8 Chapter 1. Introdution The IBM Series/I 4999 Battery Bakup Unit (Figure 1-1) supplies and monitors a utility power to the IBM Series/l 4955 or 4953 Proessor units and, when the utility power is inadequate, it substitutes d-to-a inverted bakup power from a ustomer-supplied battery. This bakup power prevents the loss of main storage data during a utility power failure. The IBM Series/I 4999 Battery Bakup Unit will be referred to as the "4999" in the remainder of this doument. Two models of the 4999 are available: Model 1-50/60 Hz utility power with a nominal voltage between 100V and 127V RMS Model 2-50/60 Hz utility power with a nominal voltage between 200V and 240V RMS Both models mount in one-half width of a 483 mm (19 in.) wide by 356 mm (14 in.) high rak position in the IBM 4997 Rak Enlosure. The mounting requires a rak mounting fixture. The battery and battery harger are supplied by the ustomer to meet the speifi requirements of his appliation "I Figure 1-1. 9 General Desription The 4999 an power only one proessor and its assoiated ooling fans and is not designed to bak up an I/O expansion unit or any I/O devies. However, the 4999 an support a proessor ontaining any ombination of the following: 125W or 300W power supply Up to 128K bytes of storage A full omplement of I/O feature ards During normal operation, the 4999 supplies a utility power diretly to the proessor (Figure 1-2). If the a utility power dips below approximately 80 volts (160 volts for Model 2) or is lost ompletely, the 4999 d-to-a inverter is ativated and the transfer iruitry supplies square-wave a power to the proessor. If the a utility power returns before the battery apaity has been exeeded, the 4999 swithes the proessor bak to the a utility power soure. If the battery apaity is depleted, the 4999 will swith the proessor bak to the a utility power soure (whether the voltage has returned or not) and enter an offline ondition (the Offline indiator lights). 11 Customer Requirements Battery and Battery Charger The ustomer-supplied battery should be a sealed lead-aid or nikel-admium type designed for use near eletroni equipment. The battery should have a apaity of 40-ampere hours minimum at a one-hour disharge rate. A 12-volt d lead-aid, sealed-ell automotive battery rated at 100 ampere hour minimum is reommended. A battery of this type an power the 4999 from 20 to 60 minutes (depending on load, temperature, ondition of battery, et.). The battery harger has to be seleted to fit the ustomer's appliation. Obviously, it should be apable of maintaining the battery at a suffiient level to support the proessor as needed. Normally, a 30-hour reharge rate is suffiient, but if utility power experienes more interruptions than normal, a harger with a 10-hour rate may be required. The harger should have a 3-ondutor ord and be Underwriter's Laboratory (U.L.) approved. A harger whih operates from Va may be used for a 4999 Model 2. Environment and Battery Wiring Environmental and battery wiring requirements are detailed in IBM Series/l Installation Manual-Physial Planning, GA Detailed installation instrutions are shipped with the Instant Power Off (IPO) Interlok A mating able is provided with the 4999 to onnet it from the 3-position IPO onnetor (Figure 1-3) to the IBM 4997 Rak Enlosure utility power assembly. This abling provides IPO apability. If the 4999 is not installed in an IBM 4997 rak, provisions for IPO must be made. This an be aomplished by the ustomer integrating the able into his IPO system by onneting it to a single set of I-ampere, 16-volt d non-indutive ontats whih open when IPO is invoked. Detailed IPO installation instrutions are shipped with the GA

12 Chapter 2. Funtional Desription Desription To provide bakup should a line-voltage dip or loss our, the 4999 must perform a and d voltage sensing and swithing. These funtions are desribed briefly in the following setions. The funtion bloks shown in Figure 2-1 are number keyed to the desriptions. AC Power AC power D is supplied to the 4999 and the proessor power supply when (1) the Utility Power On/Off swith is On, (2) the IPO interlok is losed, and (3) the Reset button is pressed. With these onditions met, the Utility Power indiator lights. One the proessor power supply is energized, a proessor-on signal rj is sent bak to the DC Power When the 70-ampere iruit breaker is losed, battery power is available at the inverter II for bakup when needed. Line Voltage Sensing The 4999 monitors a line voltage for any drops below a set point of 80 volts ± 0.5 volts (160 volts ± 1 volt for Model 2) II. If a drop of this magnitude ours, the 4999 disonnets a line voltage and swithes the proessor to d-to-a inverted bakup power. The energy stored in the proessor power supply is suffiient to arry the proessor while the 4999 is swithing it to bakup power. The proessor will remain on battery bakup power for at least one-half seond. 70 Amp iruit breaker Bakup power indiator Inverter a t square wave 7:1 / /IPO / mterlok 1/ Utility power I C on/off swith / I II / I I D Utility power II II IJ Low battery voltage detetor Offline detetion a set point and detetion a failure r (to proessor) Control logi Standby Low battery Offline On battery Proessor power supply on Une transfer Reset key relay Utility power II indiator aline Proessor power ord plugs into this outlet. 