Buy the pproprite interfe le for the interfe you wnt to use (Network). To ensure sfe opertion the supplied plug must e inserted only into stndrd power outlet tht is properly grounded through the stndrd eletril wiring. Non grounded equipment my use n eletril shok hzrd, nd my use exessive eletril noise rdition. USB le It is reommended to use USB 2.0 le (Type A/B) tht is no longer thn 2 metres. Network le Use stright-through Ctegory5 (or greter) twisted-pir le for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fst Ethernet Network. 2

3 2 Remove the pking mteril from the mhine d Lift the elsti nd off the drum. IMPORTANT DO NOT onnet the AC power ord yet. Remove the pking tpe from the outside of the mhine nd the film overing the snner glss. Open the front over. e Pull the pper strip to remove the protetive mteril s shown in the illustrtion. Remove the Sili Pk from the inside of the mhine. f Tke out the drum unit nd toner rtridge ssemly. CAUTION DO NOT et the Sili Pk. Plese disrd. If ingested seek medil ttention immeditely. 3

4 g Gently shke it from side to side severl times to distriute the toner evenly inside the ssemly. 3 Instll the Hndset Connet the urled hndset ord to the mhine nd the other end to the hndset. h Put the drum unit nd toner rtridge ssemly k in the mhine. 4 Lod pper in the pper try Pull the pper try ompletely out of the mhine. i Close the front over of the mhine. 4

5 While pressing the green pper-guide relese lever, slide the pper guides to fit the pper size you re loding in the try. Mke sure tht the guides re firmly in the slots. 1 1 d Fn the stk of pper well to void pper jms nd misfeeds. Put pper in the try nd mke sure: The pper is elow the mximum pper mrk ( ). Over filling the pper try will use pper jms. The side to e printed on must e fe down. The pper guides touh the sides of the pper so it will feed orretly. e 5 Connet Put the pper try firmly k in the mhine. Mke sure tht it is ompletely inserted into the mhine. the power ord nd telephone line Connet the AC power ord to the mhine, nd then plug it into n eletril soket. Turn on the mhine s power swith. Connet the telephone line ord. Connet one end of the telephone line ord to the soket on the mhine mrked LINE nd the other end to telephone wll soket. 5

6 IMPORTANT The telephone line ord MUST e onneted to the soket on the mhine mrked LINE. WARNING The mhine must e grounded using n erthed plug. Sine the mhine is grounded through the eletril soket, you n protet yourself from potentilly hzrdous eletril onditions on the telephone network y keeping the power ord onneted to your mhine when you onnet it to telephone line. Similrly, you n protet yourself when you wnt to move your mhine y disonneting the telephone line first nd then the power ord. If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone, onnet it s shown elow. Before you onnet the externl telephone, remove the protetive p from the EXT. jk on the mhine. 1 If you re shring one telephone line with n externl telephone nswering mhine, onnet it s shown elow. 7 7 Choose Reeive Mode Reeive Mode By ftory defult, the ftory setting of Reeive Mode is Fx Only. Your mhine will utomtilly reeive ny fxes tht re sent to it. There re four reeive modes of this mhine s elow. LCD Disply Fx Only Fx/Tel Mnul Externl TAD Ftory Defult Ring Dely Ring Dely: 4 times Fx detetion: on Ring Dely: 4 times Time: 30 seonds Mode Funtion Desription Fx Only Eh ll reognized s fx nd send fx signl. However, you n nswer the ll within the numer of rings. Fx/Tel Automtilly determine whether the inoming ll is telephone or fx lls. Non-Fx ll will mke fst doulering to inform you nswer the phone. Ftory setting of Ring Dely is 4 (0-10 times ville, plese see Ring Dely in the Bsi User s Guide). After ringing 4 times, the fx mhine send fx-reeiving signls utomtilly; Tip: If your mhine is onneting n externl nswering phone devie, nd often use it to nswer inoming lls, you ould set the ring time through 4 to 6 times. Within the reommended ringing times, you n use the externl nswering phone devie to nswer nd tlk. 1 Ftory setting of Ring Dely is 4 (0-10 times ville, plese see Ring Dely in the Bsi User s Guide). Ftory setting of F/T ring time ( fst doule-ring) is 30 seonds (20, 30, 40, 70 seonds ville, plese see F/T Ring Time in the Bsi User s Guide). Aording to inoming ll fter the fx mhine rings 4 times: 1) For the fx ll, send fx reeived signl; 2) For the telephone ll, mke fst doule-ring,witing for you nswer the phone. Mnul Externl TAD Mhine doesn t reognize eh ll, only s ommon phone ll tht you need to determine fter nswering the phone. The externl nswering mhine (TAD) utomtilly nswers every ll. Voie messges re stored on the externl TAD. Fx messges re printed. Tip: If your mhine is onneting n externl nswering phone devie, you ould set the ringing time through 4 to 6 times to nswer the ll. 1 Answering the ll, or if the ller wnts to send you fx, press Strt utton (under esy mode) to reeive fxes. Tip: If your mhine is onneting n externl nswering phone devie, you n use the externl nswering phone devie to nswer nd tlk. 1 Use this mode if you hve onneted n externl nswering mhine to your mhine. The TAD setting works only with n externl nswering mhine. : Ring Dely nd F/T Ring Time do not work in this setting. 1 If the ller wnts to send fx during ll or the ller sends you fx ll, plese press Strt utton (under esy mode) on the ontrol pnel of the mhine or press l 5 1 keys on the externl nswering phone devie (you hve to turn on the remote odes first, plese see Using remote ode in the Bsi User's Guide) to give fx reeiving signls. To set reeive mode follow the instrutions elow: Press Menu, 0, 1. Press or to hoose the reeive mode. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. For more detils, see Using reeive modes in the Bsi User's Guide. 7

