1 Quik Setup Guide Start Here MFC-7860DW Please read the Safety and Legal ooklet first efore you set up your mahine. Then, please read this Quik Setup Guide for the orret setup and installation. 2 CAUTION When you move the mahine, grasp the side handholds that are under the sanner. DO NOT arry the mahine y holding it at the ottom. Keep a minimum gap around the mahine as shown in the illustration. 250 mm 100 mm 100 mm 90 mm The omponents inluded in the ox may differ depending on your ountry. Please save the original pakaging should you need to ship the mahine in future. If for any reason you must ship your mahine, arefully repak the mahine in the original pakaging to avoid any damage during transit. The mahine should e adequately insured with the arrier. For how to repak the mahine, see Paking and shipping the mahine in the Advaned User's Guide. The interfae ale is not a standard aessory. Buy the appropriate interfae ale for the interfae you want to use (USB or Network). USB ale It is reommended to use a USB 2.0 ale (Type A/B) that is no longer than 2 metres. DO NOT onnet the interfae ale at this time. Conneting the interfae ale is done during the MFL-Pro installation proess. Network ale Use a straight-through Category5 (or greater) twisted-pair ale for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet Network. 2

3 2 Remove the paking material from the mahine d Lift the elasti and off the drum. IMPORTANT DO NOT onnet the AC power ord yet. a Remove the paking tape from the outside of the mahine and the film overing the sanner glass. Open the front over. e Pull the paper strip to remove the protetive material as shown in the illustration. Remove the Silia Pak from the inside of the mahine. f Take out the drum unit and toner artridge assemly. CAUTION DO NOT eat the Silia Pak. Please disard. If ingested seek medial attention immediately. 3

4 g Gently shake it from side to side several times to distriute the toner evenly inside the assemly. a 3 Load paper in the paper tray Pull the paper tray ompletely out of the mahine. h Put the drum unit and toner artridge assemly ak in the mahine. While pressing the green paper-guide release lever a, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots. i Close the front over of the mahine. 1 4

5 Fan the stak of paper well to avoid paper jams and misfeeds. 4 Connet the power ord and telephone line d Put paper in the tray and make sure: The paper is elow the maximum paper mark ( ) a. Over filling the paper tray will ause paper jams. The side to e printed on must e fae down. The paper guides touh the sides of the paper so it will feed orretly. 1 a IMPORTANT DO NOT onnet the interfae ale yet. Connet the AC power ord to the mahine, and then plug it into an eletrial soket. Turn on the mahine s power swith. Connet the telephone line ord. Connet one end of the telephone line ord to the soket on the mahine marked LINE and the other end to a telephone wall soket. (Example for U.K.) IMPORTANT The telephone line ord MUST e onneted to the soket on the mahine marked LINE. e Put the paper tray firmly ak in the mahine. Make sure that it is ompletely inserted into the mahine. For more information aout reommended paper, see Reommended paper and print media in the Basi User s Guide. WARNING The mahine must e grounded using an earthed plug. Sine the mahine is grounded through the eletrial soket, you an protet yourself from potentially hazardous eletrial onditions on the telephone network y keeping the power ord onneted to your mahine when you onnet it to a telephone line. Similarly, you an protet yourself when you want to move your mahine y disonneting the telephone line first and then the power ord. 5

6 If you are sharing one telephone line with an external telephone, onnet it as shown elow. 5 Choose a Reeive Mode (Example for U.K.) 1 Extension telephone 2 External telephone If you are sharing one telephone line with an external telephone answering mahine, onnet it as shown elow. (Example for U.K.) Set the reeive mode to External TAD if you have an external answering mahine. See Choose a Reeive Mode on page 6. For additional details, see Conneting an external TAD in the Basi User s Guide. 1 2 There are four possile reeive modes: Fax Only, Fax/Tel, Manual and External TAD. Do you want to use the telephone features of your mahine (if availale) or an external telephone or external telephone answering devie onneted on the same line as the mahine? Yes Are you using the voie message funtion of an external telephone answering devie? No Do you want the mahine to answer fax and telephone alls automatially? Yes No Yes Fax Only Your mahine automatially answers every all as a fax. Fax/Tel Your mahine ontrols the line and automatially answers every all. If the all is not a fax, the phone will ring for you to pik up the all. Manual No You ontrol the phone line and must answer every all yourself. External TAD Your external telephone answering devie (TAD) automatially answers every all. Voie messages are stored on the external TAD. Fax messages are automatially printed. a Press Menu, 0, 1. Press a or to hoose the reeive mode. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. For more details, see Using reeive modes in the Basi User's Guide. 6

