5 1 - Introduction Training Guide Objectives 1 - Introduction Training Guide Objectives This manual presents the basic key concepts concerning WorkXplore features. The main goal of this manual is to provide users with the tools (knowledge and ideas) that may be applied to specific problems that they may encounter when analyzing CAD parts. To complete this information, you may turn to the online help available in the application itself. At the end of this training guide, you should be able to: Import and open any CAD part using native interfaces, Display the CAD model in an optimum way, Take all possible measurements, Annotate the CAD model, Create basic entities, Perform more advanced analysis, Create scenes and play animations, Share information with coworkers. This manual has several files which show how to use different functions. 6 1 - Introduction WorkXplore Environment Graphic User Interface - Main Areas 1 Ribbon. It contains toolboxes with the common functions that you may have to perform in a chronological order. Some of them can also be found in the Creation, Edition and Display tabs. 2 Part Manager with vertical tabs. You can use it to browse your computer to open/import your CAD part, manage components in the case of an assembly, create scenes and manage layers. 3 Basic display functions: zoom, predefined views in the X, Y and Z axis, views. 4 System Help: when activating a new function, this small frame shows explanations on how to use it. 7 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files The application reads standard and native 2D/3D CAD files originating from most of the CAD applications. This includes: Catia V5 Catia V4 Unigraphics Parasolid Pro/E Solidworks Solidedge Cadds IGES STEP Unisurf STL (binary and ASCII) WorkNC geometry Acis WorkNC toolpaths ISO toolpaths DXF DWG Inventor JT The user interface allows importing several CAD files from various CAD applications in one single environment and building virtual unified prototypes or 3D models. After importing your CAD file, you can analyze it and save it in the application format (A3D extension) and share it with others Importing one or more CAD Files Once you have launched the application, you can start by importing a CAD model in a native format. This is done very easily using the Explorer tab in the Part Manager. 1. Click on the Explorer tab on the left in the Part Manager. This automatically shows the file browser and all files to be found in each directory. File Browser 2. In the upper part of the Explorer tab, click on the directory where the part is stored on your disk. For our example, select the Training directory. For training, select an IGS file (e.g. wxplore_exa_01.igs) and drag & drop it onto the Viewing Area. You can also double click on the file in the Part Manager. Since the file you want to import is an IGS file, the Import 3D dialog box is automatically displayed, allowing you to define the triangulation tolerance for the import as well as the type of entities you want to import: Import 3D 4. 9 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files The model is imported with the filters and layers defined in the initial CAD program. You can now view the CAD model under different orientations, make measurements, analyze it, etc. Importing Several Models in the Same Viewing Area You can also import several models into the same Viewing Area, e.g. to build different prototypes, assemblies. This is done very easily in the Explorer tab. Filtering Files The Explorer tab contains a drop-down list that allows you to filter the CAD files to be imported according to their types. Filtering CAD Files in the Explorer Tab After opening the first model, activate the Import option and double click on each additional file(s) that you want to import. Import When the Import option is deactivated, press and hold down the [Alt] key then drag and drop a new model to import it into the same Viewing Area. Import Option The Import option allows you to build complete assemblies. Direct Opening If you do not want to review the import options when opening a native file, activate the Automatic option. 10 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files Importing Several Models in Separate Viewing Areas The application allows you to open various models in separate Viewing Areas in different tabs so that you can work on several files at the same time, compare models, etc. 1. Once your first model is imported (e.g. wxplore_exa_01.igs), deactivate the Import option. 2. Double click on another file in the Explorer tab. For our example, select the wxplore_exa_02.a3d file. The file is displayed in a new Viewing Area indicated by the second tab. CAD File in a New Tab 3. Close the different tabs to close the CAD files. Importing Files using the Windows Explorer 1. Deactivate the Import option. 2. Open a Windows explorer. 3. Browse the Training directory of the application. 4. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key then click on the wxplore_exa_03.a3d and the wxplore_exa_04.a3d files. 5. Drag and drop your selection from the Windows explorer into the Viewing Area. Files Imported into 2 Viewing Areas Activate the Import option and repeat this procedure. The 2 files are now imported in the same tab. Files Imported into the Same Viewing Area Drag & Drop WorkNC Workzones You can also use the drag & drop method to import WorkNC workzones into the application. It will automatically looks for the geometry files. Importing Compressed Files You can also drag & drop compressed files onto the Viewing Area. The application can read the following formats: ZIP, 7Z, RAR, BCZ (Siemens PLM ZIP). Drag & drop the training.zip file onto the Viewing Area. 12 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Saving a CAD Model Archive File Import Dialog Box You can choose the files to be imported from the compressed file by checking the boxes in front of their names. If you check the box of the parent folder, all the files will be imported. Click OK to validate. Depending on whether the Import option is activated or not, all the selected files are imported into a single Viewing Area or separate Viewing Areas Saving a CAD Model After importing a CAD model, you are free to save it in the application format with an.a3d extension. This will allow you to retrieve the file for further modifications and share it with coworkers who also use the application. You can also click on File > Save / Save as in the text menu bar Opening a WorkXplore File A WorkXplore file with an A3D extension can be opened in different manners. Click on the icon and browse your file Click on File > Open in the text menu bar, or select your file in the list of recent files. As for importing, you can also use the Explorer tab in the Part Manager or the Windows Explorer and drag and drop the file onto the Viewing Area. Each time you open a WorkXplore file, it is added to the Recent Files list Importing Invisible Entities When importing files with hidden entities, you have the possibility to select whether you want to import them as invisible entities, as shown entities or not to import them (default parameter). To have that choice, you need to deactivate the Automatic option. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_07.catpart file. 2. In the Import 3D dialog box, activate the Import Invisible Entities option. 