8 8 Set the LCD ontrst (if needed) 9 Set the dte nd time If you re hving diffiulty reding the LCD, try hnging the ontrst setting. Press Menu, 1, 5. Press to inrese the ontrst. OR Press d to derese the ontrst. Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. The mhine displys the time, nd if you set up the sttion ID the dte nd time will e dded to eh fx you send. Press Menu, 0, 2, 1. d e f Enter the lst two digits of the yer on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Dte&Time Yer:2011 (e.g. Enter 1, 1 for 2011.) Enter the two digits for the month on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Dte&Time Month:03 (e.g. Enter 0, 3 for Mrh.) Enter the two digits for the dy on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Dte&Time Dy:25 (e.g. Enter 2, 5 for 25th.) Enter the time in 24-hour formt on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Dte&Time Time:15:25 (e.g. Enter 1, 5, 2, 5 for 3:25 P.M.) Press Stop/Exit. 8

9 10 Enter personl informtion (sttion ID) The mhine displys the dte nd time, nd if you set up the sttion ID, it will dd it to eh fx you send. Press Menu, 0, 3. Enter your fx numer (up to 20 digits) on the dil pd, nd then press OK. Sttion ID Fx: Enter your telephone numer (up to 20 digits) on the dil pd, nd then press OK. If your telephone numer nd fx numer re the sme, enter the sme numer gin. Sttion ID Tel: d Use the dil pd to enter your nme (up to 10 hrters for Chinese or 20 hrters for lphnumeri), nd then press OK. Nme: Enter & OK Key You n register your nme in Chinese or English in this mhine, you n swith etween the lphet input mode nd the Chinese-entry mode y pressing utton, the urrent input mode will pper in the lower right orner of LCD. Simplified Chinese n e onverted from Pinyin entry. See the following hrt for entering your nme. If you need to enter hrter tht is on the sme key s the lst hrter, press to move the ursor to the right. If you entered letter inorretly nd wnt to hnge it, press d or to move the ursor to the inorret hrter, press Cler. Press key e One time 11 Press Stop/Exit. Fx Trnsmission Report Your Brother mhine is equipped with Trnsmission Verifition Report tht n e used s onfirmtion tht you sent fx. This report lists the nme or fx numer of the reeiving prty, the dte, time, nd durtion of the trnsmission, the numer of pges trnsmitted, nd whether or not the trnsmission ws suessful. If you hve Pulse dilling servie (rotry), you need to hnge the dilling mode. Press Menu, 0, 4. Press or to hoose Pulse (or Tone). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit. 9

