1 Inventor 11 TUTORIAL 6 Complex Surface Modeling Learning Objectives After completing this tutorial, you will be able to: Construct and use surface features in solid modeling Incorporate surface features in part design when appropriate Construct Swept and Lofted surfaces Derive sketches Required Competencies Before starting this tutorial, you should have been able to: Construct, constraint and dimension sketches Project geometry on sketch planes Extrude sketched profiles Revolve sketched profiles Loft sketched profiles Understand the concepts of work and placed features Understand how to manipulate the history tree in the browser Figure 1: Toy Car Body Tutorial 6 Surface Modeling 1

2 1. Open the file Car Body.ipt. Pull down the EOP marker to reveal the sketches for this tutorial. Looks quite complex, but when we analyze the sketches one by one it is a much simpler problem. Figure 2 2. Pull the EOP marker up leaving only the Front and Front_sweep Path Sketches visible. Sweep the Front sketch along the Path sketch. Figure 3 2 Surface Modeling

3 3. Pull the EOP marker down revealing the Back and Back_sweep Path Sketches. Sweep the Back sketch along the Path sketch. Figure 4 4. 5 7. Make the xy plane visible. Figure 8 8. Start the Sculpt command and select the xy plane and all of the surfaces. Figure 9 Tutorial 6 Surface Modeling 5

6 9. Start the Fillet command and select Face Fillet. Select the front edges and set the fillet to Smooth(G2).. Figure Fillet the top and back edges with tangent fillets. (I would like to use G2 continuity but it gives an error in this case.) Figure 11 6 Surface Modeling

7 11. Pull the EOP marker down revealing the Canopy and Canopy_sweep Sketches. Sweep the Canopy and change the color property. Figure Add a 6mm tangent fillet to the intersecting loop between the body and the canopy. Figure 13 Tutorial 6 Surface Modeling 7

8 13. Start a new sketch on the xy plane and sketch the rectangle shown. Figure Make the Wheel Wells Sketch visible and Extrude cut mid plane through all. Figure 15 8 Surface Modeling

10 17. Make the Wheel Wells sketch visible again and set the sketch to Shared. Save the file. Figure Start a new Standard(mm).ipt file and Derive the Car Body as Solid Body and the Wheel Wells sketch. Figure Surface Modeling

12 21. Create a rectangle and add co linear constraints and two dimensions as shown. Figure Extrude the rectangle a distance of 100mm. Figure Surface Modeling

14 25. Start a new sketch on the xy plane and Project Geometry two diagonal corners. Figure Create a rectangle constrained to the two diagonal points and Extrude the rectangle a distance of 150mm. Figure Surface Modeling