7 6 Set the LCD ontrast (if needed) If you are having diffiulty reading the LCD, try hanging the ontrast setting. a Press Menu, 1, 5. Press to inrease the ontrast. OR Press d to derease the ontrast. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. d e f Enter the two digits for the day on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Day:25 (e.g. Enter 2, 5 for 25th.) Enter the time in 24-hour format on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Time:15:25 (e.g. Enter 1, 5, 2, 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. 7 Set the date and time The mahine displays the time, and if you set up the station ID the date and time will e added to eah fax you send. a Press Menu, 0, 2, 1. Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Year:2011 (e.g. Enter 1, 1 for 2011.) Enter the two digits for the month on the dial pad, and then press OK. Date&Time Month:03 (e.g. Enter 0, 3 for Marh.) 7

8 8 Enter personal information (station ID) The mahine displays the date and time, and if you set up the station ID, it will add it to eah fax you send. a Press Menu, 0, 3. d Enter your fax numer (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. Station ID Fax: Enter your telephone numer (up to 20 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. If your telephone numer and fax numer are the same, enter the same numer again. Station ID Tel: Use the dial pad to enter your name (up to 20 haraters), and then press OK. Station ID Name: See the following hart for entering your name. If you need to enter a harater that is on the same key as the last harater, press to move the ursor to the right. If you entered a letter inorretly and want to hange it, press d or to move the ursor to the inorret harater, press Clear. e Press key 9 Fax One time Two times Press Stop/Exit. If you make a mistake and want to start again, press Stop/Exit and go ak to step a. Transmission Report Your Brother mahine is equipped with a Transmission Verifiation Report that an e used as onfirmation that you sent a fax. This report lists the name or fax numer of the reeiving party, the date, time, and duration of the transmission, the numer of pages transmitted, and whether or not the transmission was suessful. If you want to use the Fax Transmission Report feature see Printing reports in the Advaned User's Guide. 8

9 10 Set tone or pulse dialling mode Your mahine omes set for Tone dialling servie. If you have Pulse dialling servie (rotary), you need to hange the dialling mode. a Press Menu, 0, Press a or to hoose Pulse (or Tone). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. Set the telephone line ompatiility If you are onneting the mahine to a VoIP servie (over the Internet) you need to hange the ompatiility setting. a Press Menu, 2, 0, 1. If you are using an analogue telephone line you an skip this step. 12 Press a or to hoose Basi(for VoIP). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. Set the telephone line type If you are onneting the mahine to a line that features a PABX (PBX) or ISDN to send and reeive faxes, it is also neessary to hange the phone line type aordingly y ompleting the following steps. d e f Do one of the following: If you want to hange the urrent prefix numer, press 1 and go to step d. If you do not want to hange the urrent prefix numer, press 2 and go to step f. The default setting is!. When you press Tel/R,! will e displayed on the LCD. Press Clear to delete the default setting, then enter the prefix numer (up to 5 digits) on the dial pad, and then press OK. You an use the numer 0 to 9, #, l and!. (Press Tel/R to display!.) You annot use! with any other numers or haraters. If your telephone system requires a timed reak reall, press Tel/R to enter the reak. Press a or to hoose On or Always and press OK. If you hoose On, pressing Tel/R (the sreen displays! ) will let you aess an outside line. If you hoose Always, you an aess an outside line without pressing Tel/R. Press Stop/Exit. PBX and TRANSFER The mahine is initially set to Normal, whih lets the mahine onnet to a standard PSTN (Puli Swithed Telephone Network) line. However, many offies use a entral telephone system or Private Automati Branh Exhange (PABX). Your mahine an e onneted to most types of PABX (PBX). The mahine s reall feature supports timed reak reall only (TBR). TBR will work with most PABX (PBX) systems allowing you to gain aess to an outside line, or transfer alls to another extension. The feature works when Tel/R is pressed. a Press Menu, 0, 6. Press a or to hoose PBX, ISDN or Normal. Press OK. Do one of the following: If you hoose ISDN or Normal, go to step f. If you hoose PBX, go to step. 9

10 13 Automati Daylight Savings Time You an set the mahine to hange automatially for daylight savings time. It will reset itself forward one hour in the Spring and akward one hour in the Autumn. a Press Menu, 0, 2, 2. Press a or to hoose On (or Off). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 10

