You are the Star of the Show Slides are designed to support the speaker & supplement the presentation Slides are not the star of the show since people came to listen to you Don t get derailed by unnecessarily complicated slides The less crowded your slides, the more powerful your visual message will become
3 2. Limit Bullet Points & Text A page should have maximum 6 logically related bullets Each slide will take 1 minute to present prepare as many slights as # of minutes Each bullet should have maximum 2 lines Best slides may have no text at all just pictures and narration Never turn your back on the audience and read text from the slide word for word
4 3. Limit Slide Transitions Use slide transitions cautiously Don t animate bullets on every slide Stick to professional (e.g. evening TV news broadcast) Simple Wipe Left-to-Right might be good for a bullet point, but more complicated Move or Fly might be too tedious

Use High-Quality Pictures & Graphics Use high-quality graphics including photos Take your own high-quality photographs purchase professional stock photography watch the copyright issues A e - v e - e - L e - Avoid using Clip Art or other cartoonish line art your audience has probably seen it before use images of people to impress them Again, use little (or no) text!!!

9 5. Have a Visual Theme Create strong impact via consistent visual themes in your presentation Your audience expects a unique presentation with new content Templates may suggest that your presentation is prepackaged Make your own background templates tailored to your needs
10 Buy Professional Templates On-line (for example:
11 6. Use Appropriate Charts Ask yourself, How much detail do I need? May display your data in graphic form Pie Charts: Used to show percentages Contrast important slice with color or by exploding it Vertical Bar Charts: Used to show changes in quantities Best if you limit the bars to 4-8 Line Charts: Used to demonstrate trends The arrow comes in later to underscore the point

Use Proper Colors Colors can increase interest & improve learning conception Cool colors (i.e. blue and green) work best for backgrounds Warm colors (i.e. orange & red) work best for objects in foreground If presenting in a dark room, use dark background if lights are on, a white background with dark text

Choose Suitable Fonts Use same font set throughout your presentation with min 28 point size, typically 32 pt Know the difference between font types Serif fonts (e.g. Times New Roman) Printouts are easier to read at small point sizes, Has problems with lower resolution projectors Sans-Serif fonts (e.g. Helvetica or Arial) Best for PowerPoint presentations text can be read at the back of the room
14 9. Use Related Video or Audio Using video clips promotes cognition Use video clips to enhance interest of audience by changing the pace Audio clips (e.g. interviews) can also be used Avoid cheesy sound effects in your presentations such as applause at slide transitions
15 10. Spend Time in the Slide Sorter You can see logical flow of your presentation better in slide sorter view where you Can break slides into more slides to make presentation fluent Can notice irrelevant visual data to be removed to increase visual clarity