3. Make sure that the Import option is deactivated and open the same file again. 6. This time, leave the Import Invisible Entities option deactivated in the Import 3D dialog box. 7. Click on the Import button. You should obtain two tabs with a different part display: Invisible Entities Imported and Visible Invisible Entities Not Imported You can also import the invisible entities and keep their invisible status: 1. Open the same file again. 2. In the Import 3D dialog box, activate the Import Invisible Entities option. 3. Make sure that the Leave Invisible option is activated. 4. Click on the Import button. 5. Click on the icon in the Show/Hide toolbox or in the toolbar on the right side of the user interface. This allows you to switch the display between shown and hidden entities. 15 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Entity Selection and Selection Filters 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Selecting entities or faces is required by a wide range of functions in the application. Selection filters will help you to select the appropriate entities. These selections often imply that you define auxiliary entities such as points, vectors and planes Entity Selection and Selection Filters A wide range of functions requires the selection of one or several entities and, in certain cases, face selection. Pre-Selection Functions which require a selection operation have a pre-selection indication showing the concerned elements. Pre-selection depends on the type of point to be selected, as defined in the Point Definition dialog box. Standard Mouse Click Selection If a selection is required, the mouse cursor in the Viewing Area takes the shape of a small hand Selection dialog box is displayed. and the Entity Click on the entity or the required face to select it. Selected entities or faces change their color according to the selection color defined in the Application Parameters. To cancel the selection of an entity or face, click on it again. The entity or face display switches back to the original color. 16 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Names All Window None Invert Entity Selection and Selection Filters The first function icon line in this toolbox defines what is selected. This function allows you to select all visible entities. This function allows you to deselect all visible entities. This function allows you to invert the selection: selected entities are deselected and not selected entities are selected. This function allows you to select entities by their names. When you activate this function, a dialog box is displayed which allows you to enter the character string you are looking for. It is possible to use the wildcards [*] and [?] where [*] replaces any character string and [?] a single character. The second function icon line defines how the selection is made. This function allows you to select entities by a user-defined rectangular selection window. 1. Click on the first point of the selection window. 2. Drag the mouse diagonally and click on the second point of the selection window. X X X X This function allows you to select entities by a user-defined polygon. Polygon 1. Click on the first point of the polygon. 2. Click successively on other points to form the polygon. 3. Validate the polygon. or Inside This switch button allows you to define whether the entities are selected inside or outside the selection window or polygon. X Outside inside Strictly This switch button allows you to define whether the entities to be selected must strictly be inside the selection window or polygon. If Crossing is active, all the entities which are partially included are selected. X or Crossing Any of the selection methods described above selects all unselected entities, cancels the selection of all previously selected entities. 17 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Filter Entity Selection and Selection Filters Selecting this option displays the Filter by dialog box, which allows you to define which entities are taken into account for selection. X By default, all entities are selected. Clicking on the All button selects all the entities. Clicking on the None button unselects all the entities. Clicking on the Invert button swaps selected and unselected entities. To select specific entities, proceed as follows: Click on the None button. Check the boxes, which correspond to the entities to be selected and click on OK to validate. Click on the All icon to select all the entities of the same type. Layer The settings apply only to the current selection and are reset at each new selection. X This function allows you to select the layers that are taken into account during selection. By default, all the layers are included. The following dialog box is displayed when you select the function. Tick the layer checkboxes for which you want to select entities and click on Close. 18 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Point Definition or N Color This function allows you to choose a reference color for selection. This color is then displayed in the color case next to the function icon. By default, no color is active, which is represented by an N in the color case. 1. Activate the function by clicking on the color icon. 2. Select an entity whose color you want to define as reference color. Only the entities with this specific color will be selected. To cancel this color filter, double click on the color case. If you click on the down arrow next to the color icon, the following drop-down menu is displayed. The following options are available: By Selection: This option works as described above. Click on an entity to define a reference color. Color Selection: This option displays the extended color selection dialog box which allows you to select one of the available standard and user-defined colors. Cancel Filter by Color: Just like a double click on the color case, selecting this option cancels the reference color selection Point Definition A point is the most simple and most important entity in the application. It is the basis for any construction or measurement. Consequently, its definition must be quick and easy. By default, if point selection is required, a mouse click makes the application search for characteristic points. These points are the vertexes on models or the extremities or middle points for complementary entities. As these points are not sufficient, the following dialog box, offering advanced point selection functions, is systematically displayed as soon as point selection is required. Point Definition Dialog Box This dialog box contains a number of function icons, which allow you to define the required point. Available Options On Screen Selection This point is a projection on the screen plane passing through the origin of the mouse cursor when you select a point. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [E] key. 19 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Point Definition Absolute Coordinates Defines a point by entering its coordinates with respect to the origin of the current axis system. When you select this function, the following dialog box is displayed: Enter the X, Y and Z coordinates of the point to be defined and click on OK to validate. Relative Coordinates Defines a point by entering an offset value with respect to the coordinate values of the most recently defined point. When you select this function, the following dialog box is displayed: Enter the offset value for the X, Y and Z coordinates with respect to the most recently defined point and click on OK to validate. Circle Center Defines a point in the center of a selected circle or circular surface boundary of the model. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [C] key. Intersection Defines a point at the intersection of two selected straight segments. Between two Points with Distance Ratio Defines a point between two points and by defining a ratio for the distance between these points. For example, if you want to define a midpoint, select two points and enter 0.5 in the ratio dialog box, which is displayed. Point on a Curve Defines a point at a selected position on a curve. Point on Mesh Vertex Defines a point at a selected vertex of a mesh model. Point on a Face Defines a point, which is the perpendicular projection of the mouse cursor position on the screen onto a face of the model. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [F] key. Point at Same X Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same Y and Z coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected X coordinate. Point at Same Y Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same X and Z coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected Y coordinate. Virtual Point Sometimes, point definition needs an intermediary step. If this button is highlighted, the selected point is temporary and its coordinates are saved. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [I] key Plane Definition Planes play a significant role among the application entities. Plane definition or selection is necessary in a large number of functions. That is why the advanced plane definition functions have been grouped in the following dialog box which is displayed each time a plane entity is required. Plane Definition Dialog Box Define Plane Position The two icons on the left have a particular function. They allow you to define the position of a plane with respect to a reference plane. Positions a parallel plane at a selected point with respect to the previously selected or created reference plane. Positions a plane at an offset distance with respect to the previously selected or created reference plane. Proceed as follows: 1. Select the required option. 2. Define the reference plane. 3. According to the selected function, either select a passing point or enter an offset value in the dialog box which is displayed. The plane is created automatically. Define the Plane The following function icons allow you to define a plane. Defines the XY plane of the origin axis system. Defines the XZ plane of the origin axis system. Defines the YZ plane of the origin axis system. Defines a plane by selecting two line type entities. Defines a plane by selecting three points. Defines the YZ plane of the local axis system, if any. Defines a perpendicular plane tangent to a selected point on a straight segment or polyline. Defines a plane by selecting an existing plane. Plane Preview If the plane is correctly defined, it is represented as a transparent square in selection color. Plane Preview See also... " Validating/Cancelling a Function" on page Vector Definition Some functions need the definition or selection of a vector. Each time a vector is required, the following dialog box is displayed. Vector Definition Dialog Box This dialog box contains a number of buttons, which allow you to define the vector and its direction. Available Options Inv X Y Z This button allows you to invert the vector direction. Defines a vector in the X axis of the local axis system, if any. 22 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Copying and Pasting Entities Dxyz Selecting this option allows you to define the XYZ coordinate values of the vector. When you select this option, the following dialog box is displayed. Enter the desired coordinate values and click on OK to validate. 2Pts Defines a vector by selecting two points. When you select this option, the Point Definition dialog box is displayed. ox Defines a vector in the X axis of the origin axis system. oy Defines a vector in the Y axis of the origin axis system. oz Defines a vector in the Z axis of the origin axis system. Cyl Defines a vector by selecting the axis of a cylindrical face. PPln Defines a vector, which is perpendicular to a plane. When you select this option, the Plane Definition dialog box is displayed. Procedure Proceed as follows: 1. Select the required option. 2. Define the vector. 3. If required, invert the direction by selecting the Inv button. 4. Validate Copying and Pasting Entities You can copy entities in the current file or in a different file. To illustrate this, open the Switch.igs and Screw_chc.igs files in separate tabs. Files Imported in 2 Tabs 1. Activate the tab containing the Screw_chc.igs file. 2. Click on the Edition tab. 3. Click on the Copy button in the Copy/Paste toolbox. 23 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Validating/Cancelling a Function 5. Activate the tab containing the Switch.igs file. 6. Click on the Paste button in the Copy/Paste toolbox. You can also press the [Ctrl] + [V] keys. You should obtain the following result: Copied Entities Validating/Cancelling a Function Numerous functions prompt the user to validate his actions or to cancel them if the desired result is not attained. If a function needs to be validated, the validate/cancel function triangle is displayed in the upper right corner of the Viewing Area. Validation triangle Validation Validate by clicking on the green tick. Validate by using the mouse button defined in the Application Parameters, if any. Press the [Enter] key of your keyboard. 25 4 - Viewing Display Modes 4 - Viewing Display Modes Display modes are available in the Visualization toolbox. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05a.a3d file. 2. Click on the Display icon in the Visualization toolbox and try the different display modes by clicking each of the available icons: Display Menu Wireframe Shading Shading + Wireframe Hidden Faces Selecting this option switches the display into wireframe mode. Selecting this option switches the display into shaded mode without surface boundaries display. Selecting this option switches the display into shaded mode with display of the surface boundaries. Selecting this option switches the display into a kind of wireframe mode. Whether hidden surface edges are displayed and how depends on the option selected in the Hidden Edges sub-menu. If hidden edges are not displayed, this option may be useful to make a screenshot of the part. Hidden Edges Selecting this option displays a sub-menu containing the following entries: Hidden, Dotted and Low Intensity. The selected option acts on the display of the surface boundaries if Shading + Wireframe or Hidden Faces has been selected as main display mode. Hidden: hides all the surface boundaries which are not visible. Dotted: all invisible surface boundaries are displayed as dotted lines. Low Intensity: all invisible surface boundaries are displayed as light colored lines. Smooth Edges Selecting this option allows you to show or hide the smooth edges of the model. If you hide them, only the sharp edges are shown. It is important to stitch the model before selecting this option. Copyright Sescoi International WXP_EN_2017R1 - WorkXplore

