1 Dates and Times Monday nights 7pm - 10pm January 23, April 2, 2012 Location Terra Hall - Room TBA Course Description This course is an introduction to techniques and applications of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, Adobe s powerhouse trio- the industry standard for image editing, creating and designing sophisticated graphics and professional layouts. Appropriate for those who have not yet worked in these programs, or have had limited exposure. In addition design basics will be introduced. Course Objective By the end of this course students will have a firm grasp in s of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and fundamental design concepts. Understanding of resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print set-up, photo adjustments, vector usage and handling of typography and design will also be addressed. Supplies and Materials Saving device with 1 or 2 GB of memory Pen, Pencil, Notebook or Paper for notes and sketches, numerous photos or images of artwork for projects Required Books and Tutorials Links will be given each class to review over the week. Attendance: All students are expected to attend class, arrive on time and leave when dismissed. Over two absences will adversly affect the studen t grade. Each student is responsible for reviewing the necessary materials and completing the assignments regardless of absence. Grading: Proficiency with media/technical excellence/ craft Understanding of programs

2 Professional execution in final product Design work including but not limited to composition, understanding of color and tone Individual effort leading to obvious improvement Attitude - an overall positive presence in the class Attendance Initiative - if a project is finished early take the initiative to start a new project or perfect the current project until the class is caught up. Meeting Deadlines and Following Directions A and A- indicates excellence and superior performance in all areas. Changes may occur to the original outline depending on the needs and progression of the class. Small breaks will be given intermittently throughout the class time.

3 Session 1: Review of Syllabus, rules and expectations. Slide Presentation on programs and examples. Vector vs Pixel and the role of each program. Intro to Photoshop, Photo booth and liquefy. Basic Color adjustments. Resolution and file formats. Color correction in Photoshop using adjustments. Correcting artifacts in photos using the healing brush, brush, eraser and clone tools. Project: In class correct photos provided by instructor. Homework: Read through BA0625 Building a Picture Path. Gather 10 digital photos to create your own picture path. Theme is optional. View the ed video links on photoshop. Session 2: Photoshop. Importing images from camera, web and scanner. Cropping, straightening. Resolution and file formats. Photoshop. Selections. Moving selections from one document to another. Feathering. Potato head exercise. Exercise: Picture Path. On an 11x17 document at 300DPI create a path of pictures with a transparent or textured background. One floating element (vignette) is required. Basic text is optional. Homework: Read BA0453 Perfect Color article and BA0645 Web Header. Session 3: Adding new color fill layers and the text tool. Color correct photos and apply a background color with additional texture found on mayang textures website. Project: Create a web banner/page design for an animal or nature based association s (aka zoo, shelter, gardens) annual. RGB, 72 DPI, 1024 x 768 px Homework: Complete web page design. Read BA0630 Flier Design. Read BA 0613 What Typeface Goes with That? Come in with images to create a festival flier. View the ed video links on InDesign. Session 4: Slide Show on Typography Basics. InDesign. Placing images and shapes. Packaging and Preflight. Exercise: Shape tools, type tools, move tools, free transform vs selection. What are full bleed, safe zone and trim area? Project: Create a flier on a chosen festival (aka jazz, winter, October, cherry blossom, etc). Body text may be copied and pasted from another source. Homework: Finish flier. Read through BA 0603 Many from One article. Find one image to work with in a magazine spread with the theme Three Days in Paradise. Image must be 600DPI. Session 5: InDesign. Font sites. Font book. Type tools. Body text vs Header text. Text effects. Project: Create a magazine spread using only three photos. Homework: Finish magazine spread. Prepare for quiz.

4 Session 6: Performance Quiz: Instructor will provide an article with several photos. Students will be asked to complete a layout following a specific set of instructions and specifications. Items that will be covered are color modes, resolution, placing images, adding text, packaging, color corrections, bleed and margins use and basic understanding of design. Homework: View the ed video links on s of Illustrator. Session 7: Illustrator. Slide show. Basic Shapes. Flag exercise. Project: Flag Creation. Shape tools, transforming, arranging, color usage, grouping, alignment tools Homework: Read through BA0364 Logo of Letters. Sketch out some ideas for letter based logos for your own company. View the ed video link on the pen tool. Session 8: Illustrator. Logo exercises. Pathfinder, Pen tool. Exercise on pen tool. Project: Create one full color and one black and white letter based logo in Illustrator. Homework: Read over article BA Design a Card the Easy Way Create thumbnails for three versions of a fictitious company s business card. The three versions can be different variations of the same design or 3 completely different designs. Session 9: Download start file and set up file with printer s specs. Work on business cards in program of student s choice. Business cards due at the beginning of next class. How to create one pdf. Homework: Have the following files for turn in as one pdf... 3 versions of business cards Letter logo - one black and white and one color Three Days in Paradise magazine spread Festival flier Potato Head Picture Path Web Banner/Page on Association Session 10: Written Quiz: There will be an online quiz containing 10 multiple choice questions. Complete Uarts class surveys. Project: Create a multi page pdf with all the images from the semester. Name the file as follows: If your name is John Smith you would name it...john.smith.final.csoverview.pdf Class critique of Final pdfs. Individual Q&A.

5 Project Sheet Photoshop Project : Web Header Create a web header for a fictitious company including a menu bar with links to pages contained within the site. Some company ideas that would be visually stimulating might include zoos, symphonies, gardens, garment retail, photographers studio, etc. Goals and Lessons To refresh basic Photoshop skills in Text, Layer management, Photo Placement, Opacity and Color Management. New skills introduced will include gradients, gradient layer masks and the slice tools. You will need Photographs or one photograph for background of header Research Find 5 aesthetically pleasing websites to use as inspiration and guides. Use the hand out for a starting base. Specs 1024 (Width) x144 (Height) px 72 DPI RGB color mode Save As J.Smith.Header.jpg

7 Project Sheet Photoshop & InDesign Project : Create a flyer for a festival or event EX: Octoberfest, Jazzfest, Cherry Blossom Festival, etc. Goals and Lessons Utilize Photoshop to adjust and manipulate images. Use InDesign to create an image heavy flyer focusing on one or more photos that emulate the festival s focus. You will need Sketches and visuals that may aid in the deign of the cards. For example...photos, logos or content. Research Before and After magazine pdf on flyer design. Specs 300 DPI CMYK 8.5 x11 Steps Research festivals Gather high resolution photos to use Incorporate photos with text in a clear and aesthetically pleasing manner Save As J.Smith.Flyer.jpg

Goals and Lessons Utilize InDesign s photo placement, text boxes, links palette, and vector elements to create a visually appealing two page article. You will need Three high resolution images of a destination. 11 Project Sheet Illustrator Project : Letter or Word Logo created in Illustrator Goals and Lessons Utilize Illustrator s transformation and text tools to create a logo or word that symbolizes a company or group. You will need Rough sketches of ideas. Research Before and After magazine pdf on logo design. Specs 6 x6 square OR 6 x8 rectangle vertical or horizontal Steps Research logos and vector recreations of words. Rough out ideas in illustrator or on paper. Research fonts and create outlines. Ex: (self service) John Smith s Design Service or (company) ABC Landscaping Goals and Lessons Using any or all of the three programs create a successful business card that emulates the mission of the company or person the business card is for. To create three different variations of one business or service. You will need Sketches and visuals that may aid in the deign of the cards. For example...photos, logos or content.
