3 UAE at A Glance Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Presdent of UAE Federation formed in 1971 by seven emirates known as Abu Dhabi (the largest), Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al- Khaimah, and Umm al- Qaiwain. Geography Area: 82,880 sq. km. (30,000 sq. mi.); about the size of Maine. Major cities: Capital--Abu Dhabi; Dubai. Terrain: Largely desert with some agricultural areas. Climate: Hot, humid, low annual rainfall. The UAE had 8 million people at the end of School enrollment 100% Natural resources: Oil and natural gas. GPD- Per capita (PPP) :$48,500 ranking 11 comparison to the world.

7 What is ANKABUT? 15th May 2011 Ankabut is the United Arab Emirates Advanced Research and Education Network (NREN). It offers educational and research networks connectivity to other education networks around the world. Ankabut also co-operates on a national, GCC, regional and international arena representing the UAE in conferences, exhibitions and forums. H. H. Sh. Nahyan Minster of Higher Education

8 Funding of Ankabut Current funding Future funding TRA- ICT fund and Kustar will fund the ANKABUT project for the initial five years of operation During this time,kustar will manage ANKABUT. Beyond the 5 years, ANKABUT will be spun-off as an independent organization with ownership stakes held by its users. 8 8

Placed an Internet1 link in the Sharjah Router Has connected/connecting 56 academic 1Gbps Access links. Has created DNS, NTP, and Web hosting services. Is implementing a network wide Video Conf. MCU