26 4 - Viewing Display Modes Texture Define Textures Selecting this option allows you apply the texture which has been previously defined in the Select a Texture dialog box to the part or model. Selecting this option allows to select the entities or models to which you want to apply a texture. The Select a Texture dialog box is then displayed in which you can select from a large number of textures. This option also allows you to define the default texture to be applied when you select the Texture option. Shading Quality Selecting this option displays a sub-menu containing the following entries : Ultra Fine (0.001), Fine (0.050), Normal (0.100), Rough (0.200), Very Rough (0.400). These options allows you to change the triangulation tolerance of the part display either for selected faces or models. In the following example the tolerance value is set to Fine on the left (yellow) faces and to Very Rough on the right (gray) faces. Applying a Display Mode to a Given Object You can select a different display mode for each surface of your model, but only if the model is exploded. You can also select a different display mode for each model in an assembly. Right click on the surface/model, go to the Display menu, then to the Rendering menu and select the relevant display mode. 27 4 - Viewing Display Modes There is another way of applying a display mode to a given surface/model: 1. Click on the Display icon in the Visualization toolbox. 2. Press and hold down the [Shift] key then click on the display mode that you want to apply. The Entity Selection dialog box is displayed. 3. Click on the surface(s) or model(s) to which you want to apply the display mode. Applying Different Textures to Various Models and/or Surfaces 1. Click on the Display icon and select the Define Textures option. 2. Select the faces/models to which you want to apply a texture. For our example, select the pink faces of the part. According to the texture applied, you can adjust the size of its patterns by using the Texture Density field. You can show or hide the edges on the part by activating/deactivating the Display Edges option. Texture Density and Color If you click on the Set Selected Texture as Default button, the active texture will be automatically applied when you use the Texture function. Click OK/Cancel to validate/cancel the texture definition and exit the dialog box. Cursor Guide The icon in the Orientation toolbar allows you to switch the display of the cursor guide in the Viewing Area on or off. A right click on this icon opens a dialog box that allows you to change the cursor display parameters. Grid This icon switches Grid display On or Off. A right click on this icon opens a dialog box that allows you to change the grid display parameters Using the Transparency Functions Transparency allows you to adjust the display transparency of the part. It may be set from 0 (totally transparent) to 1.0 (non transparent). Before using the function, we need to activate the High Transparency Quality option: 1. When working with a big part, you can hide entities to keep on the screen only the area to be processed. Hide/Show menu Click on the icon and click on the entities that you want to hide in the Viewing Area. Hidden Surfaces Several options are available for you to automatically hide a given type of entity. For example, if you wish to hide all polylines, select the Polylines option. Once you have hidden entities, you can switch between hidden and visible entities by clicking the icon. To make all entities visible again, click on the arrow under the icon and select Show all. Hide Menu When you click on the arrow of the icon, press and hold down the [Shift] key then click on a type of entity (points, lines, etc.). This allows you to show only the selected type of entity. Open the wxplore_exa_03.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Edition toolbox. Explode Menu Separating Faces from the Model 1. Select the Explode option from the Explode menu. 2. Click on the surfaces that you want to separate from the model and validate. Separating and Deleting Faces from the Model 1. Select the Explode and Delete option from the Explode menu. 2. Click on the surfaces that you want to separate and delete from the model and validate. The selected surfaces are automatically stored in the recycle bin. Click on the icon and select Merge Models. 2. Click on the surface(s) then on the model to which they must be merged. Or click on all the surfaces that have to be merged into a single object 3. Validate. Note that a model may have one single surface but that you must have at least two models for merging Deleting and Restoring Entities Open the wxplore_exa_01.igs file. Deleting Entities Let s suppose that you want to delete the pink surfaces from the part. 1. Click on the icon in the Edition toolbox. 2. Select the surfaces to be deleted. For our example, use the Color filter. 3. Validate. 39 5 - Editing Stitching Models Removing Entities Definitely Click on the arrow of the icon and select Empty the Recycle Bin definitely Stitching Models Model stitching allows connexity initialization between faces and determines faces representing exact shapes (cylinders, planes ) It also allows you to obtain consistent face orientation in order to obtain reliable results for volume calculation, draft angle and undercut analysis, etc. When you retrieve a model in the application, the faces are not necessarily orientated in the right direction. It is however essential to have consistent face orientation in order to obtain reliable results for the following functions: calculating the volume of a model, checking the model with respect to a point cluster, analyzing draft angle and undercut areas, analyzing the model thickness, etc. You can stitch a whole model automatically or stitch faces of a model manually. Manual stitching is mostly used to repair models. Open the CatiaV5-sample2.CATPart file. There are 3 ways of accessing the function: 1. In the Home tab, in the Edition toolbox, click on the icon and select Solid Stitching. Solid Stitching in the Edition Toolbox 2. In the Edition tab, click on the icon in the Transformations toolbox. In the 3 cases, the Solid Stitch dialog box is displayed and the model appears with different colors: Stitch Solid Dialog Box and Orientation Colors The gray color indicates the outside of the model. The orange color indicates the inside of the model, which means that the corresponding surfaces are not correctly orientated. The free edges are displayed in green on the model. As the model is not stitched, you can see in the dialog box that there are 856 free edges. You can hide them by deactivating the Show Free Edges option. You can also change their color by clicking on the green rectangle and selecting a new color. You can show dots on the free edges by activating the Display Dots on Free Edges option. You can also change their color by clicking on the blue rectangle and selecting a new color. You can adjust their size in the Dot Size field. Concatenate Faces This option allows concatenating the faces when stitching. For our example, activate this option. Surface Simplification This option is activated by default. It allows surfaces that form cylinders and planar surfaces to be easily recognized and grouped together. For our example, keep this option activated. Automatic Stitching Click on the icon to start stitching the selected model. Stitched Model and Orientated Surfaces The surfaces are now displayed in gray, which means that they are correctly orientated. There are no more free edges. You can click on the icon to invert the orientation of the surfaces. If you are working on an assembly with several models, you can click on the stitched. icon and select another model to be Click on the icon to exit the function. But you can also make a copy by translation by activating the Copy option, or make several copies by activating the Multiple Copy option. Click on the icon in the dialog box. The Rotation dialog box is displayed: Rotation Dialog Box By default, the Z axis of the origin axis system is activated. We are going to use the X axis of the origin axis system as rotation axis. 2. Click on the icon, then click on the ox button in the Vector Definition dialog box and validate. Note that you can also click on the icon and select a predefined angle measure to define the rotation angle. 