Remove the green protetive pking y lifting the front of the mhine nd then pulling down on the pking prt. Remove the plsti g ontining the ink rtridges from on top of the pper try. 2 The omponents inluded in the ox my differ depending on your ountry. Sve ll pking mterils nd the ox in se for ny reson you must ship your mhine. You need to purhse the orret interfe le for the interfe you wnt to use (for USB or network onnetion). USB le Plese mke sure you use USB 2.0 le (Type A/B) tht is no more thn 2 metres long. Network le Use stright-through Ctegory5 (or greter) twisted-pir le for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fst Ethernet Network. 3 Lod plin A4 pper Pull the pper try ompletely out of the mhine. 1 MFC-990CW only Mke sure you remove the ttery, ttery over nd ordless hndset from the rton nd from their individul pkging. Sve them for when you Instll the ttery on pge 11. Open the pper try over. 1 2 Connet the hndset (MFC-790CW only) Connet the urled hndset ord to the hndset. With oth hnds, gently press nd slide the pper side guides nd then the pper length guide to fit the pper size. Mke sure tht the tringulr mrks on the pper side guides nd pper length guide line up with the mrk for the pper size you re using

3 d e Fn the stk of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. Gently put the pper into the pper try print side down nd top edge first. Chek tht the pper is flt in the try. i While holding the pper try in ple, pull out the pper support until it liks, nd then unfold the pper support flp. Importnt Do not push the pper in too fr. 2 1 f Gently djust the pper side guides to the pper with oth hnds. Mke sure tht the pper side guides touh the edges of the pper. g Close the pper try over. 1 h Slowly push the pper try ompletely into the mhine. 3

4 4 Connet the power ord nd telephone line Importnt DO NOT onnet the USB le yet (if you re using USB le). Connet the power ord. WARNING Sine the mhine is grounded through the power outlet, you n protet yourself from potentilly hzrdous eletril onditions on the telephone network y keeping the power ord onneted to your mhine when you onnet it to telephone line. Similrly, you n protet yourself when you wnt to move your mhine y disonneting the telephone line first nd then the power ord. Importnt The telephone line ord MUST e onneted to the soket on the mhine mrked LINE. If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone, onnet it s shown elow. 1 WARNING The mhine must e fitted with n erthed plug. Connet the telephone line ord. Connet one end of the telephone line ord to the soket on the mhine mrked LINE nd the other end to telephone wll soket. 1 Extension telephone 2 Externl telephone Plese mke sure you use n externl telephone with le no more thn 3 metres long. 2 If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone nswering mhine, onnet it s shown elow. Set the reeive mode to Mnul if you hve n externl nswering mhine. See Choose Reeive Mode on pge 7. 5 5 Instll the ink rtridges e Turn the green kno on the protetive yellow p lokwise until it liks to relese the vuum sel, then remove the p. WARNING If ink gets in your eyes, wsh them out with wter t one, nd if irrittion ours onsult dotor. Mke sure tht the power is turned on. The LCD shows: No Crtridge Instll Ink BK Blk C Cyn Y M Yellow Mgent 1 Open the ink rtridge over. Remove the green protetive prt. 1 f Tke re to mth the olour of the lever with the rtridge olour, s shown in the digrm elow. 1 2 d Do not throw wy the green protetive prt. You will need it if you trnsport the mhine. Unpk the ink rtridge. 1 g Instll eh ink rtridge in the diretion of the rrow on the lel. 5

6 h Gently push the ink rtridge until it liks. After ll the ink rtridges re instlled lose the ink rtridge over. If ll lines re ler nd visile, press Yes to finish the qulity hek. OK If you n see missing short lines, press No nd go to d. Poor The mhine will prepre the ink tue system for printing. This proess will tke pproximtely four minutes. Do not turn off the mhine. 6 Chek the print qulity d The LCD sks you if the print qulity is OK for lk nd olour. Press Yes or No. Blk OK?. When the preprtion proess hs finished, the LCD shows this messge Set Pper nd Press Strt Yes After pressing Yes or No for oth lk nd olour, the LCD shows: No Strt Clening? Press Strt Press Colour Strt. Chek the qulity of the four olour loks on the sheet. (lk/yellow/yn/mgent) 1 e f Press Colour Strt, the mhine will then strt lening the olours. After lening is finished, press Colour Strt. The mhine strts printing the Print Qulity Chek Sheet gin. Go k to. 6

