4 Getting the Most Out of Smile Channel DVD Smile Channel 11 DVD is a patient education program designed for use in the reception area of the dental practice. It plays in a continuous loop throughout the day; promoting good oral health practices and helping your patients visualize the impact of esthetic dentistry. The program works as a subtle marketing tool, with more than 100 multimedia presentations that feature high-impact before-and-after images, full-motion video, and 3-D graphics that promote esthetic dentistry and present positive dental messages to your patients. Just insert the Smile Channel disc into your DVD player or computer and walk away. It s that simple. With this Smile Channel 11 DVD User Guide, you will find the information you need to get the most out of Smile Channel 11 DVD, including: Hardware requirements Playing and customizing Smile Channel Smile Channel playlist Smile Channel categories, subcategories, and presentations Viewing the DVD in Widescreen Format The DVD that comes with your annual Smile Channel Update Savings Plan displays presentations in widescreen (16:9) format. 5 Document Conventions The following conventions are used in this guide: Convention Meaning Indicates information that is necessary for preventing damage to the software or equipment. Indicates important information that you should know when using the software. Indicates a useful tip or suggestion for getting the most out of the software. Bolded Text Indicates a button, menu, command or other element that is shown on the software interface. This is also used for examples. Each topic in this guide begins with information to help you make the best choices while using the software. Step-by-step procedures for specific tasks follow the introductory information. 6 Hardware Requirements To play Smile Channel 11 DVD, you will need: A compatible interactive DVD player with remote control OR A computer with DVD-ROM drive and compatible MPEG 2 decoder. NOTE: CAESY does not provide support for issues related to combination TV/DVD units. Choosing a DVD Player While all DVD players will play movies, not all will correctly play complex, dual layer interactive discs like Smile Channel 11 DVD. Visit our Web site at Choosing DVD Software for Your Computer Most computers provide some sort of software for DVD playback. However, not all will properly play complex, dual layer interactive discs like Smile Channel 11 DVD. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 3

7 Using Smile Channel 11 DVD Smile Channel plays automatically in a continuous loop of presentations. However, each time you start Smile Channel, you can control a variety of settings to make the program fit the needs of the practice. You can launch a single presentation, set the loop to play only certain categories of presentation and set audio and subtitle preferences. This chapter shows you how to: Start Smile Channel on a computer or DVD player Operate the DVD Play Smile Channel Customize the audio and subtitle options Customize the playlist CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 4

8 Starting Smile Channel DVD Smile Channel plays automatically in a continuous loop on a computer or a DVD player. Starting Smile Channel on a Computer To start Smile Channel DVD on a computer 1. Place the Smile Channel 11 DVD disc, logo side up into the DVD-ROM drive and close the tray. 2. If the program does not begin to play automatically, follow the instructions for the DVD playback software program. Starting Smile Channel on a DVD Player To start Smile Channel DVD on a DVD player 1. Turn on the television. 2. Select the input so you can view the pictures from the DVD player. This step depends on how your DVD player is connected to the television. 3. Press Power on the player or remote to turn on the DVD player. 4. Open the player door by pressing the Open/Close button. 5. Place the Smile Channel 11 DVD disc, logo side up, into the DVD player. 6. Press Open/Close to close the tray door and begin playback. 10 Playing Smile Channel DVD Opening the Main Menu You must open the main menu to perform many of the procedures described in this guide. Opening the Smile Channel DVD: Select Menu or Root Menu on your DVD remote or computer control. You can select main menu if you are already in another Smile Channel DVD menu. Select play to begin playing the presentations from the beginning. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 7

11 Playing a Specific Presentation Smile Channel plays in a continuous loop, but you can temporarily interrupt the loop to play a specific presentation at any time. To play a specific presentation 1. Open the direct access menu in one of two ways: Open the main menu and select direct access. See Opening the Main Menu for details. Select the Title Menu or Top Menu on your computer control or DVD remote. 2. On the direct access menu, select a presentation category. 3. Review the playlist of presentations in the category menu, and select a presentation. Some menus have subcategories. To view presentations in these categories, select a subcategory tab at the top of the screen. After you make your selection, the presentation begins to play. When the presentation ends, the Smile Channel DVD loop continues to play the programmed playlist from that point forward. If you want to return to the previous presentation and continue the playlist from that point forward, select it through the direct access menu. Using the direct access menu: To have a specific presentation play immediately, select a category, and then, select the presentation. If you want to return to the previous presentation and continue the playlist from that point forward, select it through the direct access menu. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 8

12 Turning Off the Smile Channel DVD You can turn off the Smile Channel loop at any time. When you turn off the Smile Channel, any customized settings are lost. For more information, see the Creating a Customized Playlist section. To turn off the Smile Channel DVD On a DVD player or its remote control, press the Stop button. On a computer with PowerDVD, click Stop on the control panel. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 9

