5 1 - Introduction Training Guide Objectives 1 - Introduction Training Guide Objectives This manual presents the basic key concepts concerning WorkXplore features. The main goal of this manual is to provide users with the tools (knowledge and ideas) that may be applied to specific problems that they may encounter when analyzing CAD parts. To complete this information, you may turn to the online help available in the application itself. At the end of this training guide, you should be able to: Import and open any CAD part using native interfaces, Display the CAD model in an optimum way, Take all possible measurements, Annotate the CAD model, Create basic entities, Perform more advanced analysis, Create scenes and play animations, Share information with coworkers. This manual has several files which show how to use different functions. 6 1 - Introduction WorkXplore Environment Graphic User Interface - Main Areas 1 Ribbon. It contains toolboxes with the common functions that you may have to perform in a chronological order. Some of them can also be found in the Creation, Edition and Display tabs. 2 Part Manager with vertical tabs. You can use it to browse your computer to open/import your CAD part, manage components in the case of an assembly, create scenes and manage layers. 3 HUD (Heads Up Display). It contains basic display function: zoom, predefined views in the X, Y and Z axis, views, etc. 4 System Help: when activating a new function, this small frame shows explanations on how to use it. 7 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files The application reads standard and native 2D/3D CAD files originating from most of the CAD applications. Refer to the Online Help for the list of available formats. After importing your CAD file, you can analyze it and save it in the application format (A3D extension) and share it with others Importing one or more CAD Files Once you have launched the application, you can start by importing a CAD model in a native format. This is done using the Explorer tab in the Part Manager. This tab is displayed when opening the application and shows the file browser and all files to be found in each directory. File Browser 1. In the upper part of the Explorer tab, click on the directory where the part is stored on your disk. For our example, select the Training directory. The middle part of the Explorer tab shows the list of the files that are contained in this directory. 8 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files 2. For training, select an IGS file (e.g. wxplore_exa_01.igs). 3. Drag & drop it onto the Viewing Area. You can also double click on the file in the Part Manager. Since the file you want to import is an IGS file, the Import 3D dialog box is displayed, allowing you to define the triangulation tolerance for the import as well as the type of entities you want to import: Import 3D 4. Once you have defined import options, click on the Import button for the CAD model to be displayed in the Viewing Area. Imported CAD File The model is imported with the filters and layers defined in the initial CAD program. You can now view the CAD model under different orientations, make measurements, analyze it, etc. Importing Several Models in the Same Viewing Area You can also import several models into the same Viewing Area, e.g. to build different prototypes, assemblies. 9 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing one or more CAD Files Filtering Files The Explorer tab contains a drop-down list that allows you to filter the CAD files to be imported according to their types. Filtering CAD Files in the Explorer Tab 1. After opening the first model, activate the Import option. 2. Double click on each additional file(s) that you want to import. Import When the Import option is deactivated, press and hold down the [Alt] key then drag and drop a new model to import it into the same Viewing Area. Import Option The Import option allows you to build complete assemblies. Direct Opening If you do not want to review the import options when opening a native file, activate the Automatic option. Importing Several Models in Separate Viewing Areas The application allows you to open various models in separate Viewing Areas in different tabs so that you can work on several files at the same time, compare models, etc. 1. Once your first model is imported (e.g. wxplore_exa_01.igs), deactivate the Import option. 2. Double click on another file in the Explorer tab. For our example, select the wxplore_exa_02.a3d file. Deactivate the Import option. 2. Open a Windows explorer. 3. Browse the Training directory of the application. 4. