1 Gyro Replacement Instructions Gyro Replacement Instructions for TracVision C3/L2/L3/LF/R5 The following instructions explain how to replace the antenna gyro in a TracVision C3/L2/L3/LF/R5. 2 TracVision C3/L2/L3/LF/R5 Before servicing the antenna unit, be sure to remove the appropriate vehicle/vessel fuse to disconnect power. Ensure power is removed from both the antenna and the reciever or multiswitch connected to RF1. Replace the Gyro 1. Turn off the antenna and remove the appropriate vehicle/vessel fuse to disconnect power. Ensure power is removed from both the antenna and the receiver or multiswitch connected to RF1. 2. Remove the 8 screws securing the radome (see Figure 1). Remove the radome and set it aside in a safe place. Figure 1 Radome Screws 3. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the E-ring from one end of the connecting rod (see Figure 2). 3 Gyro Replacement Instructions 4. Remove the connecting rod by sliding it off the bracket. 5. Fully retract the elevation axis motor shaft (see Figure 3). Figure 3 Elevation Axis Motor Shaft Elevation Axis Motor Shaft Linear Actuator Main PCB Cover 6. Remove 6 pan head screws from the main PCB cover flanges. 7. Remove the main PCB cover. To get the necessary clearance, rotate the linear actuator up 90º while lifting the main PCB cover (see Figure 3). 8. Disconnect the Molex connector from J11 on the main PCB (see Figures 6 and 7). 5 Gyro Replacement Instructions 10. Use a 3 8" wrench or nut driver to remove the 4 locking nuts and flat washers securing the gyro to the reflector bracket. Remove the antenna gyro gasket. 12. Reverse this procedure to install the replacement gyro. Be sure to connect the new gyro cable to the main PCB and secure it with the cable clamp (see Step 8). Reinstall the vehicle/vessel fuse you removed in Step 1 and connect power to the antenna and receiver Rev. B 5

6 TracVision C3/L2/L3/LF/R5 Calibrate the New Gyro The new gyro now needs to be calibrated to work with your antenna. The following instructions explain how to calibrate the new gyro. The Flash Update Wizard is available for free at the KVH Dealer Portal. Login or register at If your computer does not have a DB9 serial COM port, you can use the following USB-to-RS232 adapter: IOGear part number GUC232A (visit This procedure requires a PC with Windows HyperTerminal or KVH Flash Update Wizard installed. 1. Connect one end of a PC serial data cable to the DB9 maintenance port. The location of the maintenance port differs among antenna models (see Figures 9, 10, and 11). Connect the other end of the data cable to the serial port on your PC (a 9- pin/25-pin connector adapter may be needed for some PCs). Double-click the KVH Flash Update Wizard shortcut on your computer s desktop to start the Wizard. You do not need to flash the antenna to configure the gyro; simply enter commands in the Command box in the TracVision Antenna Comms window (see Figure 12). Figure 12 Flash Wizard TracVision Antenna Comms Window If you are using HyperTerminal, open HyperTerminal and establish the following settings: Bits per second: 9600 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: None 3. Turn on the TracVision system. 4. Wait for the antenna to initialize (about 1 minute). 5. Type HALT then press Enter to put the system into Idle Mode. 6. Type DEBUGON then press Enter to enter Debug Mode Rev. B 7

8 TracVision C3/L2/L3/LF/R5 7. Type =LSTEST then press Enter to begin the limit switch test. Wait for the test to pass or fail. If the test fails, contact KVH Technical Support. If Unknown Command appears, skip to Step Type =CALGYRO then press Enter. Verify that the Antenna Gyro Azimuth scale factor is between and and the Antenna Gyro Elevation scale factor is between and If the scale factors are outside these ranges, contact KVH Technical Support. If Unknown Command appears, type =CALAZ then press Enter. Verify that the Antenna Gyro Elevation scale factor is between and Wait for Azimuth Calibration to complete, then type =CALEL then press Enter. Verify that the Antenna Gyro Elevation scale factor is between and Type ZAP then press Enter to restart the antenna. IMPORTANT! Before returning the old gyro, be sure to obtain an RMA number from KVH s Technical Support Department and write the number on the outside of the box. Shipments received without an RMA number will be returned to you at your expense. The replacement process is complete! Be sure to return the old gyro to KVH. 8