13 Customizing the Audio and Subtitle Settings You can turn on or turn off the audio and subtitle settings for the Smile Channel DVD by using the settings option on the main menu. Setting Audio Options Smile Channel is preset to play with English language narration. You can change the audio language feature. Because the DVD format has no memory, customized settings are not saved when you press Stop, eject the DVD or turn off the DVD player. To reprogram, simply follow these steps again the next time you start Smile Channel DVD. To change audio settings 1. Begin playing the Smile Channel DVD, or open the main menu if the DVD is playing already. See Opening the Main Menu for details. 2. On the main menu, select settings. 3. 14 Setting Subtitle Options Subtitles are disabled by default in Smile Channel 11 DVD, but you can change this setting at any time. To change subtitle settings 1. Begin playing the Smile Channel DVD, or open the main menu if the DVD is playing already. See Opening the Main Menu for details. 2. On the main menu, select settings. 3. In the subtitles section, select on or off to enable or disable the subtitles. If you are playing Smile Channel DVD from a computer, you can right click on the screen and choose the desired language or subtitle option from the pop-up menu. Subtitles settings: A checkmark displays next to the selected option. By default, subtitles are off. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 11

15 Customizing the Playlist Category Options You can select the categories of presentations you want to play in the Smile Channel DVD loop. You can play one, several or all categories. Category Esthetic General Children Technology Description Presentations about esthetic dentistry, such as Before/After images, helpful Did You Know? information, Hayley talk show programs and Smile presentations that promote esthetic services. Presentations about general dental health and information, such as the Dentline news briefs, Did You Know?, a Hayley talk show program, Health Watch and Science in Dentistry series. Presentations geared toward educating children about basic dental care, entertaining them and helping them to relax. These presentations include the dogs Buddy and Andy, Wally the seal, Kirby the chimpanzee and the Talk Out Loud series for tweens and teens. Presentations that explain dental technology, such as air abrasion, CEREC CAD/CAM, DIAGNOdent, digital radiography, intraoral cameras, lasers, minimally invasive dentistry and power whitening. Enabled by default? Yes Yes No No For a complete list of all Smile Channel presentations, see the Playlist section. In addition, some categories provide an options menu on the main menu so that you can include or exclude certain presentations while keeping the overall category active. This allows you to customize the Smile Channel DVD to fit the needs of your practice. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 12

16 You can still play an individual presentation that is in a disabled category by using the direct access menu. (For more information, refer to Playing a Specific Presentation on page 9.) However, it will not play again in the DVD loop unless you specifically select it again. Guidelines for Creating a Customized Playlist Here are some guidelines when choosing presentations for your customized playlist: How many categories can be in my customized playlist? You can select any or all categories. At least one category should be selected for your playlist. (If you disable all categories, the channel IDs and commercials for the Smile Channel DVD will still play.) How do I put an entire category into my customized playlist? Simply select the category at the main menu. A checkmark next to the category indicates that it will be included in your playlist. If there is no checkmark next to the category, none of the presentations in the category will play. How do I put individual presentations from a category into my customized playlist? Select options for the desired category, and then, select the individual subcategories and presentations as applicable. Be aware that if you remove a category from the playlist (no checkmark displays), you cannot select options for presentations within the category. If you want only specific, individual presentations within a category to appear in your playlist, you must first select the category (checkmark displays). How do I find the options menu? The options menu (to select individual presentations) displays on the main menu for the general, children, and technology categories only. You cannot select individual presentation options in the esthetic category. How do I select options for the esthetic category? The esthetic category is an all or none option. By default, all esthetic presentations will be included in the playlist (checkmark displays). If you do not want any esthetic presentations to play, clear the category s checkbox so that a checkmark does not display. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 13

17 Creating a Customized Playlist To choose presentations for your customized playlist: 1. Begin playing Smile Channel DVD, or open the main menu if the DVD is playing already. See Opening the Main Menu for details. 2. On the main menu, select at least one category so that a checkmark displays. (To disable a selected category, select it again so that a checkmark does not display.) Selecting categories: On the main menu, you can select one or more categories for your customized playlist. 3. To include or exclude certain presentations for a selected category in the playlist, select the corresponding options. 4. On the options menu, select a presentation to include it in the playlist (checkmark displays) or to exclude it (no checkmark displays). Repeat as needed. Selecting presentations: Within the category s options, you can select presentations for your customized playlist. 5. When finished choosing presentation options in each category, select main menu. 6. When you have finished choosing categories and presentations, select play to begin. CAESY Enterprise Suite 11 14

18 Playlist This is the playlist order when all categories and presentations are enabled. For your convenience, each presentation in the playlist is identified by category.