12 USB Windows For USB Interfae Users (Windows 2000 Professional/XP/XP Professional x64 Edition/Windows Vista /Windows 7) 15 Before you install 16 Install MFL-Pro Suite a Make sure that your omputer is ON and you are logged on with Administrator rights. IMPORTANT If there are any programs running, lose them. The sreens may differ depending on your operating system. The installation CD-ROM inludes SanSoft PaperPort 12SE. This software supports Windows XP (SP3 or greater), XP Professional x64 Edition (SP2 or greater), Windows Vista (SP2 or greater) and Windows 7. Update to the latest Windows Servie Pak efore installing MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows 2000 (SP4 or greater) users, when the SanSoft PaperPort 11SE download sreen appears during the installation of MFL-Pro Suite, follow the on-sreen instrutions. Turn off the mahine and make sure the USB interfae ale is NOT onneted to the mahine. If you have already onneted the ale, disonnet it. a d Put the installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model name sreen appears, hoose your mahine. If the language sreen appears, hoose your language. If the Brother sreen does not appear automatially, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-lik the CD-ROM ion, and then doule-lik start.exe. Clik Initial Installation and then Install MFL-Pro Suite. Clik Yes if you aept the liense agreements. If the installation does not ontinue automatially, open the top menu again y ejeting and then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-lik the start.exe program from the root folder, and ontinue from step to install MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, when the User Aount Control sreen appears, lik Allow or Yes. If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Sript3 printer driver), hoose Custom Install and then follow the on-sreen instrutions. Follow the on-sreen instrutions until this sreen appears. 12

13 USB Windows e Connet the USB ale to the USB onnetor marked with the symol on your mahine and then onnet the ale to your omputer. f Turn the mahine on, and follow the on-sreen instrutions to omplete setup. IMPORTANT DO NOT anel any of the sreens during the installation. It may take a few seonds for all sreens to appear. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, when the Windows Seurity sreen appears, selet the hek ox and lik Install to omplete the installation orretly. If an error message appears during the software installation, run the Installation Diagnostis loated in Start/All Programs/Brother/MFC-XXXX (where MFC-XXXX is your model name). Windows USBMaintosh Finish The installation is now omplete. Depending on your seurity settings, a Windows Seurity or antivirus software window may appear when using the mahine or its software. Please allow or permit the window to ontinue. XML Paper Speifiation Printer Driver The XML Paper Speifiation Printer Driver is the most suitale driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7 when printing from appliations that use the XML Paper Speifiation douments. Please download the latest driver y aessing the Brother Solutions Center at 13

You must e logged on with Administrator rights. IMPORTANT For Ma OS X users, upgrade to Ma OS X x. (For the latest drivers and information on the Ma OS X you are using, visit a Put the installation CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Doule-lik the Start Here OSX ion. Follow the on-sreen instrutions. If you want to install the PS driver (BR-Sript3 printer driver), please go to the Brother Solutions Center at lik Downloads on your model page and visit FAQ's for setup instrutions. Connet the USB ale to the USB onnetor marked with the symol on your mahine and then onnet the ale to your Maintosh. It may take a few minutes for installation to omplete. Follow the on-sreen instrutions until this sreen appears. Choose your mahine from the list, and then lik OK. Make sure your mahine s power swith is on. d When this sreen appears, lik Next. The installation of MFL-Pro Suite is now omplete. Go to step 17 on page