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key. 5. Click on the wxplore_exa_03.a3d file. 6. Click on the wxplore_exa_04.a3d file. 7. Drag and drop your selection from the Windows explorer into the Viewing Area. The 2 files are now imported in the same tab. Files Imported into the Same Viewing Area Drag & Drop WorkNC Workzones You can also use the drag & drop method to import WorkNC workzones into the application. It will automatically looks for the geometry files. Importing Compressed Files You can also drag & drop compressed files onto the Viewing Area. The application can read the following formats: ZIP, 7Z, RAR, BCZ (Siemens PLM ZIP). Drag & drop the training.zip file onto the Viewing Area. 12 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Saving a CAD Model You can choose the files to be imported from the compressed file by checking the boxes in front of their names. If you check the box of the parent folder, all the files will be imported. Click OK to validate. Depending on whether the Import option is activated or not, all the selected files are imported into a single Viewing Area or separate Viewing Areas Saving a CAD Model After importing a CAD model, you are free to save it in the application format with an.a3d extension. This will allow you to retrieve the file for further modifications and share it with coworkers who also use the application. Click on File > Save / Save as in the text menu bar. Save in the A3D format Opening a WorkXplore File A WorkXplore file with an A3D extension can be opened in different manners. Click on the icon and browse your file Click on File > Open in the text menu bar, or select your file in the list of recent files. As for importing, you can also use the Explorer tab in the Part Manager or the Windows Explorer and drag and drop the file onto the Viewing Area. Each time you open a WorkXplore file, it is added to the Recent Files list Importing Invisible Entities When importing files with hidden entities, you have the possibility to select whether you want to import them as invisible entities, as shown entities or not to import them (default parameter). 13 2 - Importing and Opening CAD Files Importing Invisible Entities 1. Open the wxplore_exa_07.catpart file. 2. In the Import 3D dialog box, activate the Import Invisible Entities option. 3. Activate the Show option. Import Invisible Entities: Show Option 4. Click on the Import button. 5. Make sure that the Import option is deactivated and open the same file again. 6. This time, leave the Import Invisible Entities option deactivated in the Import 3D dialog box. 7. Click on the Import button. You should obtain two tabs with a different part display: Invisible Entities Imported and Visible Invisible Entities Not Imported You can also import the invisible entities and keep their invisible status: 1. Open the same file again. 2. In the Import 3D dialog box, activate the Import Invisible Entities option. 3. Make sure that the Leave Invisible option is activated. 4. Click on the Import button. This allows you to switch the display between shown and hidden entities. You should now only see the hidden entities: Showing Hidden Entities 6. Click on the icon again to restore the part display Exercise: File Import Objectives Import files in the same tab and save the resulting assembly under the A3D format. 15 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Entity Selection and Selection Filters 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Selecting entities or faces is required by a wide range of functions in the application. Selection filters will help you to select the appropriate entities. These selections often imply that you define auxiliary entities such as points, vectors and planes Entity Selection and Selection Filters A wide range of functions requires the selection of one or several entities and, in certain cases, face selection. Pre-Selection Functions which require a selection operation have a pre-selection indication showing the concerned elements. Pre-selection depends on the type of point to be selected, as defined in the Point Definition dialog box. Standard Mouse Click Selection If a selection is required, the mouse cursor in the Viewing Area takes the shape of a small hand Selection dialog box is displayed. and the Entity Click on the entity or the required face to select it. Selected entities or faces change their color according to the selection color defined in the Application Parameters. To cancel the selection of an entity or face, click on it again. The entity or face display switches back to the original color. Entity Selection Dialog Box The number in the title bar of the dialog box dynamically indicates the number of selected entities. 16 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating All None Invert Names Entity Selection and Selection Filters The first function icon line in this toolbox defines what is selected. This function allows you to select all visible entities. This function allows you to deselect all visible entities. This function allows you to invert the selection: selected entities are deselected and not selected entities are selected. This function allows you to select entities by their names. When you activate this function, a dialog box is displayed which allows you to enter the character string you are looking for. It is possible to use the wildcards [*] and [?] where [*] replaces any character string and [?] a single character. The second function icon line defines how the selection is made. This function allows you to select entities by a user-defined rectangular selection window. X X X X Window 1. Click on the first point of the selection window. 2. Drag the mouse diagonally and click on the second point of the selection window. This function allows you to select entities by a user-defined polygon. Polygon 1. Click on the first point of the polygon. 2. Click successively on other points to form the polygon. 3. Validate the polygon. or Inside This switch button allows you to define whether the entities are selected inside or outside the selection window or polygon. X Outside inside Strictly This switch button allows you to define whether the entities to be selected must strictly be inside the selection window or polygon. If Crossing is active, all the entities which are partially included are selected. X or Crossing Any of the selection methods described above selects all unselected entities, cancels the selection of all previously selected entities. 