13 Battery Voltage Sensing The 4999 ontinuously monitors the battery voltage II and if it drops below 11.2 volts ± 1.8%, the Low Battery indiator lights. If a battery voltage drop to 10.8 volts ± 1 % is deteted II ' the Offline indiator lights. If the 4999 is supplying d-to-a inverted bakup power to the proessor when the Offline indiator lights, the proessor is returned to the utility a line. This reversion to the utility a line power ours whether the line voltage has returned or not. If the utility a line voltage has not returned, the proessor automatially initiates a shutdown sequene. After an Offline indiation, the 4999 annot swith the proessor to bakup power until the battery has reovered to 12.5 volts +3%, -2% and the Reset button has been pushed. On-Battery Mode The 4999 is in the on-battery mode while it is supplying bakup power to the proessor. This mode is indiated when the On-Battery indiator is lit. While in the on-battery mode, the 4999 monitors the battery and a line voltages. If the battery power dissipates to a low enough level, the Offline indiator lights as detailed in the previous setion. When the 4999 senses that the utility a line voltage has returned to 87.5 volts +0, -2.5 volts (I 75 volts +0, -5 volts for Model 2) II, it swithes the proessor bak to a line power. While the 4999 is in the on-battery mode, it ontinuously sends an a failure signal iii to the proessor to maintain an "a warning" ondition. This signal produes a lass interrupt in the proessor by ausing PSW bit 15 to remain on as long as the power is being supplied by the battery. Auxiliary Transfer Contats A single-pole double-throw relay ontat set that is synhronous with the transfer iruitry shown in Figure 2-1 is available for the ustomer's use. The relay ontats are wired to the srew-type terminal blok at the rear of the unit. The relay ontats are rated for a 5 ampere, 24 volt d non-indutive load. The terminal board positions are: Terminal 1 : Terminal 2: Terminal 3: Normally losed Common (movable) Normally open The relay ontats transfer, in either diretion, within 15 milliseonds of the transition of the a failure signal. Controls and Indiators The ontrols and indiators shown in Figure 2-2 are loated on the front panel (onsole). Utility Power On/Off Swith In the On position, this roker swith applies a power to the 4999, the proessor reeptale, and the Utility Power indiator. When in the Off position, it removes all a power from the 4999, turning off the Utility Power indiator. Battery Ciruit Breaker The 70-ampere Battery Ciruit Breaker protets the proessor by automatially removing the battery power if exessive urrent is drawn. When the iruit breaker is pushed in, battery power is applied to the inverter, detetion, and ontrol iruitry and the Battery Power indiator is lit. When pulled out to the disonnet position, all battery power is removed and the Battery Power indiator goes off. 14 Reset Pushbutton The Reset swith, a momentary pushbutton, resets the 4999 ontrol logi to the Standby mode after a power is turned on during initial startings or after the battery has reovered from an offline ondition (see "Offline Indiator" in this setion). Utility Power Indiator The Utility Power indiator lights when the Utility Power swith is plaed in the On position and a line voltage is available to the Bakup Power Indiator The Bakup Power indiator lights when the Battery Ciruit Breaker is pushed in and battery power is available. Standby Indiator The Standby indiator lights when the following onditions are satisfied: The Utility Power swith is On. The proessor power supply is On. The a line voltage is at least 80 volts ± 0.5 volts (160 volts ± 1 volt for Model 2). The battery voltage has not dropped below 10.8 volts ± 1 % ausing an offline ondition. On-Battery Indiator The On-Battery indiator lights when battery power is being supplied to the proessor via the d-to-a inverter. This onbattery mode ours within 15 milliseonds of a low-voltage detetion and lasts for at least 0.5 seond. The on-battery mode is exited when the line voltage reahes 87.5 volts +0.0, -2.5 volts, (175 volts +0.0, -5 volts for Model 2) provided no offline ondition has ourred (see "Low Battery and Offline Indiators"). Low Battery Indiator During the on-battery mode, both the a line and battery voltages are monitored. If the battery drops below 11.2 volts ± 1.8%, the Low Battery indiator lights. The indiator remains lit until the battery has reovered to 12.5 volts +2%, -3%. If the battery voltage drops to below 10.8 volts ± 1 % and adequate a voltage is not available, the 4999 automatially enters an offline mode. Offline Indiator The Offline indiator lights when the battery voltage drops below 10.8 volts ± 1 %. If the battery voltage drop ours while the 4999 is in the on-battery mode, the proessor is swithed to a line power. If adequate a power is not available, the proessor automatially powers down. If the battery voltage drop ours while the 4999 is in the standby mode, the proessor remains on a line power. If this a power is lost, the proessor is powered down. The Offline indiator remains lit until: 1. The battery voltage has reovered to 12 volts +3%,-2%. 2. The Reset pushbutton is pressed. Funtional Desription 2-3