10 13 Set the telephone line omptiility If you re onneting the mhine to VoIP servie (over the Internet) you need to hnge the omptiility setting. If you re using n nlogue telephone line you n skip this step. Press Menu, 2, 0, 1. Press or to hoose Bsi(for VoIP). Press OK. Press Stop/Exit..14 Dil Prefix The dil prefix setting will utomtilly dil predefined numer efore every fx numer you dil. For exmple: If your phone system requires 9 to dil n outside numer this setting will utomtilly dil 9 for every fx you send. Press Menu, 0, 6. Enter the prefix numer (up to 5 digits) on the dil pd, nd then press OK. You n use the numer 0 to 9, #, l nd!. (PressHook/Hold to disply!.) You nnot use! with ny other numers or hrters. If your telephone system requires timed rek rell (hookflsh), press Hook/Hold to enter the rek. If the pulse diling mode is on, # nd! re not ville to use. Press Stop/Exit. 10

Before instlltion, if the USB le is onneted to the omputer, the Found New Hrdwre Wizrd dilog ox will utomtilly show, plese nel it to lose the sreen. Put the instlltion CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. If the model nme sreen ppers, hoose your mhine. If the lnguge sreen ppers, hoose your lnguge. If the Brother sreen does not pper utomtilly, go to My Computer (Computer), doule-lik the CD-ROM ion, nd then doule-lik strt.exe. Clik Initil Instlltion nd then Instll MFL-Pro Suite. Clik Yes if you ept the liense greements. If the instlltion does not ontinue utomtilly, open the top menu gin y ejeting nd then reinserting the CD-ROM or doule-lik the strt.exe progrm from the root folder, nd ontinue from step to instll MFL-Pro Suite. For Windows Vist nd Windows 7 users, when the User Aount Control sreen ppers, lik Allow or Yes. Go to step 17 on pge 16. If this sreen ppers lik OK. 18 Downlod nd instll Presto! PgeMnger When Presto! PgeMnger is instlled OCR pility is dded to Brother ControlCenter2. You n esily sn, shre nd orgnize photos nd douments using Presto! PgeMnger. Enter nme for your Mintosh in Disply Nme up to 15 hrters long nd lik OK. Go to d. On the Brother Support sreen, lik Presto! PgeMnger nd follow the on-sreen instrutions. If you wnt to use the mhine s SCAN key to sn over the network, you must hek the Register your omputer with the "Sn To" funtion on the mhine ox. The nme you enter will pper on the mhine s LCD when you press (SCAN) nd hoose sn option. (For more informtion, see Network Snning in the Softwre User's Guide.) d When this sreen ppers, lik Next. The instlltion of MFL-Pro Suite is now omplete. Go to step 18 on pge Instll MFL-Pro Suite on dditionl omputers (if needed) If you wnt to use your mhine with multiple omputers on the network, instll MFL-Pro Suite on eh omputer. 20 For Network Users (MFC-7860DN only) We Bsed Mngement (we rowser) Print the Network Configurtion Report The Brother print server is equipped with we server tht llows you to monitor its sttus or hnge some of its onfigurtion settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Trnsfer Protool). The defult User Nme is dmin nd the defult pssword is ess. You n use we rowser to hnge this pssword. We reommend Mirosoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or greter) or Firefox 3.0 (or greter) for Windows nd Sfri 3.0 (or greter) for Mintosh. Plese lso mke sure tht JvSript nd ookies re lwys enled in whihever rowser you use. To use we rowser, you will need to know the IP ddress of the print server. The IP ddress of the print server is listed on the Network Configurtion Report. Open your rowser. Type s IP ddress/ into your rowser s ddress r (where mhine s IP ddress is the IP ddress of the printer or the print server nme). For exmple You n print the Network Configurtion Report to onfirm the urrent network settings. Turn the mhine on nd wit until it is in the Redy stte. Press Menu, 5, 6. d Press Strt. The mhine will print the urrent network settings. Press Stop/Exit. Restore the network settings to ftory defult To restore ll network settings of the internl Print/Sn server to ftory defult, plese follow the steps elow.
