12 File Tiering Overview Allows for tiering of file data based on policies E.g., move any files that are larger than 10MB and haven t been accessed in 30 days Designed to be seamless to the end user Leaves a small 8KB stub to point to the actual location of the data Requests to access the file are redirected to the repository location or recalled NDMP backups can be stub-aware Reduces backup window 12

13 File Tiering Overview Find a file that matches a policy TIERING Dell EMC Unity Primary Storage Copy that file to the cloud Replace the original file with a stub Stub is 8K in size Meta-data in stub contains all info required for recall Clients Stub IP Cloud Tiering Appliance The stub looks and behaves like a normal file No need to train users or modify applications Primary storage space is now freed Destination Clouds 13

14 File Tiering Policy Parameters Policy Type = Archive Delay Period Delays the stubbing operation Allows replication/backup to complete before source files are stubbed Retention Period Prohibits files/stubs from being deleted until the specified retention period 14

15 File Tiering Matching Expressions Expression - Custom rule based on file attributes Accessed Time Modified Time Attribute Change Time Size File Name Directory Name An rule can contain one or more expressions All expressions must match for the action to be triggered Action can be: Archive Don t Archive 15

16 File Tiering Archive Destination (Repository) Choose an archive destination for files that meet the policy criteria Dell EMC Unity only supports cloud repositories Multiple rules can be added to a policy Rules are run in the order they are listed Critical to list the most exclusive rules first E.g, 1. Any file greater than 50MB ECS E.g, 2. Any file greater than 10MB Azure X 16

17 File Tiering Scheduler Time Based Now On a regular schedule (daily, weekly, monthly) At a single specified time in the future Capacity Based Automatically warns/runs run when the capacity threshold is reached Simulation Provides a report on the what would be archived if the policy is run Does not make any actual changes 17
