1 Bing for Microsoft Surface The Sustain Engineer s Guide The Bing for Microsoft Surface was developed in collaboration with Stimulant and the Bing maps team. We, Microsoft, owns the right to any intellectual property that Stimulant created as part of the contract, including the documents referenced in this document (Even if they are branded with the Stimulant logo). The main purpose of the Bing application is to show partners and those purchasing Microsoft Surface hardware some of the characteristics of Microsoft Surface. The Bing application ships with all Microsoft Surface Hardware, and will be preinstalled as part of the OEM installation. Administrator s experience We created an Administrator s Guide to explain Administrators how to customize and configure the Bing application. The Interaction Design Specification explains the controls in some more detail. Please utilize those two documents for reference. End-user s experience The Bing application can be launched from the Microsoft Surface Shell, or from: Start Menu > Bing for Microsoft Surface. Upon launch a Single Bing Toolbar will be shown on the screen, and it is manipulatable. The Bing toolbar allows the user to enter a search term, and select a type of search (Maps or Images). Upon entering the search term either by using the virtual or physical keyboard, the user can press Enter on the physical keyboard or tap the magnifying glass icon to initiate a search. This will cause a cluster of images or a map to appear on the screen, depending on the type of search requested. At this point the textbox in the Bing toolbar will be cleared to allow the user to initiate other searches. A maximum of four searches can happen at the same time; at that point, the textbox will be disabled as shown below:

2 Image Search An example of image searches for Rome. The final visuals are shown on the screen. The functionality of the buttons from left to right are: toggle of cluster/ stack view, previous, next and close. In the image above, one of the images (the one with the four dots) is still loading, and showing a progress animation. The interaction design document for Image Search is included with this document. Note that even though the visuals are not accurate, the functionality is fully described in the interaction design document. The interaction design document for Image Search also explains the relationship between the toolbar location and the location of the virtual keyboard. One part that changed from that document is the removal of the refresh results button. The next and previous buttons are used instead. Also, we combined the cluster view and stack view buttons into a single toggle button that allows you to change the view of the pictures. Also, we did not implement the transition storyboards or the resizing of stacks as explained in that document. Map Search A search for a location like India would cause a map like the one shown below to be displayed on the screen. By default we do a local query for locations that relate to the India using the Bing phonebook APIs.

3 If no local results are returned, we do a global search using the Bing Geolocation APIs. If there are local results but the user is really interested in places called India, as opposed to local venues that are related to the term India, the user can toggle the type of search by changing the second selector control from Local to Global. The user is also able to change the view from road to aerial by using the selector on the bottom right corner.

4 The functionality of each of the selectors, including the Show Nearby indicator and the maximize and close buttons is explained in document titled bes_ixd_global_sketch_04.pdf. Note than that the size of the map window cannot be changed. When you go to full screen mode the map will take over the whole screen, and the controls will remain on the screen (they will collapse as shown below). Note that the color of the search term will also match the color of the border of the map shown in full screen mode. Pushpins in maps When a pushpin is tapped, it will show a bit of information on the location. The amount of information display will depend on what is available on the bing phonebook (name, address, telephone number) or bing geolocation (just name) database.

5 If the user clicks the More button, an information card will be shown with the same information. By clicking the Flip button in the bottom right corner, the card will flip and show a Microsoft Tag that shows directions to that location. That allows the end-user to get the directions to that location on their mobile phone. The bes_ixd_v309_final.pdf document describes the interaction design for maps and local searches. Notice that the visual design in the document is not correct, but the interaction design is. Usage of Tagged Objects to Initiate a Search As you can see in the Administrator s Guide, it is possible to configure tagged object to initiate a search. After a tag that matches one of the configured objects is placed on the screen, all the user has to do is press the search icon that appears next to the object. Backgrounds It is not possible to customize the backgrounds. The change every 3 minutes automatically. We picked images that were high-quality, were not distracting, and if possible, had little sense of orientation. Microsoft owns the rights to the images used on the background. Other things you need to know. The Bing application does not install in non-surface hardware (because it can only be installed on a machine with the Surface OEM SKU installed), and there is no way to download it from downloads.microsoft.com. This was a business decision made in order to reduce the support matrix, as well as not allowing competitors to run our software. There is a BingSurface.exe.config file that allows some customization of the application. Tweaking this file is not supported, but it could help you troubleshoot an issue. Notice that setting such as the maximum image results, the maximum number of map results, and the delay between background changes can be modified there. The supported way for administrators to modify their settings is to use the Bing Configuration Tool as described in the Administrator s Guide.
