1 European Laboratory for Particle Physics Laboratoire Européen pour la Physique des Particules CH-1211 Genève 23 - Suisse CERN School of Computing 2001 SCADA Installation Document Version: 1.1 Document Date: 10 July 2001 Document Status: Document Author: Dr. P.C.Burkimsher Abstract This document provides a detailed step by step guide to installing all files necessary for the six laboratory practicals designed to teach and illustrate the PVSS SCADA product from ETM. 1 Pre-requisites The following materials need to be installed for the Practicals: 1. Windows NT 4 Service Pack 5 with Screen set to 256 colours. At least 600Mb free on your C drive. (You provide this.) 2. Internet Explorer V 5 (or better). (You provide this.) 3. Winzip (You provide this.) 4. CD Csc2001 Scada Distribution Kit I provide you with this kit. 1.1 Kit contents The CD Csc2001 Scada Distribution Kit contains two zip files: page 1

2 2 How to install PVSS Version/Issue: 1.1/ zip This file contains the PVSS distribution. 2. csc2001distributionkit.zip This file contains the Cern projects for the tutorials. Instructions for unzipping these 2 files are included in the appropriate sections below. The Cern projects file will unzip to a tree containing the following: 1. The JCOP Framework distribution of privateproject tree 3. hcalproject tree 4. muonproject tree 5. ApplicationSupport directory including: The PVSS demo license ( shield file). File generichomepanel.pnl for one of the practicals. allprojects.reg registry entries file. TextField2EventInitialize.txt file for one of the practicals. 2 How to install PVSS Installing from CD Login as local administrator Check you have enough space on drive C (at least 600Mb) Insert the PVSS CD It should autostart, else run setup.exe. Setup will probably remind you to alter your system to 256 colours. Just press OK, then click Next. Enter name=csc2001; Company=Cern; Press Next; Choose Typical install and browse. Set Path to c:\etm\pvss\ page 2

3 2 How to install PVSS Version/Issue: 1.1/1 N.B. This string is not quite the same as the default you are offered. It is imperative that you use the exact pathname and drive letter given above. Click OK. Click Yes to create this directory. Click Next. Click Next to accept the offered program folders. Check over the options you have selected and then click Next to accept them. PVSS will install. At the end, do not select either of the options (Read Me or Start now), Just click Finish. Set your system to 256 colours if you haven t already. Also select screen size 1024x768. Perform these steps as follows: Goto Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings Choose Color Palette = 256 Colors and Desktop Area = 1024x768 Press Test. Press OK. Assuming the test pattern looks fine, then when the test pattern goes away and the screen reappears, press Yes to indicate you saw the bitmap properly. Click OK to close the Display settings window and then close the control panel window. Reboot now: Start Menu> Shutdown > Restart the computer Login as a non-privileged user. 2.2 Installing from a zip file. Get the zip file called zip either from the Cern Csc2001 Scada Distribution CD, OR get it from the web as follows: Visit as follows: Follow the link Download PVSS Login with username Csc2001, password secret Click Get the zip file from the Web Click PVSS-II v Official Release page 3

4 2 How to install PVSS Version/Issue: 1.1/1 The zip file should download. Double click on the zip file you retrieved and unzip it into a temporary directory of your choice. A directory cdromimage will be created in your temporary directory. Double click on cdromimage\setup.exe Setup will probably remind you to alter your system to 256 colours. Just press OK, then click Next. Enter name=csc2001; Company=Cern; Press Next; Choose Typical install and browse. Set Path to c:\etm\pvss\ N.B. 5 3 How to install the Cern Summer School additions Version/Issue: 1.1/1 3 How to install the Cern Summer School additions Create a directory c:\csc2001 Unzip the csc2001distributionkit.zip file (to be found on the Cern Csc2001 Scada Distribution CD) to c:\csc2001 as follows: Double click on the zip file. Click the Extract icon. In the Extract to field: Select c:\csc2001 Press the Extract button. The Cern tutorial files should install. License the software as follows: Copy the shield file from c:\csc2001\application Support\shield to c:\etm\pvss\2.11.1\shield Import the registry entries for the 3 projects as follows: Double click on the file c:\csc2001\applicationsupport\allprojects.reg Click OK. Make the three project directories shared. Do this to the first project as follows: Right Click on My Computer, and select Explore to get a Windows Explorer window. Navigate to c:\csc2001 In the Windows Explorer window, Right click on the folder, c:\csc2001\hcalproject Left click on Sharing... In the Sharing tab, click the Shared As radio button. Accept the default Share Name by pressing OK. The share name need not be accessible from MS-DOS workstations. Click Yes to the warning. Repeat these steps for the other two projects as well: c:\csc2001\muonproject c:\csc2001\privateproject page 5

6 4 How to check that the installation was successful Version/Issue: 1.1/1 Check that all 3 project folders now have the sharing hand on their icon. 4 How to check that the installation was successful Select Start Menu > Programs > Startup > PVSS II PVSS Online Help This should run the help in an Internet Explorer window. Select Start Menu > Programs > Startup > PVSS II > PVSS Console In the drop down list, select Project = privateproject Press the Start button on the console window. The PVSS Log viewer window should appear. You will get a warning popup that you only have a demo license. Click OK. The PVSS Lady s face should appear and go away again. The PVSS Console window should have a column of all green LEDs. Check the Log viewer window. You should see lots of INFO messages.
