5 Workstation Best Practices 1. Get buy-in Get everyone, top down and bottom up, engaged in adopting more sustainable IT behaviors. 2. Promote energy-saving behavior Share info at an individual level, with posters or through Buy smart Buy Energy-Star 5.0 and EPEAT-rated equipment. 4. Provide smart power strips Smart power strips with motion sensors make saving energy automatic. 5. Configure default energy-savers Set computer power configurations once to consume less energy. 6. Re-evaluate the printing environment Minor modifications, like using shared printers or printing two-up, lessen power and waste. 7. Reuse and responsibly recycle computer equipment 5

8 Keep the user experience in mind Test configuration changes Update users on system changes Resuming from sleep mode is best Tell users to expect to power on computers Ask users to shut down when leaving Establish a workstation maintenance window Apply software updates when users are gone Give users the ability to temporarily override power policies Be ready to create policy exceptions 8

11 What are power management settings? ACPI spec Advanced Configuration and Power Interface Common system state modes: S1 CPU & RAM on & flushed, others may be off S3 Sleep mode, RAM on S4 Hibernation mode, RAM content saved to disk, Off S3+S4 Sleep mode & Hibernation mode enabled

12 Configuring hardware and OS level settings for power management Update system BIOS settings Enable Wake-On-Lan Enable S3 mode Update operating system settings* Enable Wake-On-Lan for the network card Enable S3 mode to be on by default Loosen XP registry permissions for power management controls Apply a power management policy * These may vary depending on the Operating System used

13 Managing computers w/power management enabled Be ready to use Wake-On-Lan Consider auto-on BIOS options Helps install updates when users are gone Use with power policies or scheduled shutdown tasks Give careful consideration when deploying software updates Some updates won t apply when users are online Reboots may be needed Apply timely security updates quickly Follow-up on missing security patches

18 How are we looking today? 94% Sleep mode enabled on monitors 99% is possible 49% System sleep mode enabled on computers 80% or better should be possible Need to lower average number of hours on / day Potential to save 2 million kwh and $200k on energy costs Based on CPPM figures from 12,793 deployed agents 2M kwh = 3.36M lbs CO2 = 7,500 trees / year
