If you are unemployed, you may be entitled to a course fee discount. We can help you to write a new CV and boost your confidence. It is not too late. FUN Learning isn t all exams and algebra. 4 What will it cost? Course tuition fees can be cheaper than you think. There are many different types of courses featured in this prospectus, with a range of savings depending on your circumstances. Take a look at the table below - it may look complicated at first but call us if you need any extra help, or come along to enrolment where our experts are on hand to talk you through. PART TIME AGE Are you aged 16, 17 or 18 years old on 31 August 2011? Are you at least 19 years old on 31 August 2011? No tuition fee to pay unless the course is not funded. 6 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Improving your English can help you get more out of your life in the UK. It will also help if you want to study, improve your CV, or apply to become a British citizen. IMPROVING YOUR ENGLISH If English is not your main language; you can do a course to help you improve your English. These courses are called ESOL or English for Speakers of Other Languages. Improving your English will make it easier to: Talk to doctors and teachers; Progress onto courses featured in this brochure; Help your child with homework; Access everyday life and services; Learn about living in the UK. What does an ESOL course involve? ESOL courses cover: Speaking and listening; Reading and writing; Vocabulary; Punctuation and grammar. 7 Family learning Help your children do well at school and learn together. All parents want their children to do well at school and to succeed. However, many simply don t know where to start. Everything seems to have changed since your own schooldays, and you don t want to confuse your children by using different methods to their teacher. FAMILY LEARNING CAN HELP Family learning supports parents, grandparents, carers and other family members to be an active part of their children s learning, as well as becoming learners themselves. Family learning classes are run in many venues in Kirklees. As a parent/carer, they give you the opportunity to learn together with your children, as well as a chance to share ideas with other parents and develop your own skills. WHERE CAN I STUDY? 8 Skills for Life Skills for Life qualifications are designed to help you develop the skills you use in everyday life, such as reading, writing or maths. They can also help you boost your CV or move on to further study. You can take a Skills for Life qualification if you: Are over 16 years of age; Have left compulsory full time education; Do not have an up-to-date English or maths qualification at level 2, such as a GCSE. As well as skills for life, you may have also heard people talking about basic skills. The two terms mean the same thing, and refer to the same qualifications. HOW YOU ARE ASSESSED The type of test or task you take, and how it is assessed, will depend on which level of qualification you choose. Entry levels: At the three entry levels, Skills for Life qualifications consist of tasks assessed by your learning centre, college or school. Levels 1 and 2: At levels 1 and 2, you ll take National Basic Skills tests. You can take the test on paper or on screen using a computer. The tests consist of 40 multiple choice questions. SKILLS FOR LIFE 6 WHERE THEY CAN LEAD Skills for Life qualifications are based on national standards, so everyone, including potential employers, can see what you re capable of. They can: give you more confidence in your own abilities; show what you have achieved in your learning programme; boost your CV; help you progress onto courses featured in this brochure. 10 GCSE English and maths Do you: need a qualification to apply for university or a better job? have time to study extra at home? want to improve your existing GCSE grade? want a qualification in a year? If so, then a GCSE may be for you (subject to assessment). GSCE English and maths are arguably the most important GCSE subjects, and more often than not a necessary requirement for most further and higher education courses, as well as a wide range of jobs. Open to adults, the qualifications can be taken alongside other qualifications. The course is taught by highly qualified, experienced staff who ensure that the work is varied and enjoyable.