17 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Filter Entity Selection and Selection Filters Selecting this option displays the Filter by dialog box, which allows you to define which entities are taken into account for selection. X By default, all entities are selected. Clicking on the All button selects all the entities. Clicking on the None button unselects all the entities. Clicking on the Invert button swaps selected and unselected entities. To select specific entities, proceed as follows: 1. Click on the None button. 2. Check the boxes, which correspond to the entities to be selected. 3. Click OK to validate. 4. Click on the All icon to select all the entities of the same type. Layer The settings apply only to the current selection and are reset at each new selection. X This function allows you to select the layers that are taken into account during selection. By default, all the layers are included. The following dialog box is displayed when you select the function. 1. Check the layer boxes for which you want to select entities. 2. 18 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Point Definition or N Color This function allows you to choose a reference color for selection. This color is then displayed in the color case next to the function icon. By default, no color is active, which is represented by an N in the color case. 1. Activate the function by clicking on the color icon. 2. Select an entity whose color you want to define as reference color. Only the entities with this specific color will be selected. To cancel this color filter, double click on the color case. If you click on the down arrow next to the color icon, the following drop-down menu is displayed. The following options are available: By Selection: This option works as described above. Click on an entity to define a reference color. Color Selection: This option displays the extended color selection dialog box which allows you to select one of the available standard and user-defined colors. Cancel Filter by Color: Just like a double click on the color case, selecting this option cancels the reference color selection. Validating/Cancelling a Function on page Point Definition A point is the most simple and most important entity in the application. It is the basis for any construction or measurement. Consequently, its definition must be quick and easy. By default, if point selection is required, a mouse click makes the application search for characteristic points. These points are the vertexes on models or the extremities or middle points for complementary entities. As these points are not sufficient, the following dialog box, offering advanced point selection functions, is systematically displayed as soon as point selection is required. 19 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Point Definition Available Options On Screen Selection This point is a projection on the screen plane passing through the origin of the mouse cursor when you select a point. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [E] key. Absolute Coordinates Defines a point by entering its coordinates with respect to the origin of the current axis system. When you select this function, the following dialog box is displayed: 1. Enter the X, Y and Z coordinates of the point to be defined. 2. Click on OK to validate. Relative Coordinates Defines a point by entering an offset value with respect to the coordinate values of the most recently defined point. When you select this function, the following dialog box is displayed: 1. Enter the offset value for the X, Y and Z coordinates with respect to the most recently defined point. 2. Click on OK to validate. Circle Center Defines a point in the center of a selected circle or circular surface boundary of the model. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [C] key. Intersection Defines a point at the intersection of two selected straight segments. Between two Points with Distance Ratio Defines a point between two points and by defining a ratio for the distance between these points. For example, if you want to define a midpoint: 1. 20 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Plane Definition Point on Mesh Vertex Defines a point at a selected vertex of a mesh model. Point on a Face Defines a point, which is the perpendicular projection of the mouse cursor position on the screen onto a face of the model. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [F] key. Point at Same X Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same Y and Z coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected X coordinate. Point at Same Y Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same X and Z coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected Y coordinate. Point at Same Z Coordinate The point defined with this function has the same X and Y coordinates as the most recently created point and the selected Z coordinate. Virtual Point Sometimes, point definition needs an intermediary step. If this button is highlighted, the selected point is temporary and its coordinates are saved. Keyboard shortcut: Press the [I] key Plane Definition Planes play a significant role among the application entities. Plane definition or selection is necessary in a large number of functions. That is why the advanced plane definition functions have been grouped in the following dialog box which is displayed each time a plane entity is required. Plane Definition Dialog Box Define Plane Position The two icons on the left have a particular function. They allow you to define the position of a plane with respect to a reference plane. Positions a parallel plane at a selected point with respect to the previously selected or created reference plane. Positions a plane at an offset distance with respect to the previously selected or created reference plane. Proceed as follows: 1. Select the required option. 