15 USB Maintosh 17 Download and install Presto! PageManager When Presto! PageManager is installed OCR apaility is added to Brother ControlCenter2. You an easily san, share and organize photos and douments using Presto! PageManager. On the Brother Support sreen, lik Presto! PageManager and follow the on-sreen instrutions. (Reommended) and lik Next. (Not for Windows 2000 users) If your mahine is not found over the network, onfirm your settings y following the on-sreen instrutions. You an find your mahine s IP address and the node name y printing out the Network Configuration Report. See Print the Network Configuration Report on page 37. For Windows Vista and Windows 7 users, when the Windows Seurity sreen appears, selet the hek ox and lik Install to omplete the installation orretly. 18 Wired Network Windows 17 Install MFL-Pro Suite on additional omputers (if needed) If you want to use your mahine with multiple omputers on the network, install MFL-Pro Suite on eah omputer. Go to step 16 on page 16. Network liense (Windows ) This produt inludes a PC liense for up to 5 users. This liense supports the installation of the MFL-Pro Suite inluding SanSoft PaperPort 12SE or SanSoft PaperPort 11SE on up to 5 PCs on the network. If you want to use more than 5 PCs with SanSoft PaperPort 12SE or SanSoft PaperPort 11SE installed, please purhase the Brother NL-5 pak whih is a multiple PC liense agreement pak for up to 5 additional users. To purhase the NL-5 pak, ontat your authorized Brother dealer or ontat Brother ustomer servie. Finish The installation is now omplete. If you use a speified IP Address for the mahine, you must set the Boot Method to Stati y using the ontrol panel. For more information, see Network menu in the Network User's Guide. Depending on your seurity settings, a Windows Seurity or antivirus software window may appear when using the mahine or its software. Please allow or permit the window to ontinue. XML Paper Speifiation Printer Driver The XML Paper Speifiation Printer Driver is the most suitale driver for Windows Vista and Windows 7 when printing from appliations that use the XML Paper Speifiation douments. 20 Wired Network Maintosh You an find your mahine s MAC Address (Ethernet Address) and IP Address y printing out the Network Configuration Report. See Print the Network Configuration Report on page 37. If this sreen appears lik OK. Enter a name for your Maintosh in Display Name up to 15 haraters long and lik OK. Go to d. 17 Download and install Presto! PageManager When Presto! PageManager is installed OCR apaility is added to Brother ControlCenter2. You an easily san, share and organize photos and douments using Presto! PageManager. On the Brother Support sreen, lik Presto! PageManager and follow the on-sreen instrutions. If you want to use the mahine s SCAN key to san over the network, you must hek the Register your omputer with the "San To" funtion on the mahine ox. The name you enter will appear on the mahine s LCD when you press (SCAN) and hoose a san option. (For more information, see Network Sanning in the Software User's Guide.) d When this sreen appears, lik Next. The installation of MFL-Pro Suite is now omplete. Go to step 17 on page Install MFL-Pro Suite on additional omputers (if needed) If you want to use your mahine with multiple omputers on the network, install MFL-Pro Suite on eah omputer. Go to step 16 on page 19. Finish The installation is now omplete. If you use a speified IP Address for the mahine, you must set the Boot Method to Stati y using the ontrol panel. For more information, see Network menu in the Network User's Guide. 20

21 For Wireless Network Users For Wireless Network Interfae Users 15 Before you egin First you must onfigure the wireless network settings of your mahine to ommuniate with your network aess point/router. After the mahine is onfigured to ommuniate with your aess point/router, omputers on your network will have aess to the mahine. To use the mahine from these omputers, you will need to install the drivers and software. The following steps will guide you through the onfiguration and installation proess. IMPORTANT If you are going to onnet the mahine to your network, we reommend that you ontat your system administrator prior to installation. You must know your wireless network settings efore you proeed with this installation. If you have previously onfigured the wireless settings of the mahine you must reset the network (LAN) settings efore you an onfigure the wireless settings again. 1. On your mahine, press Menu. Press Press 0 to hoose Network Reset. 3. Press 1 twie for Yes to aept the hange. To ahieve optimum results with normal everyday doument printing, plae the Brother mahine as lose to the network aess point/router as possile with minimal ostrutions. Large ojets and walls etween the two devies as well as interferene from other eletroni devies an affet the data transfer speed of your douments. Due to these fators, wireless may not e the est method of onnetion for all types of douments and appliations. If you are printing large files, suh as multi-page douments with mixed text and large graphis, you may want to onsider hoosing wired Ethernet for a faster data transfer or USB for the fastest throughput speed. Although the Brother MFC-7860DW an e used in oth a wired and wireless network, only one of the onnetion methods an e used at a time. 22 For Wireless Network Users 16 Choose your wireless install method The following instrutions will offer three methods for installing your Brother mahine in a wireless network environment. Choose the method you prefer for your environment. To setup your mahine in any other wireless environment, you an find instrutions in the Network User's Guide. a Configuration using the Installation CD-ROM and temporarily using a USB ale (Windows only) It is reommended that you use a PC wirelessly onneted to your network for this method. IMPORTANT You need to temporarily use a USB ale during onfiguration (ale not inluded). For Windows 2000 and Windows XP users you will need to know the wireless settings of your network efore you proeed. Please write down your wireless network settings in the area elow. Item SSID (Network Name) Network Key (Seurity Key/Enryption Key) Reord the urrent wireless network settings * The Network Key may also e desried as the Password, Seurity Key or Enryption Key. IMPORTANT Please do not ontat Brother Customer Servie for assistane without the wireless seurity information. We annot assist you in loating your network seurity settings. If you do not know this information (SSID and Network Key), you annot ontinue the wireless setup. How an I find this information (SSID and Network Key)? 1. You should see the doumentation provided with your wireless aess point/router. 2. The initial network name ould e the manufaturer s name or the model name. 3. If you do not know the seurity information, please onsult the router manufaturer, your system administrator, or internet provider. Now go to page 24 22