3. Enter the rotation angle in the Angle field, 90 degrees for example. 4. Activate the Creation tab and click on the icon in the Axis Systems toolbox. 4. Create the following axis system by clicking on 2 lines (see and below) and validate. In the Transformations dialog box, click in the Saved Transformations drop-down list and click on the + symbol to add the set of transformations you have previously saved. Measurements Toolbox Measurements can be made on single entities (points, edges/curves, faces, etc.) or between two entities of same or different types. To illustrate this, we are going to use the wxplore_exa_05a.catpart CAD file Making Measurements on One Entity Click on the icon in the Measurements toolbox. The following dialog box is displayed. Automatic Measurement Dialog Box: One Entity Note the One Entity button is activated. Note that you can create a diameter measurement instead of a radius measurement: Activate the corresponding option in the dialog box before clicking on radii of the part. Note also that you can add a header and a footer to the current measurement label: Enter the header/footer information in the Header Text and Footer Text fields in the dialog box. You can use it to attach a text legend to any part entity. Note that several predefined annotations are available: you can quickly show the description of the entity you click, the Z level of a plane surface, the coordinates of a point, a radius, etc. Open the wxplore_exa_01.igs file. Entering a Free Text Consider that you want to share remarks about this entity with partners. For example, you want to know whether the opposite sides of the part must be symmetrical or not. 1. Click on the icon in the Annotations toolbox. 2. Click on the face where you want the label to point to. 3. Enter your text in the Annotation Text dialog box and click OK to validate. 58 6 - Analyzing Analysis Tools Annotations Analysis Tools You can use a wide range of analysis tools which allow you to make quotes, decide relevant machining strategies, control production, etc Dynamic Sectioning The dynamic sectioning function allows you to explore the inner part of a model and take measurements on the created sections. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_03.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox to start the function. This automatically activates the Dynamic Sectioning tab with all possible options. Dynamic Sectioning Tab Dynamic Section 1 By default, the visible section of the part appears as a solid. Click on the icon to switch the display between the surface model and the solid model. To use this function, you must first define the cutting plane that you want to use. The three-axis manipulator makes this function very interactive: you simply need to move or rotate the reference manipulator to pilot dynamic sectioning. You can also move the blue wheel button to the right or left in the Position toolbox. Position Toolbox You can also drag the green and red axes of the manipulator to move it along the selected axis. Click on the M button in the Position toolbox to set the manipulator back to the middle of the Viewing Area. Move Section along Axis Press and hold down the mouse button on the colored arcs of the manipulator to rotate the dynamic section. You can also move the colored wheel buttons to the right or left on the Rotations toolbox. In the Creation toolbox, select the relevant option Active Layer or New Layer, depending on whether you want to add the created curve to the current layer or to the first empty layer, 2. Section Curve Creation The layer that includes the section curve appears as follows in the Assembly tab: Section Curve in Layers The section is indicated with the following code: Sct 5.24 (XOY) Sct stands for Section, 5.24 is the distance to the origin and the values in brackets indicate the coordinates of the section plane. There are 2 types of rectangular/cylindrical bounding box: Orientated: the box is created in accordance with the orientation of the part. Minimum: the box is created in such a way that the required block of material is reduced to a minimum. Rectangular Bounding Box 1. Open the wxplore_exa_04.a3d file. 2. Select the Orientated or Minimum option in the Bounding Box menu. 3. Click the model or surfaces that you want to include in the bounding box and validate. Oriented Bounding Box Minimum Bounding Box In both cases, the Bounding Box Parameters dialog box is displayed: you can use it to adjust the size of the box. Press and hold down the mouse button on the double arrow of the dimension and drag it onto the required position. Extending the Bounding Box To extend the bounding box along the 3 axes, enter the additional value in the relevant fields. For example, if you want to extend the bounding box by 5 mm on the X+ axis and by 10 mm on the X- axis, enter 5 in the X+ field and press [Enter] then enter 10 in the X- field and press [Enter]. To extend the bounding box by the same value in all directions, activate the Uniform Allowance option, enter the extension value in the X+ field and press [Enter]. Viewing Collisions between the Bounding Box and the Part You can also view any collision between the part and the bounding box. This needs to be activated under the Display tab. Bounding Box: Display Tab Click on the icon and click on the part element in the Viewing Area. Note that you can change the color of the collision curve (Intersection Color). Their dimensions are displayed in the dialog box, allowing you to choose a bounding box according to its volume. 3. The new material is added in the Materials list table in the Analysis tab. To delete a material from the list, select the corresponding line and click on the - button. The modifications are color coded: the green color means that material has been removed, while the red color indicates that material has been added. In this example, we are going to use the wxplore_exa_05a.catpart and wxplore_exa_05b.catpart files. 1. Activate the Import option. 2. Open each model in the same tab. Since both models are very similar, it may be difficult to distinguish between both. In this case, click on the Assembly tab and select/unselect the model that you want to be displayed in the Viewing Area. Click on the initial model in the Part Manager. 