2. Define the reference plane. 3. According to the selected function, either select a passing point or enter an offset value in the dialog box which is displayed. The plane is created automatically. Defines the XY plane of the origin axis system. Defines the XZ plane of the origin axis system. Defines the YZ plane of the origin axis system. Defines a plane by selecting two line type entities. Defines a plane by selecting three points. Defines the XY plane of the local axis system, if any. Defines the XZ plane of the local axis system, if any. Defines the YZ plane of the local axis system, if any. Defines a perpendicular plane tangent to a selected point on a straight segment or polyline. Defines a plane by selecting an existing plane. Plane Preview If the plane is correctly defined, it is represented as a transparent square in selection color. Plane Preview Vector Definition Some functions need the definition or selection of a vector. Each time a vector is required, the following dialog box is displayed. Vector Definition Dialog Box This dialog box contains a number of buttons, which allow you to define the vector and its direction. Available Options Inv X This button allows you to invert the vector direction. Defines a vector in the X axis of the local axis system, if any. Defines a vector in the Z axis of the local axis system, if any. Selecting this option allows you to define the XYZ coordinate values of the vector. When you select this option, the following dialog box is displayed. 1. Enter the desired coordinate values. 2. Click OK to validate. 2Pts Defines a vector by selecting two points. When you select this option, the Point Definition dialog box is displayed. ox oy oz Cyl PPln Defines a vector in the X axis of the origin axis system. Defines a vector in the Y axis of the origin axis system. Defines a vector in the Z axis of the origin axis system. Defines a vector by selecting the axis of a cylindrical face. Defines a vector, which is perpendicular to a plane. When you select this option, the Plane Definition dialog box is displayed. Procedure Proceed as follows: 1. Select the required option. 2. Define the vector. 3. If required, invert the direction by selecting the Inv button. 4. Validate Copying and Pasting Entities You can copy entities in the current file or in a different file. 23 3 - Selecting Entities, Defining Auxiliary Entities and Validating Validating/Cancelling a Function 1. Activate the tab containing the Screw_chc.igs file. 2. Click on the Edition tab. 3. Click on the icon in the Copy/Paste toolbox. You can also press the [Ctrl] + [C] keys. 4. Select all the entities in the Viewing Area. 5. Activate the tab containing the Switch.igs file. 6. Click on the icon in the Copy/Paste toolbox. You can also press the [Ctrl] + [V] keys. You should obtain the following result: Copied Entities Validating/Cancelling a Function Numerous functions prompt the user to validate his actions or to cancel them if the desired result is not attained. If a function needs to be validated, 2 icons are available in the upper right corner of the Viewing Area. Validate and Cancel Icons Validating Clicking on the icon. Use the mouse button defined in the Application Parameters, if any. Press the [Enter] key of your keyboard. Canceling Click on the icon. Press the [Esc] key of your keyboard. 25 4 - Viewing Display Modes 4 - Viewing Display Modes Display modes are available in the Visualization toolbox. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_05a.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Visualization toolbox. 3. Try the different display modes by clicking each of the available icons: Display Menu Wireframe Shading Shading + Wireframe Hidden Faces Selecting this option switches the display into wireframe mode. Selecting this option switches the display into shaded mode without surface boundaries display. Selecting this option switches the display into shaded mode with display of the surface boundaries. Selecting this option switches the display into a kind of wireframe mode. Whether hidden surface edges are displayed and how depends on the option selected in the Hidden Edges sub-menu. If hidden edges are not displayed, this option may be useful to make a screenshot of the part. Hidden Edges Selecting this option displays a sub-menu containing the following entries: Hidden, Dotted and Low Intensity. The selected option acts on the display of the surface boundaries if Shading + Wireframe or Hidden Faces has been selected as main display mode. Hidden: hides all the surface boundaries which are not visible. Dotted: all invisible surface boundaries are displayed as dotted lines. Low Intensity: all invisible surface boundaries are displayed as light colored lines. Smooth Edges Selecting this option allows you to show or hide the smooth edges of the model. 