7 7 Choose Reeive Mode There re three possile reeive modes: Fx Only, Fx/Tel nd Mnul. Are you using the uilt-in TAD? No No Yes Yes Yes Are you using the voie messge funtion of n externl telephone nswering devie? No See Digitl TAD in Chpter 9 of the User's Guide. Do you wnt to use the telephone fetures of your mhine (if ville) or n externl telephone or externl telephone nswering devie onneted on the sme line s the mhine? Do you wnt the mhine to nswer fx nd telephone lls utomtilly? Yes Fx Only Your mhine utomtilly nswers every ll s fx. Mnul You ontrol the telephone line nd must nswer every ll yourself. Fx/Tel Your mhine ontrols the line nd utomtilly nswers every ll. If the ll is not fx, the telephone will ring for you to pik up the ll. Mnul No Your externl telephone nswering devie (TAD) utomtilly nswers every ll. Voie messges re stored on the externl TAD. If you set Fx Detet to On, the Fx messges re printed. d e f Press MENU. 8 8 Set up the TAD 10 Set the dte nd time You must reord n outgoing messge in order to use the TAD mode. Reord the TAD outgoing messge (TAD Messge). See Outgoing messge (OGM) in Chpter 9 of the User s Guide. Ativte TAD mode. Press. The utton will light when the mode is tive. The mhine displys the dte nd time, nd if you set up the sttion ID, it will dd it to eh fx you send. d e Press MENU. Press or to disply Initil Setup. Press Initil Setup. Press Dte&Time. Enter the lst two digits of the yer on the Touhsreen, nd then press OK. Dte&Time Yer: Set the LCD ontrst (If needed) If you re hving diffiulty reding the LCD, try hnging the ontrst setting. d e f g h If the TAD Mode is on, it overrides your Reeive Mode setting. 9 11 Enter personl informtion (sttion ID) 12 Set tone or pulse dilling mode You should store your nme nd fx numer to e printed on ll fx pges tht you send. d e f g Press MENU. Press or to disply Initil Setup. Press Initil Setup. Press Sttion ID. Enter your fx numer (up to 20 digits) on the Touhsreen, nd then press OK. To enter numers or speil letters, press repetedly until the hrter you wnt to enter ppers, then press the hrter you wnt to use. For exmple, to enter the UK dilling ode +44, press until + ppers then enter +. Press until numers pper then press 4, 4 nd the rest of your numer. Enter your nme (up to 20 hrters) using the Touhsreen, nd then press OK. If you need to enter hrter tht is on the sme utton s the lst hrter, press to move the ursor to the right. If you entered letter inorretly nd wnt to hnge it, press d or to move the ursor to the inorret hrter, press. Press Stop/Exit. If you mke mistke nd wnt to strt gin, press Stop/Exit nd go k to. Set the telephone line type If you re onneting the mhine to line tht fetures PBX or ISDN to send nd reeive fxes, it is neessry to hnge the telephone line type ordingly y ompleting the following steps. d e f g Press MENU. PBX nd TRANSFER The mhine is initilly set to Norml, whih lets the mhine onnet to stndrd PSTN (Puli Swithed Telephone Network) line. However, mny offies use entrl telephone system or Privte Brnh Exhnge (PBX). Your mhine n e onneted to most types of PBX. The mhine s rell feture supports timed rek rell only (TBR). TBR will work with most PBX systems llowing you to gin ess to n outside line, or trnsfer lls to nother extension. The feture works when the R key is pressed. 9

11 Set up the ordless hndset (MFC-990CW only) Instll the ttery Chrge the ttery 14 Insert the onnetor of the ttery in the diretion shown elow. 15 Ple the ordless hndset on the rdle with the dil pd fing forwrd. 2 1 Ple the ttery in the position shown. After ttery replement of the ordless hndset, you should set the dte nd time. (See Dte nd Time in the DECT Hndset BCL-D70 User s Guide.) If your ttery hrge level is getting low, you should hrge the ttery. You n see the ttery hrge level inditor t the ottom right of the LCD. Instll the ttery over y sliding it onto the k of the hndset. 16 Set your ountry on the ordless hndset d Be reful tht you do not th the ttery onnetor ord. Chrge the ttery y leving the ordless hndset in the rdle for t lest 12 hours efore you use it. You n ontinue to set up the hndset during this time. The first time you instll the ttery, you must set your ountry so tht the ordless hndset works orretly on lol teleommunition lines. d The LCD shows: Set Country Press OK Key Press Menu/OK. Press or to hoose your ountry. Press Menu/OK. Press 1 to onfirm. The LCD of the hndset will disply Serhing for Bse Unit or Bse Unit not deteted until the initil setup of the mhine is omplete. 11