5. Click on the modified model in the Part Manager. The Viewing Area now shows the model with new colors and the Compare Models dialog box is displayed. Model Comparison The green color indicates areas where material has been removed while the red color shows where material has been added. To determine the quantity of material to be added or removed, press and hold down the [Ctrl] key then click on the surface: the application shows you the distance between the two faces: Compared Distances You can modify the information displayed in the labels by activating the Show Dx/Dy/Dz option in the dialog box. As these are measurement labels, you can also move them in the Viewing Area. If for any reason you want to invert the initial and modified models, click on the icon Analyzing Draft Angles You can view all draft angles on your model. Surface Orientation Before analyzing draft angles, you have to make sure that the surfaces are correctly orientated by using the Solid Stitching function. 1. Open the barrel.igs file. 2. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox. The Entity Selection dialog box is displayed. 3. Select the whole model and validate. This opens the Draft Angle Visualization dialog box: Draft Angle Visualization The reference direction is indicated by a red arrow. Depending on your part, you may wish to change the draft angle values that are displayed by default when opening the dialog box. In this case, for the display to be changed dynamically, activate the Auto option or you will have to click on the Apply button to view modifications in the Viewing Area Analyzing Curvature The Curvature function displays the part with different colors according to the curvature radius of the surfaces. This will allow you to rapidly determine the required minimum cutter diameter to machine the part. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Solid Curvature. Models Menu: Curvature 3. Click on the model that you want to analyze. To define the range of radii to be displayed, enter the desired maximum and minimum values respectively in the Maximum Radius and Minimum Radius fields. You should obtain the following result: Model Thickness Analysis The application automatically estimates the minimum and maximum thickness of the model. The thin areas are displayed in red, and the thick areas in blue. The dialog box indicates the minimum, mid and maximum thicknesses. The areas where the thickness is equal (+/- the value defined in the Mid Thickness Percentage field) to the mid thickness are displayed in green. Click on various points of the model to obtain a label with the precise thickness at the clicked point. You can delete or keep the labels by clicking on the corresponding buttons in the dialog box. If you are working on an assembly part or with several models on the same session, you can click on the Select New Entity button and select another model to analyze. Deactivate the Display only Analyzed Entity option if you want all the models to be displayed in the Viewing Area. You can adjust the calculation precision by moving the Accuracy cursor in the dialog box and clicking on the Update button. Setting this cursor to High increases the calculation times. Click on the Close button to exit the function Analyzing Plane Faces During the part analysis, you can also show all surfaces that are planar, perpendicular or non planar. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Plane Faces. 82 6 - Analyzing Analysis Tools Plane Faces For higher flexibility, you can change the color codification directly by clicking on the color rectangle and selecting another color. You can position your cursor over the various types of planar faces to obtain the angle information according to a reference plane. For parallel faces, the information label below the cursor displays the distance between the reference plane and the plane formed by the selected surface. The angle information displayed below the cursor can be modified in the Angle Format section of the dialog box. You can deactivate the Dynamic Information option so that no angle information is displayed below the cursor. To change the reference plane, click on the Reference Plane button, create a new plane for the part display to be updated accordingly. Activate the Display Edges option to show the sharp edges of the part in the Viewing Area. You can save the analysis settings by clicking on the Save as Default button. Click on the Close button to exit the function Analyzing Face Area You can determine the area of selected models/faces. To illustrate this, we are going to use the wxplore_exa_04.a3d file. 1. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Face Area. 2. Select the faces/models that you want to analyze and validate. For our example, select the whole model. The following dialog box is displayed. Face Area Analysis Dialog Box The model is now displayed with 2 different colors: in white the faces whose area is higher than the Reference Area indicated in the dialog box (in mm²); in red the faces whose area is lower than the Reference Area. You can show the faces whose area is higher than the Reference Area in transparent by activating the corresponding option in the dialog box. Activating the Highlight Faces option allows you to display red arrows, which indicates the orientation of the faces, on the faces whose area is lower than the Reference Area. If these arrows are orientated towards the inside of the model, you should reorient the faces. If you are working on an assembly part or with several models under the same tab, you can click on the Select New Entities button and select another model to analyze. Deactivate the Display only Analyzed Entities option if you want all the models to be displayed in the Viewing Area Analyzing the Projected Surface of a Model This function creates an object, which corresponds to the projected surface of an element, on a plane and according to a given vector. It allows you to measure the area of the projected zone. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click in the icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Projection on a Plane. The Model Projection dialog box is displayed. Model Projection Dialog Box 3. Click on the button of the Projection Vector option. 4. Use the Vector Definition dialog box to define the projection vector. For our example, select the Y axis and validate. 5. Click on the button of the Projection Plane option. 6. This allows you to position the projection vector perpendicularly to the projection plane. 7. Click on the Apply button. The projected surface of the part along the defined vector is displayed on the defined projection plane. The volume of this projected surface is indicated in the Area field of the dialog box. Projected Surface and Area If you are working on an assembly part or with several models under the same tab, you can click on the Select New Entities button and select another model to analyze. Deactivate the Display Analyzed Entities only option if you want all the models to be displayed in the Viewing Area. 8. Click OK to validate. The projected surface is still displayed on the Viewing Area. You can keep it for measuring purposes or delete it Analyzing Solid Edges This function allows you to retrieve sharp edges and borders from a solid model in order to analyze and modify them. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Stitch the model. If you do not stitch the model, the Solid Edge Analysis function will only show free edges in green on the model. 3. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox and select Solid Edge Analysis. 4. Select the whole model. The Solid Edge Analysis dialog box is displayed and the color display of the model has changed. The borders are now displayed on the mesh model. Borders Tab Mesh Edge Analysis: Borders The Borders tab of the dialog box shows the current Number of Borders in the part with a given Border Cut Angle value. Click on the Apply button to validate. In our example, there is only 1 border. Sharp Edges Tab Click on the Sharp Edges tab. Mesh Edge Analysis: Sharp Edges This tab shows the current Number of Sharp Edges found in the part with given Cut Angle and Detection Factor values. Set the different values as required and click on the icon to obtain the new number of sharp edges and obtain a preview in the Viewing Area, or select the Auto Refresh option to display the changes dynamically. Each scene includes a fixed orientation of the part, annotations, dimensions, etc. The user can then navigate from one scene to the other and use each scene as a starting point for further analysis. Scenes are created and managed in the Scenes tab. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file. 2. Position the part as you wish, make annotations, insert dimensions, etc. 3. Click on the icon (either in the Scenes tab or in the Collaboration/Export toolbox). A scene is automatically created with this configuration of the part. 4. Click on the icon and change the default name of the scene. Blocked Orientation By default when activating a scene, the orientation is blocked. To use this orientation as a starting point and allow part movements, you must first unlock the part orientation by clicking on the icon. 5. For our example, click on the icon and change the orientation of the part. 6. Click on the icon to create a new scene. Rename the scene. 7. Objects will be added to the current scene as long as the function is active (icon appears in yellow). Making Existing Objects Available for a Scene If you want to make existing objects available for a given scene only, activate the scene first, select the object and click on the icon. The selected object is now only visible in this particular scene. Generating Documentation from the Scenes You can generate a RTF, PDF or HTML documentation file from selected scenes. 1. Select the scene(s) for which you to generate documentation in the list. Use the [Ctrl] or [Shift] key for multiselection. 2. Click on the icon. The Scene Document dialog box is displayed. 3. Click on the Export button and select the export format (RTF, PDF or HTML). For our example, select the PDF format. The Export to PDF dialog box is displayed. 4. Click OK to validate. 5. Basically, this initially consists of defining each of the parts or elements that you want to animate then defining the movements they can make (movement type, start and end position, etc.). The Collisions tab allows you to select two group of entities and detect collisions between them. The left side of the Timeline tab ( ) is where the entities to animate are added and can be grouped together. The right side of the Timeline tab ( ) allows you to add movements for the selected entities or groups of entities. Movements are added by right clicking on this side of the user interface. There are represented by colored rectangles that you can drag and drop along the Timeline to determine their start/end time, and that you can spread manually to adjust their duration. Enter the name of the movement in the corresponding field. For our example, enter Rotation in the Name field. 2. Click on the Color icon and select the color of your movement in the Timeline. 3. You can click on the Absolute button and select an axis according the origin axis system of the part, or click on the Local button and use the local axis system of the entity. 4. Click on the Absolute button. 5. Click on the 2pts button in the Vector Definition dialog box. 6. Click on the icon in the Point Definition dialog box. 7. Click on 2 holes on the side of the part (see image below) and validate. Vector Direction 8. Enter 90 in the Angle field. 9. 130 9 - Documenting Creating Animations Animating the Screws We are going to define an unscrewing movement for each of the screws. Therefore we need to define a rotational axis for each of them: 1. Right click on a screw in the list and select Compute Axis System. Compute Axis System The application automatically creates a local axis system at the center of the entity s bounding box. The Z direction is automatically aligned along the longest dimension of this bounding box. 2. Repeat this operation for the other screws. Press and hold the [Ctrl] key and select the 3 other screws. Right click on your selection, then select Compute Axis Systems. You can modify the local axis system. To do so, right click on the corresponding entity in the list and select Edit Axis System. 3. Right click on the Timeline in front of the first screw and select Add Movement. 4. Position the new movement after the Rotation movement in the Timeline. 5. Expand the new movement so that its duration is 2 seconds. New Movement 6. Double click on the new movement to edit it. In the Movement Edition dialog box, we are going to define the unscrewing movement: 1. Enter the name of the movement (Unscrewing) and change its color. 2. Enter 80 in the Length field. The Thread section allows you to select predefined threading options. 6. Click on the Category drop-down list and select ISO Coarse. Note that the Custom option allows you to define your own Thread Pitch. 7. Click on the Designation drop-down list and select the M5 type. Note that the Thread Pitch is automatically defined. 8. Simulate your movement by dragging the cursor at the bottom of the dialog box. You should obtain the following result: Unscrewing Movement Defined 9. Click OK to validate and exit the dialog box. This option allows you to make modifications on one movement and apply the same modification to the copies automatically. Note that you can also make a simple copy by selecting Paste Movement in the context menu. Paste Reference Movement You should obtain the following result: Copied Movements In our example, the upper movement is the first movement of the four similar movements, as indicated by the numbers between brackets. We need to align these movements on the Timeline so that they are performed at the same time. To do so, you can drag and drop them manually or use the context menu of the movements. 3. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key, then click on each unscrewing movement in the Timeline. 4. Double click on one movement to edit it. 2. Click on the Helicoid/Screw movement in the list of the Movement Edition dialog box. 3. Enter 100 in the Length field, then press [Enter] to validate. 4. Simulate the movement by dragging the cursor at the bottom of the dialog box. 134 9 - Documenting Creating Animations Filtering Entity Display You can click on the drop-down list at the bottom of the dialog box to select the entities to display. You can show all the entities, all the entities to which the reference movement is associated (in our case, the four screws), or show only the entities linked to the selected movement (in our case, one screw). Showing the Entities Linked to the Reference Movement 5. Click OK to validate. Now we are going to add an Opacity Change movement to hide all the screws after they have unscrewed. 