26 4 - Viewing Display Modes Texture Define Textures Shading Quality Selecting this option allows you apply the texture which has been previously defined in the Select a Texture dialog box to the part or model. Selecting this option allows to select the entities or models to which you want to apply a texture. The Select a Texture dialog box is then displayed in which you can select from a large number of textures. This option also allows you to define the default texture to be applied when you select the Texture option. Selecting this option displays a sub-menu containing the following entries : Ultra Fine, Fine, Normal, Rough, Very Rough. These options allows you to change the triangulation tolerance of the part display either for selected faces or models. In the following example the tolerance value is set to Fine on the left (yellow) faces and to Very Rough on the right (gray) faces. Applying a Display Mode to a Given Object You can select a different display mode for each surface of your model, but only if the model is exploded. You can also select a different display mode for each model in an assembly. 1. Right click on the surface/model. 2. Go to the Display menu. 3. Go to the Rendering menu. 4. 27 4 - Viewing Display Modes 1. Click on the Display icon in the Visualization toolbox. 2. Press and hold down the [Shift] key. 3. Click on the display mode that you want to apply. The Entity Selection dialog box is displayed. 4. Click on the surface(s) or model(s) to which you want to apply the display mode. Applying Different Textures to Various Models and/or Surfaces 1. You can lock the rotation functions for the Z+, Z-, X+, X-, Y+ or Y- orientations: 1. Select the orientation view. 2. Click on the view icon in the HUD display zone. 3. Click on the icon. In the opposite example, we have defined a Z+ orientation, then we have locked the rotation functions. Zoom Functions 1. Click on the icon. 2. Select one of the following zoom functions. Select Empty the Recycle Bin definitely Stitching Models Model stitching allows connexity initialization between faces and determines faces representing exact shapes (cylinders, planes ) It also allows you to obtain consistent face orientation in order to obtain reliable results for volume calculation, draft angle and undercut analysis, etc. When you retrieve a model in the application, the faces are not necessarily orientated in the right direction. It is however essential to have consistent face orientation in order to obtain reliable results for the following functions: calculating the volume of a model, checking the model with respect to a point cluster, analyzing draft angle and undercut areas, analyzing the model thickness, etc. You can stitch a whole model automatically or stitch faces of a model manually. Manual stitching is mostly used to repair models. Open the CatiaV5-sample2.CATPart file. There are 3 ways of accessing the function: 1. In the Home tab, in the Edition toolbox, click on the icon and select Solid Stitching. Solid Stitching in the Edition Toolbox 2. In the Edition tab, click on the icon in the Transformations toolbox. In the 3 cases, the Solid Stitch dialog box is displayed and the model appears with different colors: Stitch Solid Dialog Box and Orientation Colors The gray color indicates the outside of the model. The orange color indicates the inside of the model, which means that the corresponding surfaces are not correctly orientated. The free edges are displayed in green on the model. As the model is not stitched, you can see in the dialog box that there are 856 free edges. You can hide them by deactivating the Show Free Edges option. You can also change their color by clicking on the green rectangle and selecting a new color. You can show dots on the free edges by activating the Display Dots on Free Edges option. You can also change their color by clicking on the blue rectangle and selecting a new color. You can adjust their size in the Dot Size field. For our example, keep the default value. This option allows concatenating the faces when stitching. For our example, activate this option. This option is activated by default. It allows surfaces that form cylinders and planar surfaces to be easily recognized and grouped together. For our example, keep this option activated. Automatic Stitching Click on the icon. Stitched Model and Orientated Surfaces The surfaces are now displayed in gray, which means that they are correctly orientated. There are no more free edges. You can click on the icon to invert the orientation of the surfaces. Click on the icon in the dialog box. The following dialog box is displayed: Rotation Dialog Box By default, the Z axis of the origin axis system is activated. We are going to use the X axis of the origin axis system as rotation axis. 2. Click on the icon. 3. Click on the ox button in the Vector Definition dialog box. 4. Validate. A visual aid is displayed next to the cursor to indicate the type of entity that is currently located underneath the cursor. Click on various entities of the part to obtain measures like the following examples: Examples of Measurements Measurement information is automatically displayed in a label which point to the clicked element. Drag and drop the label onto the required position. The information of the measurement label is also displayed in the Dimension Text field in the dialog box. Check or uncheck the boxes in the dialog box to modify the information displayed in the label. Note that you can create a diameter measurement instead of a radius measurement: Activate the corresponding option in the dialog box before clicking on radii of the part. Note also that you can add a header and a footer to the current measurement label: Enter the header/footer information in the Header Text and Footer Text fields in the dialog box. Click on the All icon in the Entity Selection dialog box to select all the control points. 