23 For Wireless Network Users Manual onfiguration from the ontrol panel (Windows and Maintosh) If your wireless aess point/router does not support Wi-Fi Proteted Setup (WPS) or AOSS, write down the wireless network settings of your wireless aess point/router in the area elow. If your aess point is set to not roadast the SSID you an manually add it y liking the Advaned utton. Follow the on-sreen instrutions for entering the Name (SSID), and then lik Next. j If the onfirmation sreen appears, hek the ox and lik Next. When the following sreen appears, hek Yes if you want to onnet with the listed SSID. Clik Next and go to n. l If your network is not onfigured for Authentiation and Enryption, the following sreen will appear. On your mahine, press Menu, 6 (Network), 2 (WLAN), 2 (Setup Wizard). When WLAN Enale? is displayed, press 1 to hoose On. This will start the wireless setup wizard. Otherwise press Stop/Exit to exit from the wireless setup wizard. The mahine will searh for availale SSIDs. If a list of SSIDs is displayed, use the a or key to hoose the SSID you wrote down in step 16 on page 22, then press OK. If you are using an authentiation and enryption method that requires a Network Key, go to. If your authentiation method is Open System and your enryption mode is None, go to e. It will take several seonds to display a list of availale SSIDs. If a list of SSIDs is not displayed, make sure your aess point is on. Move your mahine loser to the aess point and try starting from a again. If your aess point is set to not roadast the SSID you will have to manually add the SSID name. For details, see Configuring your mahine when the SSID is not roadast in the Network User's Guide. If your wireless aess point/router supports Wi-Fi Proteted Setup, Seleted aess point supports WPS. Use WPS? appears. To onnet your mahine using the automati wireless mode, press 1 to hoose Yes. (If you hoose No, go to to enter the Network Key.) When Start WPS on your wireless aess point/router,then hoose Next. appears, press the Wi-Fi Proteted Setup utton on your wireless aess point/router, and then press 1. Go to e. d e Enter the Network Key you wrote down in step 16 on page 22 using the dial pad to hoose eah letter or numer. To delete the letters you have entered, press Clear. For example, to enter the letter a, press the 2 key on the dial pad one. To enter the numer 3, press the 3 key on the dial pad seven times. The installation CD-ROM inludes SanSoft PaperPort 12SE. This software supports Windows XP (SP3 or greater), XP Professional x64 Edition (SP2 or greater), Windows Vista (SP2 or greater) and Windows 7. Update to the latest Windows Servie Pak efore installing MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows 2000 (SP4 or greater) users, when the SanSoft PaperPort 11SE download sreen appears during the installation of MFL-Pro Suite, follow the on-sreen instrutions. Go to step e. 20 Download and install Presto! PageManager When Presto! PageManager is installed OCR apaility is added to Brother ControlCenter2. You an easily san, share and organize photos and douments using Presto! PageManager. On the Brother Support sreen, lik Presto! PageManager and follow the on-sreen instrutions. If you want to use the mahine s SCAN key to san over the network, you must hek the Register your omputer with the "San To" funtion on the mahine ox. The name you enter will appear on the mahine s LCD when you press (SCAN) and hoose a san option. 37 For Network Users We Based Management (we rowser) The Brother print server is equipped with a we server that allows you to monitor its status or hange some of its onfiguration settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protool). The default User Name is admin and the default password is aess. You an use a we rowser to hange this password. We reommend Mirosoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or greater) or Firefox 3.0 (or greater) for Windows and Safari 3.0 (or greater) for Maintosh. Please also make sure that JavaSript and ookies are always enaled in whihever rowser you use. To use a we rowser, you will need to know the IP address of the print server. The IP address of the print server is listed on the Network Configuration Report. a Open your rowser. Type s IP address/ into your rowser s address ar (where mahine s IP address is the IP address of the printer or the print server name). For example Print the Network Configuration Report You an print the Network Configuration Report to onfirm the urrent network settings. a Turn the mahine on and wait until it is in the Ready state. Press Menu, 5, 6. d Press Start. The mahine will print the urrent network settings. Press Stop/Exit. Restore the network settings to fatory default To restore all network settings of the internal Print/San server to fatory default, please follow the steps elow. a Make sure the mahine is not operating, then disonnet all the ales from the mahine (exept the power ord).