1. Right click on the line in front of the Screws group and select Add Opactity Change. 2. Position the Opacity movement after the unscrewing movements on the Timeline. Adjust its duration to 1 second. 3. Double click on the new movement to edit it. The Parameter Edition dialog box is displayed. 4. In this dialog box, drag the cursor to the left so that the corresponding entities are progressively made transparent. Parameter Edition: Opacity 5. Click OK to validate. 6. Click on the icon to position the movement at the end of the animation. 2. Select the Slide in the list 3. Click on the icon. The Entity Fast Positioning dialog box is displayed, and a 3-axis manipulator is displayed at the center of the slide. 4. Drag and drop the green axis of the manipulator so that the slide comes out of the part. Moving the Slide Note that you can also use the Fast Entity Positioning dialog box and enter coordinates for translation movements and angles for rotation movements. You can also use the manipulator or the dialog box to combine a rotation with a translation. 5. Click OK to validate and exit the dialog box. We are going to use the Movement Edition dialog box to combine a translation with a rotation: 1. Add a new movement to the slide, at the end of the animation. 2. Double click on the new movement. The following dialog box is displayed: Animation Information Dialog Box This dialog box shows basic information about the animation. 2. Enter the name of the animation in the corresponding field and click OK to validate. The new name is displayed in the Active Animation drop-down list: Active Animation Drop-Down List This drop-down list allows you to select the animation to display/modify when you have defined several animations for the part. To create a new animation, proceed as follows: 1. Click on the icon. 2. Define the name of the animation. 3. Select the entities to animate and define your movements. The Animation dialog box can be manually resized for better visibility. Once you have resized the dialog box click on the icon to adjust the Timeline content to the size of the dialog box. This way, you can see all the defined movements: Timeline Adjusted to the Size of the Dialog Box You can delete one or several movements from the animation: 1. Select the movement(s) (press and hold down the [Ctrl] key for multi-selection). 2. Right click on your selection and select Delete. Click on the icon to simulate the animation in the reverse direction Detecting Collisions After creating an animation, you can make the application check for possible collisions between the different objects. It simply consists in defining two objects for collision checking: collisions are then marked in red during the simulation. 1. Click on the Collisions tab in the Animation dialog box. Animation Dialog Box: Collisions Tab For our example, we are going to detect collisions between the cover and the screws. 2. Click on the icon. The following dialog box is displayed: Collision Check Parameters Dialog Box It allows you to select the models for which the collisions have to be checked. 3. Click on the icon in the First Model Group section. 4. Select all the models that have to be included in the first group. For our example, select the cover. 5. Click on the icon in the Second Model Group section. 6. Select all the models that have to be included in the second group. For our example, select the 4 screws. 7. In the Animation dialog box, click on the icon. The following dialog box is displayed: Animation Recording Dialog Box 2. Click on the icon in the Video File Name section, and select a location on your computer. 3. Enter a name for the video file that will be created, then click on the Open button. 4. Drag the cursor at the bottom of the Animation Recording dialog box to simulate the whole animation. This will help you to define the recording zone of the animation and include all the movements. 5. Click on the button of the Recording Zone option and draw a rectangular selection to define the section of the Viewing Area to you want to record. 6. In the Mode section, select the type of animation that you want to record. For our example, activate the Bidirectional option. 7. Click on the Record button. You should see the animation simulation while the application is recording it. 8. In the Video Compression dialog box, select a compressor in the corresponding drop-down list, then click OK to validate. For our example, keep the default compressor. Video Compressor Dialog Box 9. 143 10 - Sharing Exporting a Model 10 - Sharing Exporting a Model Once you have imported a model, you can export it in other formats directly from the application especially in the IGES generic format. This function is very useful when dealing with native interface files since you can avoid using expensive, compatible solutions. 1. Import the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. Export Menu 3. Select the export format, e.g. IGES. 4. Select the objects to be included in the target file. Here, you can select the whole model. 5. Validate. 6. Browse the storage location and attach a name to the file. 7. Click on the Save button Exporting a Model with the Client Viewer If you want to share a model with someone and make sure that there will not be any compatibility problems, you can create an EXE file that can be read by anyone. This EXE file includes a light version of the application with basic display, measuring and analysis functions. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file for which you have created an animation. 2. Click on the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. 3. Select the objects that you want to export in the viewer and confirm your selection. For our example, select the whole model. 4. In the Mini Viewer Generation dialog box, define the directory to save your file, give it a name and click on the Save button. The Client Viewer Export dialog box is displayed. You can also use the Export File field to select the storage location of the file that will be created and give it a name. 6. If you want the file to be automatically compressed in a ZIP file, activate the Compress option. For our example, do not activate this option. You can use the Password button to protect the EXE file with a password. 7. Click on the Default Render Mode drop-down list and select the default display mode for the part in the exported file. 8. In the Animations section, select the animation that you want to export by checking the corresponding box. In our example, we only have one animation. They will only need to launch this file to view the model and attached data in the Client Viewer. Client Viewer To play the animation, proceed as follows: 1. Click on the Animation icon at the top of the user interface. The Animation toolbar is displayed at the bottom of the user interface. 2. Click on the icon to simulate the animation. Simulating the Animation The Models section on the left side of the Client Viewer contains the assembly tree structure of the part. You can make measures on the model: 1. Click on the Measures icon at the top of the Client Viewer and select the type of measure to be made. 2. Make the corresponding measurement on the model.