4. Validate Annotations Making annotations allows you to share information with partners. You can use it to attach a text legend to any part entity. Note that several predefined annotations are available: you can quickly show the description of the entity you click, the Z level of a plane surface, the coordinates of a point, a radius, etc. Open the wxplore_exa_01.igs file. Entering a Free Text Consider that you want to share remarks about this entity with partners. For example, you want to know whether the opposite sides of the part must be symmetrical or not. 1. To use this function, you must first define the cutting plane that you want to use. The three-axis manipulator makes this function very interactive: you simply need to move or rotate the reference manipulator to pilot dynamic sectioning. Drag the body of the blue axis of the manipulator to move the section up or down. You can also move the blue wheel button to the right or left in the Position toolbox. Since both models are very similar, it may be difficult to distinguish between both. As these are measurement labels, you can also move them in the Viewing Area. In the Compare Models dialog box, click on the Keep Indicators button to keep the radius displayed after ending the function. Click on the Delete Indicators button to remove the corresponding indicators. In this case, for the display to be changed dynamically, activate the Auto option or you will have to click on the Apply button to view modifications in the Viewing Area Bounding Box The bounding box function allows you to determine the size of the material block required to produce your part and thus to estimate the cost of raw materials. Click on the icon in the Analysis toolbox. Bounding Box Menu You can create a rectangular (1) or a cylindrical (2) bounding box. There are 2 types of rectangular/cylindrical bounding box: Orientated: the box is created in accordance with the orientation of the part. Click on various points of the model to obtain a label with the precise thickness at the clicked point. You can delete or keep the labels by clicking on the corresponding buttons in the dialog box. If you are working on an assembly part or with several models on the same session, you can click on the Select New Entity button and select another model to analyze. Deactivate the Display only Analyzed Entity option if you want all the models to be displayed in the Viewing Area. You can adjust the calculation precision by moving the Accuracy cursor in the dialog box and clicking on the Update button. Setting this cursor to High increases the calculation times. You can position your cursor over the various types of planar faces to obtain the angle information according to a reference plane. For parallel faces, the information label below the cursor displays the distance between the reference plane and the plane formed by the selected surface. The angle information displayed below the cursor can be modified in the Angle Format section of the dialog box. You can deactivate the Dynamic Information option so that no angle information is displayed below the cursor. To change the reference plane: 1. Click on the Reference Plane button. 2. 123 9 - Documenting Creating Scenes Creating Scenes Scenes are a succession of part configurations created to point out specific issues to other users. Each scene includes a fixed orientation of the part, annotations, dimensions, etc. The user can then navigate from one scene to the other and use each scene as a starting point for further analysis. Scenes are created and managed in the Scenes tab. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file. 2. Position the part as you wish, make annotations, insert dimensions, etc. 3. Click on the icon (either in the Scenes tab or in the Collaboration/Export toolbox). A scene is automatically created with this configuration of the part. 4. Click on the icon and change the default name of the scene. Blocked Orientation By default when activating a scene, the orientation is blocked. To use this orientation as a starting point and allow part movements, you must first unlock the part orientation by clicking on the icon. 5. For our example, click on the icon. 6. Change the orientation of the part. 7. Click on the icon to create a new scene. 8. Rename the scene. 9. Repeat this procedure to obtain the following list of scenes. You can also click on the scene and click on the icon. Creating and adding Entities to the Current Scene Once you have activated a scene, you can create entities that will be visible in the active scene only. 1. Make sure that the right scene is activated. 2. Click on the icon. 3. Create the corresponding entities. Entities will be added to the current scene as long as the function is active (icon appears in yellow). Making Existing Objects Available for a Scene To make existing objects available for a given scene only: 1. Activate the scene. 