1 Secondary Tertiary Pathways If you re enrolled at Secondary School then CPIT s Secondary Tertiary Pathways courses are designed to help you move smoothly from school into tertiary study or work. Secondary Tertiary Pathways courses can be a good option if you re thinking of leaving school early, or you want to check out study options you don t know a lot about. The courses are designed to complement the programmes offered by schools. You ll get specialised tuition and access to facilities that schools aren t able to provide. Through Secondary Tertiary Pathways you ll develop skills that will help you into a job or further study later on. CPIT can also develop custom-built courses for individual schools or clusters of schools.
2 Barista Learn how to make the perfect cup of coffee and gain the skills you need to launch a career in the exciting world of hospitality. Service Industries 1 Nil As requested 4 hours $120 per student Under expert guidance, you ll become confident in the art of making beverages including pressed, filtered and espresso coffees using commercial espresso machines. After completing this qualification you can further develop your skills with other CPIT hospitality qualifications including: Certificate in Hospitality (Youth Guarantee only) Certificate in Professional Restaurant Wine & Bar Certificate in Café Bar Service National Diploma in Hospitality management The Barista course will give you the skills and experience required to work as a professional barista in cafés and specialist coffee shops.
3 Computer Aided Design 3D (CAD) 1 Develop skills and knowledge for the computer aided design environment. MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY 2 6 Negotiable Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 22.5 hours $276 per student This course will teach you how to create drawing entities, edit entities and attributes, create 3D part models and create 2D orthographic technical drawings. The skills you ll learn in this course are relevant to many technology-related areas. After successful completion of this course you ll be eligible to apply for entry to a number of programmes including the Diploma in Computer Aided Design, architecture, engineering and related degrees. Skills in Computer Aided Design can be applied across a diverse range of business sectors and industries requiring computer-generated 3D images for information dissemination. Among its many applications, CAD is used in engineering, architecture, landscape design, packaging design, medical imaging, graphics modelling, animation and special effects for movies. 5 Conflict Management Learn how to manage interpersonal contact and gain useful skills for a wide range of careers. 4 6 Two concurrent intakes: 24 February 5 December 2014 duration: COST: 6 weeks $130 per student CPIT face to face introduction lesson delivered onsite at the school, then online. Marked, assessed and supported by a CPIT tutor On completion of this course you ll be able to identify and explain the issues of interpersonal conflict. You ll also be able to develop and implement strategies to manage interpersonal conflict and to evaluate those strategies. This course forms a unit standard in the National Certificate in Business (First Line Management), studied fully online. You may choose to undertake further study to complete this qualification. The knowledge gained in this course can be applied in any work situation and is especially relevant in business and management related fields.
6 Customer Service & Retail Develop the skills required to provide excellent customer service within a retail sales environment. Service Industries August 13 November 2014 Thursday and Friday one day in the classroom and one day in work experience with a retailer You ll become confident in a range of retail-related skills including customer service, word processing, handling complaints, communication, basic legislation and calculations for the workplace. This course incorporates unit standards that lead towards the National Certificate in Retail and the National certificate in Business Administration and Computing Level 3. Successful completion of this course will help you advance your career within the retail sector or other sales and customer service related industries. 13 weeks $756 per student and retail outlet Note: This course requires a minimum of 15 students to run.
7 Espresso Beverage Knowledge Service Gain an in-depth understanding of coffee, its history and how to make the perfect espresso beverage. Service Industries 3 6 As requested 20 hours $225 per student With this course you ll learn how to prepare and present espresso beverages. You ll also be able to demonstrate your knowledge of coffee heritage, production and culture. After completing this course there are many hospitality-related qualifications open to you that will allow you to fine tune your skills even further. These include: Certificate in Hospitality (Youth Guarantee only) Certificate in Professional Restaurant Wine & Bar Certificate in Café Bar Service National Diploma in Hospitality Management After completing this course you ll be ready to work as a barista in cafés and specialty coffee shops. Ethnic Cookery Learn how to prepare and serve a variety of cuisines from around the world. Service Industries 1 Nil As requested 3 hours $54 per student This course will teach you how to prepare and cook a selection of dishes representative of various cultures and ethnicities. After completing this course you can further your skills in the hospitality and food industry with the following CPIT qualifications: Certificate in Hospitality (Youth Guarantee only) Certificate in Cookery for the Hospitality Industry Diploma in Professional Cookery After completing this course you ll be ready to work as a café or restaurant assistant and with further studies you could work as a chef.
8 Fashion Drawing Portfolio Apply your design flair in the exciting world of fashion April 2 May 2014 Monday Friday, 9am 4pm 30 hours $250 per student (Paxus House) This course shows you how to understand and follow a fashion design brief, how to research and develop design concepts in relation to a brief, and how to present concepts pictorially with adequate technical detail. You ll learn basic skills in anatomical drawing and fabric representation using mixed media. This course is preparation for the Certificate in Fashion Technology & Design Level 4. With further study, you could work as a pattern-cutter, design assistant or fashion seamstress in a studio. Knife Skills & Vegetable Cuts Become skilled in an essential area of any commercial kitchen environment. Service Industries 1 Nil As requested 3 hours $41 per student This course will teach you essential knife skills and how to identify safety and hygiene hazards in relation to vegetable preparation. It also covers attractive presentation and hygienic storage of finished products. You can further your skills in the hospitality and food industry with the following CPIT qualifications: Certificate in Hospitality (Youth Guarantee only) Certificate in Cookery for the Hospitality Industry Diploma in Professional Cookery After completing this course you ll be ready to work as a café or restaurant assistant and with further studies you could work as a chef.