12 17 Choose lotion Choose lotion where the temperture remins etween 10 C nd 35 C. Do not put the ordless hndset ner heters, ir onditioners, wter or hemils. Do not expose the ordless hndset to diret sunlight, exessive het, moisture, or dust. Do not use the ordless hndset ner eletromedil equipment. We reommend t lest 3 m etween the mhine (se unit) or ordless hndset nd possile soures of rdio interferene. 3 m 3 m 18 Position the ntenn on the se unit Move the ntenn to the up position s shown elow. Avoid using in n re where it is diffiult for rdio wves to penetrte suh s in reinfored onrete uilding, ner metl furniture or doors. Disonnet the mhine from the power soket nd from your omputer, if you lredy onneted n interfe le. Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme sreen ppers, hoose your mhine. When the SnSoft PperPort 11SE Liense Agreement window ppers, lik Yes if you gree to the Softwre Liense Agreement. USB Windows Mintosh d e The instlltion of SnSoft PperPort 11SE will utomtilly strt nd is followed y the instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite. Gently push the snner over support down nd lose the snner over Importnt If you hve previously set up your mhine for wireless network nd then wnt to set it up on wired network, you should hek tht the mhine s Network I/F is set to Wired LAN. The wireless network interfe will eome intive with this setting. On your mhine, press MENU. Press or to disply Network nd press Network. Press Network I/F. Press Wired LAN. Press Stop/Exit. 22

23 Wired Network Windows 23 Instll MFL-Pro Suite Put the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme sreen ppers, hoose your mhine. If the lnguge sreen ppers, hoose your lnguge. If this sreen ppers, lik OK nd restrt your omputer. If the instlltion does not ontinue utomtilly, open the min menu gin y ejeting nd then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-lik the strt.exe progrm from the root folder, nd ontinue from to instll MFL- Pro Suite. 24 f Wired Network Choose Wired Network Connetion, nd then lik Next. Windows If the mhine is onfigured for your network, hoose the mhine from the list, nd then lik Next. This window will not pper if there is only one mhine onneted on the network, it will e hosen utomtilly. g For Windows XP SP2/Windows Vist users, when this sreen ppers, hoose Chnge the Firewll port settings to enle network onnetion nd ontinue with the instlltion. (Reommended) nd lik Next. If your mhine shows APIPA in the IP Address field, lik Configure IP Address nd enter n IP ddress for your mhine tht is suitle for your network. If the mhine is not yet onfigured for use on your network, the following sreen ppers. If you re using firewll other thn Windows Firewll or Windows Firewll is off, this sreen my pper. See the instrutions provided with your firewll softwre for informtion on how to dd the following network ports. For network snning, dd UDP port For network PC-Fx reeiving, dd UDP port If you still hve troule with your network onnetion, dd UDP port 137. h Clik OK. The Configure IP Address window will pper. Enter n IP ddress for your mhine tht is suitle for your network y following the on-sreen instrutions. The instlltion of the Brother drivers will utomtilly strt. The instlltion sreens pper one fter nother. Importnt DO NOT nel ny of the sreens during the instlltion. It my tke few seonds for ll sreens to pper. 24

25 Wired Network Windows For Windows Vist, when this sreen ppers, lik the hek ox nd lik Instll to omplete the instlltion orretly. 24 Finish nd restrt Clik Finish to restrt your omputer. After restrting the omputer, you must e logged on with Administrtor rights. i When the On-Line Registrtion sreen is displyed, mke your seletion nd follow the on-sreen instrutions. If n error messge ppers during the softwre instlltion, run the Instlltion Dignostis loted in Strt/All Progrms/Brother/ MFC-XXXX (where MFC-XXXX is your model nme). 25 Instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl omputers (If needed) If you wnt to use your mhine with multiple omputers on the network, instll MFL-Pro Suite on eh omputer. Go to step 23 on pge 23. Also see step 20- on pge 21 efore you instll. This produt inludes PC liense for up to 2 Users. This liense supports the instlltion of the MFL-Pro Suite inluding SnSoft PperPort 11SE on up to 2 PCs on the network. If you wnt to use more thn 2 PCs with SnSoft PperPort 11SE instlled, plese uy the Brother NL-5 pk whih is multiple PC liense greement pk for up to 5 dditionl users. 26 Wired Network Mintosh For Wired Network Interfe Users (For M OS X or greter) 20 Before you instll Mke sure your mhine is onneted to the power nd your Mintosh is ON. You must e logged on with Administrtor rights. Importnt For M OS X to users, upgrde to M OS X or greter.