2. Select the corresponding entity. 3. Click on the icon. The selected object is now only visible in this particular scene. Generating Documentation from the Scenes You can generate a RTF, PDF or HTML documentation file from selected scenes. 1. Select the scene(s) for which you to generate documentation in the list. Use the [Ctrl] or [Shift] key for multiselection. 2. Click on the icon. The Scene Document dialog box is displayed. 3. Click on the Export button. 4. Select the export format (RTF, PDF or HTML). For our example, select the PDF format. The Export to PDF dialog box is displayed. 5. Click OK to validate. 6. Save your document Creating Animations You can animate all parts of your assemblies and create a video file. Basically, this initially consists of defining each of the parts or elements that you want to animate then defining the movements they can make (movement type, start and end position, etc.). To illustrate this, we are going to animate the various elements of the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file. We are going to animate the cover, the slide and the screws of this part. The following dialog box is displayed: Animation Dialog Box The Timeline tab allows you to select the entities to animate and create animation movements. The Collisions tab allows you to select two group of entities and detect collisions between them. The left side of the Timeline tab (1) is where the entities to animate are added and can be grouped together. The right side of the Timeline tab (2) allows you to add movements for the selected entities or groups of entities. Movements are added by right clicking on this side of the user interface. There are represented by colored rectangles that you can drag and drop along the Timeline to determine their start/end time, and that you can spread manually to adjust their duration. 126 9 - Documenting Creating Animations You can resize the Animation dialog box manually for better visibility, or click on the version of the dialog box: icon to obtain a minimized Minimized Animation Dialog Box Note that you can use this minimized version to simulate the different movements, once your animation sequence is finished. There are five types of movements: Translation: according to a defined vector. Rotation: according to a defined vector which is used as the rotational axis. Guide Curve: the movement follows a previously defined curve. Interpolation: the movement is defined by moving and/or rotating a 3-axis manipulator, which is positioned at the center of the corresponding entity. Helicoid/Screw: the movement combines a translation with a rotation, which allows you to simulate screwing/unscrewing movements. Let s suppose that you want to create the following sequence: 1. The cover opens. 2. The four screws unscrew and become transparent. 3. The slide opens. 4. The slide moves away from the part and rotates over itself by Defining the Entities to animate There are two possibilities to select the entities to animate: from the Animation dialog box or from the Assembly tab. From the Animation Dialog Box 1. Click on the icon. 2. Select the entities to animate. For our example, select all the entities and validate. In our example, we are going to group the 4 screws together: 1. Click on the icon. 2. Enter the name of the group in the New Group dialog box. 3. Click OK to validate. The new group is displayed on the left side of the dialog box, above the list of entities. 3. Select all the screws in the list (using the [Shift] or [Ctrl] key). 4. Drag and drop the selection onto the new group. If you want to apply movements to the group only, and do not want to manage each child entity, you can consolidate the group: 1. Right click on the group and select Consolidate Group. Consolidating the Group 2. Answer Yes to the Confirmation message. The child entities are removed from the list. The consolidated group is now marked with a padlock symbol: Consolidated Group Consolidating Groups If you consolidate a group, the movements defined for its child entities are deleted. You can remove selected entities from the list of entities to animate: 3. For our example, select all the entities in the list. 4. Click on the icon. Enter the name of the movement in the corresponding field. For our example, enter Rotation in the Name field. 2. Click on the Color icon and select the color of your movement in the Timeline. 3. Click on the icon at the bottom of the dialog box. 4. Select the type of movement to add, here a rotation. Defining a Rotation Movement Now you have to define the rotation axis (vector) and the rotation angle. You can click on the Absolute button and select an axis according the origin axis system of the part, or click on the Local button and use the local axis system of the entity. 5. The Z direction is automatically aligned along the longest dimension of this bounding box. 3. Repeat this operation for the other screws. Press and hold the [Ctrl] key. Select the 3 other screws. Right click on your selection. Select Compute Axis Systems. You can modify the local axis system. To do so, right click on the corresponding entity in the list and select Edit Axis System. 4. Right click on the Timeline in front of the first screw. 5. Select Add Movement. 6. Position the new movement after the Rotation movement in the Timeline. 