7 Working with Further Education OCN NI works in partnership with the 6 Further Education colleges across Northern Ireland and in recent years the majority of our learners who have achieved qualifications have done so in a further education college. Informed by the changing agenda for further education, our focus is on creating the highest quality qualifications which are accessible to all and enable the learner to thrive. OCN NI recognises the need to adapt and change in response to the challenging economic environment colleges work in. The very contours of our activities have focussed on developing cost-effective qualifications informed by funding changes and the deluge of policy initiatives which have shaped the further education sector over the past ten years. OCN NI qualifications are flexible, responsive to individuals, cumulative, progressive and success-based. They are credit-based, and offer locally-responsive curricula and quality assurance arrangements, operating within national quality frameworks. 50 Working with the Voluntary and Community Sector Northern Ireland has developed a vibrant voluntary and community sector (VCS) and the underpinning values and ethos of OCN NI owes much to our close ties with many different VCS organisations, including large established learning providers and small community based groups. OCN NI continues to work with VCS organisations to build on this experience, increasingly using accreditation to enhance the status of their work and crucially to give their learners formal recognition of achievement. Social inclusion, wider participation and community transformation remain integral to OCN NI s ethos and core values. The learners engaged through our work with VCS organisations typically fall into two main categories. Firstly, service users undertaking accredited learning activities provided by VCS organisations and secondly, VCS organisations own staff and volunteers. Together they access a varied range of learning activities and training courses whose diversity is evidence of the creativity and commitment of those involved. A key challenge for VCS organisations is demonstrating outcomes from their programme. Whether you are a learning provider, employer or community organisation, we can work with you to develop and accredit programmes where a national qualification may not be appropriate. What is Endorsed Accreditation? It is credit-based units of assessment which we develop with you and approve for your use. We work with you to write appropriate learning outcomes and assessment criteria (the unit), based on the content of your course. Each unit is given a credit value this is the time taken by learners, on average, to complete the learning outcomes of the unit. What are the benefits? They are tailor-made for your requirements They meet national standards for credit-based units of assessment They are approved and quality assured by OCN Northern Ireland a national Awarding Organisation Your learners receive a certificate for their achievements from a national Awarding Organisation. How does it work? Our Business Development Advisors work closely with providers, offering advice and support in the accreditation of local courses. Courses can be built from a vast range of readymade units or we can work with you to develop new units. Developing New Units The process for developing new local units is as follows: Contact your appointed business development advisor (BDA) to discuss your ideas Attend the OCN NI Unit Writing Workshop, which will equip you with the tools needed to develop new units With the support of your BDA write draft unit/s for your programme Your BDA will present your unit for approval to the OCN NI unit panel. This panel will make any further recommendations and approve the unit/s Your unit/s will be coded and ready for delivery within your centre 66