9 Introduction to Information Technology Gain an understanding of computer hardware and software, and the systems used in the ICT industry February 4 July 2014 or 21 July 28 November 2014 Friday 8.30am 3pm This programme could be delivered onsite at an individual secondary school by negotiation 70 hours $250 per student This wide-ranging course provides an excellent foundation for a career or further study in the diverse and ever-changing field of ICT. You ll learn about hardware components, operating systems, networks, types of memory and storage, input and output devices, data communications equipment and their characteristics and uses in modern applications. This course sits within the CPIT Certificate in Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Level 4 which in turn leads to the Level 6 Diploma in Information and Communications Technology (DipICT). The DipICT can then lead to the Bachelor of Information and Communication Technologies. This qualification is the ideal stepping stone for further ICT studies. It will enhance your CV and equip you for a variety of jobs which use computers.
10 Introduction to Patternmaking Gain the technical skills needed to produce patterns for fashion garments July 2014 Monday Friday, 9am 4pm 30 hours $250 per student (Paxus House) During this course you ll learn how to make patterns for clothing using drafting and measuring equipment. The course also covers basic flat pattern drafting techniques in detail, and how to apply these techniques to make pattern blocks for a variety of women s outer wear. This course is preparation for the Certificate in Fashion Technology & Design Level 4. As well as leading to further study in fashion disciplines, this course can lead to employment as a pattern cutter or fashion seamstress in a studio environment.
11 Introduction to Safety in the Workplace Learn about the essential health and safety principles that need to be followed when working in hospitality environments. Service Industries 3 2 As requested 25 hours $398 During this course you ll learn how to apply health and safety principles in a working restaurant or kitchen environment, and how to maintain a safe and secure environment for people in the hospitality industry. The course includes supervised practical application in real kitchen and restaurant environments. After completing this course, there are a variety of study options open to you within the hospitality area, including: Certificate in Hospitality (Youth Guarantee only) Certificate in Professional Restaurant Wine & Bar Certificate in Café Bar Service Career opportunities available to you include working as a café or restaurant assistant or chef.
12 Japanese Learn the language of one of the most influential countries in the world. 1 & February 7 November 2014 Fridays 9am 3pm duration: As per school terms cost: $1265 per student On this course you ll learn Japanese language skills with a focus on spoken and written communication used in common, everyday situations. Your research-based project work will explore aspects of Japanese life and culture. Throughout the year you ll develop your own portfolios of learning which will be submitted for internal assessment. Upon completion of this course you ll have a solid foundation in Japanese language that can provide a pathway into further NCEA Japanese study, or a certificate or degree in Japanese at CPIT. Japanese language skills provide opportunities for diverse careers both here and overseas - in fields such as tourism, hospitality, international business, trade and travel industries, immigration and consultancy work. NOTE: The standards offered in this course do appear on the SEL. Secondary Schools will need to find funding for this offering, excluding STAR funding, to cover the costs of this course.
13 Science Linkage Gain a broad understanding of science, with a focus on chemistry and microbiology. 4 Chemistry: 10 Microbiology: 6 Microbiology: 5 March 16 April 2014 Wednesday, 5pm 8pm Chemistry: 7 May 2 July 2014 Wednesday, 5pm 8pm duration: 15 weeks This course provides a broad overview of science in a laboratory environment. You ll learn how to work safely in a microbiological laboratory and how to use a microscope to view, interpret and measure microbiological specimens. During the chemistry focus of this course you ll learn how to calibrate and maintain equipment and how to perform a rance of analyses. This course will assist you with entry into degrees in science, applied science, health sciences and nursing. The practical experience in microbiology and chemistry provided by this course can lead to employment in laboratory environments, or further tertiary study. cost: Chemistry: $415 per student Microbiology: $331 per student
14 Preparing for Work Gain excellent communication skills in a supported learning environment. All Vocational Pathways 1 5 This supported learning course will introduce you to general workplace practices with an emphasis on communication. It will teach you how to identify factors that contribute to effective and positive working relationships, and how to provide personal information in a one-to-one situation. This is a supported learning course leading to the National Certificate in Work and Community Skills. 7 May 3 July 2014 Wednesday & Thursday, 9am 12pm 9 weeks $370 Woodturning Taster Explore the tools and techniques involved in making furniture and joinery. Non assessed As requested cost: $87 CONSTRUCTION & INFRASTRUCTURE Non assessed duration: 6 hours (one day) This one-day course in woodturning will give you a taste of the furniture and joinery profession. It includes an overview of how to use woodturning tools, safe use of a lathe and personal safety in a workshop environment. You ll also make a pencil holder to take home. This taster course can lead to Level 2 Furniture and Joinery. Successful completion of a pre trade course in furniture and joinery can lead you into an apprenticeship. 15 Workskills Health & Wellbeing for Work Learn the importance of maintaining positive health and wellbeing in the workplace. All Vocational Pathways 1 6 On successful completion of this supported learning course you ll be able to describe ways of maintaining good health, including dealing with minor illnesses, conditions and injuries. You ll also be able to identify triggers and symptoms of anger and ways to seek help. This course leads to the National Certificate in Work and Community Skills. 23 July 29 September 2014 Wednesday & Thursday, 9am 12pm 10 weeks $370 Workskills Money Skills Learn how to handle money in everyday life with this supported learning course. All Vocational Pathways 1 6 On successful completion of this course you ll be able to count, identify and use numbers from ten to 100 in everyday life. You ll also know how to keep money secure and how to use it to purchase goods. 16 Workskills Safety at Work Develop safe practices at work, home and out in the community. CONSTRUCTION & INFRASTRUCTURE MANUFACTURING & TECHNOLOGY October 18 December 2014 Wednesday & Thursday, 9am 12pm This supported learning course includes unit standards on crossing roads safely - with and without designated crossing points - and identifying potentially hazardous situations and appropriate actions to be taken.
