly and contains the Zoning District, the Conditional Use Permits (CUP), the Agricultural Preservation Overlays (APO), and identifies the Urban Growth Boundary and Platting Jurisdiction Boundary. There is a small arrow to the left of the layer in the layer list that you can click on to open up the legend or by clicking on the property itself, a pop-up box will appear and you will see (1 of 2) or more at the top. The first one will be ownership information, if you use the small arrow to the right of (1 of 2), it will take you to (2 of 2) and it will provide the Zoning Information. For additional information regarding the districts or the ability to split or build, you will want to contact the Community Development Department at (316)

We have created a lighter-weight mobile version as we have had some issues with some of the Android devices not working in landscape mode. The IPhone seems to work with either the desktop or mobile version. So far, we have had no complaints that the mobile version does not work on all mobile devices. The maps are the same in both the desktop and mobile website. However, there is additional search capability in the desktop version. In both versions, you will find aerials, property ownership, ownership, dimensions, acreage, and tools for measuring and printing. P R I N T I N G TIPS & T R I C K S Let us know how we are doing! Respond to our short survey, or bucogis@bucoks.com! The printing functionality is improved with this website, and is super easy to use. Just select the Print tool and a box will open up and you can simply hit Print. It will create a pdf map for you. You are then able to click on the map you created and you will then have the option to print it, or save it to your computer for future use or to attach to an . As with any other software, you have some options to improve your print. You may change the Map Title: to a more descriptive title such as an address or name. Under Layout: you can select Landscape or Portrait (any of the options, each is slightly different) and this will automatically add a legend as well. If you hit print again, this will create another pdf under item # 2. You can open it to see the differences. You have some options under the Format dropdown to change from a pdf to other formats such as jpg, etc. Under the Advanced tab, I would recommend changing it from Map Scale to Map Extent. Map Extent preserves what you had on the screen and prints it on the paper. The default of Map Scale will preserve the scale you set your screen and cut off anything outside of that map scale on your print. With adding a title, changing it to A3 Landscape, and making it Map Extent instead of Map Scale your map goes from this to this.. 9
