1 GeoMapLive: An ipad Mapping Application for the ARMS II Survey Abstract: This document is intended to demonstrate the basic functionality of the new mapping application that has been developed to assist enumerators in identifying the latitude and longitude of selected fields in the ARMS II Survey. Getting Started: Enumerators will first have to download the application onto their ipads (detailed instructions on how to download the app are located in Appendix A). The app will install onto the enumerator s home screen in the next available open spot. To open the app, tap the icon from the home screen. This app will only display in landscape mode (meaning the ipad is flipped so it is longer horizontally than it is taller vertically). Inside the App: When you first open the app, the map will be centered to your current location. At the bottom righthand corner of the screen is a button that will always re-center the map around the ipads current location. NOTE: If you receive a message asking to use location services, always select Allow

2 TOOLBAR: - Drops a pin on the map to find the coordinates - Displays a listing of all dropped pins that are currently on the map - This feature is disabled on enumerator ipads. If touched, nothing will happen - Clears all pins and county boundaries that are on the map - Changes the map view - Allows user to search for county, city, or township

3 The maps are viewable in 3 different modes: Normal, Satellite, and Hybrid. The normal view is displayed when the app is initially opened. To switch between modes, touch your finger to the view you want. If working in an area with strong signal, the app will work without having to pre-load anything. However, if there is a chance of not having any signal or a weak signal when interviewing a respondent, county borders can be pre-loaded to the screen. **NOTE: If working in an area with weak or no cellular signal, make sure to pre-load the county borders and put the map in Hybrid view (roads & satellite). Also, zoom in somewhat to the area that the field is most likely in. If there is no signal, the maps will not refresh meaning if you move the map or zoom in or out it will be blurry and hard to identify roads and land markers. To load a county boundary, touch the Search bar on the left hand side of the toolbar this will open the keyboard and either a county name or town name can be entered. As you type, a list of possible locations will appear. If you see what you want, you can stop typing and select the appropriate location.

4 The county is outlined in a blue border. Multiple counties can be searched and displayed at the same time. To find a field, use two fingers to zoom in and zoom out. To zoom in, place your thumb and index finger close to each other on the screen and slide them away from each other. To zoom out, place your thumb and index finger away from each other on the screen and slide them close to each other.

5 When the field is found, touch the map marker icon on the toolbar it will turn from black to red. Then touch on the sample field to drop the marker onto the field. Then touch the marker that is on the field, and the latitude/longitude coordinates will display. It is recommended to write the coordinates on the questionnaire as soon as they are identified. The selected field coordinates should be entered on the last page of the questionnaire in the format displayed on the map as shown on the next page.

6 Example entry on the questionnaire with coordinates shown above: All points that are dropped will be saved as long as the app is open and the map is not cleared by the user. To see a listing of points that have been dropped on the map, touch the page button on the toolbar. A listing will appear below the search bar that displays all counties (identified with + ) and all dropped pins (identified with Label ).

7 Touch on the Pencil icon to change the name of any labels (Please do not label these with PII such as operator name). To delete a point, touch the trash can icon next to the label. To clear all pins and counts border from the map, select the icon from the toolbar.

8 Appendix A: Installing GeoMapLive on the ipad From the home screen of the ipad swipe to the second page and locate the icon labeled Touch on this icon and a Safari internet page will open. You may see a pop-up box similar to the one below. If you do, click the store front number. Once it is finished loading, a tile with the application GeoMapLive should display on the screen. Touch once anywhere on the tile and a window will appear in the center of the screen.

9 Touch once on Request You may or may not receive the following message. If you receive this message, select Install Press the Home button on the ipad and a new icon should appear on the screen (if you do not see it right away, check to see if it may have appeared on the second screen of icons by swiping your finger across the screen right to left). Here is what the new icon will look like: How the icon will look while it is downloading How the icon will look when it is finished downloading

10 Troubleshooting: If the icon does not appear after completing these steps the do the following: - Go to Home screen - Open Setting in the Do Not Use folder - On the left side of the settings menu, touch on Safari - On the right side of the settings menu touch on Clear History and Website Data - A window will appear, touch on Clear - Press the Home button on the ipad and repeat the steps above If you are still having issues after trying the above steps, please contact your CAPI point of contact in your Regional Field Office.