7. Expand the new movement so that its duration is 2 seconds. New Movement 8. Double click on the new movement to edit it. In the Movement Edition dialog box, we are going to define the unscrewing movement: 1. Enter the name of the movement (Unscrewing) and change its color. 2. This option allows you to make modifications on one movement and apply the same modification to the copies automatically. Note that you can also make a simple copy by selecting Paste Movement in the context menu. Paste Reference Movement You should obtain the following result: Copied Movements In our example, the upper movement is the first movement of the four similar movements, as indicated by the numbers between brackets. We need to align these movements on the Timeline so that they are performed at the same time. To do so, you can drag and drop them manually or use the context menu of the movements. 5. Press and hold down the [Ctrl] key. 6. Click on each unscrewing movement in the Timeline. 7. Right click on the first movement (whose position is correct) of the selection. 8. Drag the cursor at the bottom of the dialog box to simulate the movement. You can show all the entities, all the entities to which the reference movement is associated (in our case, the four screws), or show only the entities linked to the selected movement (in our case, one screw). Showing the Entities Linked to the Reference Movement 6. Click OK to validate. Now we are going to add an Opacity Change movement to hide all the screws after they have unscrewed. 1. Right click on the line in front of the Screws group. 2. Select Add Opactity Change. 3. Position the Opacity movement after the unscrewing movements on the Timeline. Adjust its duration to 1 second. 4. Double click on the new movement to edit it. The Parameter Edition dialog box is displayed. 5. In this dialog box, drag the cursor to the left so that the corresponding entities are progressively made transparent. Parameter Edition: Opacity 6. Click OK to validate. 7. Click on the time bar, above the Opacity movement to check the result in the Viewing Area. The Entity Fast Positioning dialog box is displayed, and a 3 axis manipulator is displayed at the center of the slide. 4. Drag and drop the green axis of the manipulator so that the slide comes out of the part. Moving the Slide Note that you can also use the Fast Entity Positioning dialog box and enter coordinates for translation movements and angles for rotation movements. You can also use the manipulator or the dialog box to combine a rotation with a translation. 5. Click OK to validate and exit the dialog box. We are going to use the Movement Edition dialog box to combine a translation with a rotation: 1. Add a new movement to the slide, at the end of the animation. 2. Double click on the new movement. 3. In the Movement Edition dialog box, add the following translation movement along the Z axis of the local axis system. Translation 4. The new name is displayed in the Active Animation drop-down list: Active Animation Drop-Down List This drop-down list allows you to select the animation to display/modify when you have defined several animations for the part. To create a new animation, proceed as follows: 1. Click on the icon. 2. Define the name of the animation. 3. Select the entities to animate and define your movements. To delete one of the created animations: 1. Click on the Active Animation drop-down list. 2. Select the animation to delete. 3. Click on the icon. In the Animation dialog box, click on the icon. The following dialog box is displayed: Animation Recording Dialog Box 2. Click on the icon in the Video File Name section. 3. Select a location on your computer. 4. Enter a name for the video file that will be created. 5. Click on the Open button. 6. Drag the cursor at the bottom of the Animation Recording dialog box to simulate the whole animation. This will help you to define the recording zone of the animation and include all the movements. 7. Click on the button of the Recording Zone option. 8. Draw a rectangular selection to define the section of the Viewing Area to you want to record. 9. In the Mode section, select the type of animation that you want to record. For our example, activate the Bidirectional option. 10. Click on the Record button. This function is very useful when dealing with native interface files since you can avoid using expensive, compatible solutions. 1. Import the wxplore_exa_05.a3d file. 2. Click on the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. Export Menu 3. Select the export format, e.g. IGES. 4. Select the objects to be included in the target file. Here, you can select the whole model. 5. Validate. 6. Browse the storage location and attach a name to the file. 7. Click on the Save button Exporting a Model with the Client Viewer If you want to share a model with someone and make sure that there will not be any compatibility problems, you can create an EXE file that can be read by anyone. This EXE file includes a light version of the application with basic display, measuring and analysis functions. 1. Open the wxplore_exa_06.a3d file for which you have created an animation. 2. Click on the icon in the Collaboration/Export toolbox. 3. Select the objects that you want to export in the viewer and confirm your selection. For our example, select the whole model. 4. In the Animations section, select the animation that you want to export by checking the corresponding box. In our example, we only have one animation.
